Questions? Or need help understanding a task? Ask away :)

message 2: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Ok I have a question about task 12. That is the one where you have to read a book where the title cooresponds with your initials. My initials are B M. So I have to read a book called called for example Blue Moon. But can it also be A Blue Moon or The Blue Moon. Normally we don't count those words in titles but do we do that now?

message 3: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Correct. The or A etc you can ignore :)

message 4: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
So The Bounty Mutiny by William Bligh would be an option for me?

message 5: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
I'd say so :)

message 6: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Yeah, I got a book for another task. I got 6 or 7 tasks already covered. I'm on a roll. I wish we had started already so I could start reading them.

Not long now :)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Ok here are my questions. Can anyone please just clear some things up for me? :)

* Read an entire series consisting of 6 or more books. Re-reads not allowed!

So just to clarify, you need to start and finish the series completely to count? Not just go until book 6 right?

* 28. The terrible threes: Read three trilogies. (Not ones you've already started.)

Does this mean we can't read ones we have read before? Even if we start completely from the beginning?

message 9: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments With the trilogies, I meant you need to start at Book 1 and read all three, not only finishing up a trilogy you've already started reading earlier.
Maybe you can delete the "Not ones you've already started" and replace it with "Re-reads allowed, but you must start from book 1."

message 10: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Kk cool thanks :)

I'll make that change

17. Read a book that at least three of your friends have given less than three stars to.

Ok so who counts as friends? :P
People who i'm friends with on goodreads?
In the group?
In real life?

message 12: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I took this to mean Goodreads friends (whether in the group or not) as you can view all your friends ratings for a particular book.

message 13: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
What do we do if you can't find a book that three of your friends have given less than three stars to?

message 14: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Perhaps we can use the friend nominations thread to ask for your list of 1 and 2 star books? And then look for books that crop up 3 times or more.

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Number 40 - does it have to be exactly 10 letters, or can it be more too?

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith 38. b) - Then read 3 novels published before the death of its author. (That author's last novel).

Can this be the last published novel by a living author, or is it dead authors only?

Deceased authors only.

In task 40 this time the, a and an at the beginning do count, right?

message 22: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Isn't it supposed to be a one-word title? So there can't be an 'a' 'an' or 'the'.

message 23: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Your absolutely right, my mistake.
There are so many tasks to look for books that I got several mixed up.

Lu wrote: "* Read an entire series consisting of 6 or more books. Re-reads not allowed!

That's correct. You have to finish the whole series, or if it's an ongoing series, up to where it has been published.

So for example, mine would be Saga of Seven Suns. I'd have to read all 7 novels in the series.

Question?
Can novels used in one task count for another. IE - can a title for a book used in the trilogies task also be used for the 10 letter title task?

message 25: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
There has been a discussion about that in the nominations thread and the general consensus was that it should be one book one task.

But I have a question for you on the series consisting of 6 or more books. Say you finish this task and before you finish the challenge another book in this series is published. Do you have to read that book or not?

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I got two more questions.
About task 24 the book with the original authors signature in the front. That means it has to be signed by the author, right? Having a bit of a language barrier problem here. Sorry!

Then about task 10 read a book where a main character has the same name as your mother. My mum's name is Wikje or Wik as she is normally called. That is a Frisian name and isn't even popular here in the Netherlands so I haven't been able to find even a dutch book with her name in it let alone a main character. Can I also look for books that uses her second name Geertruida or derivations of that name since it isn't that popular either?

Since you are a fast reader... yes! ;)

Seriously though, I think it could be viewed as optional. If the book hasn't been published by April 1st 2011 then it shouldn't be a requirement.

message 28: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
LOL. I wouldn't mind reading it since I would probably read it anyway, but I was just thinking what we would do if a book got published during the challenge. That's why I asked.

Lauren Smith Barbara wrote: "I got two more questions.

I was also a bit confused by this (don't worry Barbara, it's not you language barrier here!) but I also took it to mean a signed copy and not, for example, a book where the authos's signature is part of the cover design.

When we encountered the problem of unusual names in past challenges, the solution was to find a similar name that was more popular. Does your mom's name have any English equivalents? Otherwise if you find something for her second name that should be fine.

message 30: by Liezel (new)

Liezel (liezkl) | 736 comments For #14 A title with 3 or more words, each starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet.

Does 'of' & 'the' count. E.g., can I use the Deep End of Fear

message 31: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
I would say so :)

message 32: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith That one is really, really hard; I couldn't find a single book to use. What do you say to expanding the task to use other word games eg. you can also use a title that's a palindrome, a title that doesn't use the same letter twice etc.

Or perhaps we could change it to say that all the words have to be in alphabetical order, but not necessarily consecutive order.

message 33: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments I was feeling particularly evil when coming up with that one. Please feel free to change it. :P

message 34: by Crusader (new)

Crusader (crusaderza) | 2457 comments Mod
Can't we change the 1500 page requirement to 1000 pages. That should add lots of titles as options.

The thickest War and Peace I found had only 1200 pages including commentary.

Also for #35 would titles by Iain M Banks also count or is it only for his non sci-fi stuff?

message 35: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm also in favour of 1000 pages - it's hard enough.

I'd say you could use Iain M. Banks.

message 36: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Haha, it would seem most tasks I chose is too much. It's Lu's fault though! Her description said: "a challenge that will only fit a few books, or where you have to do some serious googling to find something to read."

Yes. please go ahead and change it to 1000 pages.

message 37: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
Lol sorry I made such a diabolical description :)

Agreed on the 1000 pages!

What do you guys want to do with:
A title with 3 or more words, each starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet?

message 38: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
*Notice*

The 1500 page challenge is now a 1000+ pages

Hahah no I'm sure we can tweak it :)

Any ideas?

message 41: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I made a few suggestions is post 32, how about one of those? The second one is the simplest.

message 42: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
The palindrome? I'm in :)

message 43: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith No, the one with non-consecutive letters. But the palindrome things is more fun :)

That clears up a lot! I just thought I couldnt reread any of the trilogies that I've read before

Hey Barbara - Geertruida is a popular old school Afrikaans name, so you might get an Afrikaans book, or you could use Gerty, which is a shortend version of the name
