I think this came out in paperback about 10 years ago and was written by a popular romance author. Romance with slightly Gothic Flavor set in England in 1800s or earlier, it begins with a man swimming out to sea to commit suicide finding a bottle with a message in it. He opens it and reads a message from a young girl who is in a boarding school, miserable, hopeless and friendless. Her message gives him a new purpose to live and he bcomes her unknown benefactor and confidant through letters. She wants to become a singer and is wonderfully talented. He uses a pen name, not sharing his real identity, and they tell each other everything. Does this ring any bells? I'd love to read it again!

Similar storyline but older book; Daddy LongLegs by Jean Webster. Girl's name is Jerusha, called Judy. I think her career was to be author not singer. Probably not the one you are after but you may enjoy reading it while searching for the one you've read before.
I loved that book and the movie with Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron! That was a case of seeing the movie, then having to read the book... Yes, there are similarities between the books. In the movie, he was at a school or orphanage and heard Judy singing to some children, and decided to be her anonymous benefactor... He sent her to college and she wrote to him faithfully, even though he didn't write back.
I've read this book. I loved it too. They meet in real life and don't realize who the other is until it's almost too late. (view spoiler) I think it had Moon in the title. I'll think on this and see if I can find the title.
Found it quicker than I thought I would.
