Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I have just discovered a great feature of Goodreads in the EXPLORE area. The feature is called "Book Talk" and can be found at the book tab on the right, after you click on "Explore".

Below is a direct link to the "Book Talk" page:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic

As an example, while browsing "Book Talk", I found the following discussion question about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium, #1):
See the discussion at: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/4...
The question being discussed is:
"Anyone finding it hard to get through?"

If you find an interesting discussion in the "Book Talk" section, you might post the link here.

Arnie Harris | 185 comments Irecall a reviewer bcommenting on Larrsen" He may be the worst writer I've ever encounted---and bear in mind I've read most of John Grisham's books."

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nevertheless, his books are selling!

message 4: by Arnie (new)

Arnie Harris | 185 comments Reminds me of the story of the author talking to his friend:

"Joe, I've been writing now for 20 years and finally realize I have no talent!"

Friend: "Why don't you quit?"

Author: "I can't. I'm too popular!!"

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments LOL - That's a good one, Arnie. It's amazing how many bad writers are on the bestseller lists.

Nina | 6069 comments The thing that makes Goodreads fun for me is the diversity of opinions. I could hardly put down the Larrson trilogy and others didn't like it at all. Did you know "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest," was the most purcased book in the world on New Year's Day. Oh well, maybe not many people were up to buying a book that day. nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I think that bestsellers become bestsellers because popularity feeds on itself. Readers want to jump on the bandwagon.

message 8: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I think that could be true but if you had read, "The Girl who Played with Fire," the book before the Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest," it really left you hanging so you had to read the final one. In this case I believe people bought the book because they had to know the ending. I could be wrong, of course. nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, yes, that sounds reasonable. I didn't know that the second book left you hanging and left the reader curious enough to buy the third book. Quite a marketing trick.

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, As long as you saw the movie,"The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo," and the fact that the book is a mystery and you already know the ending it would probably be a waste of time to read it. Unlike Gone With the Wind, although I saw the movie I am enjoying all the details that didn't go into it. I really thought the book, GWTDT, was far better than the movie but as I said if you already know the ending it would be a let down. nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Nina, I understand that knowing the ending takes away the suspense. However I am still curious as to how Larsson tells the story. Also, now that I know the ending I will be more relaxed. I don't like feeling tense.

message 12: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments If you do read it and decide to read the other books, I suggest you don't see the movies first. What I think this author does well, is his characterization. yes, sometimes he is too much into details. nina

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments OK, Nina, I'll take your advice. Thanks.

Arnie Harris | 185 comments As someone said "Hollywood considers a great novel a "rough draft"!

That's OK, Arnie. Hollywood has brought me a lot of pleasure. I know books are better but films are more accessible. Movies are a compromise. Less quality, more stories. :)
