I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this, (someone please tell me if it's not) but, I was just wondering, how does everyone choose the book they're going to read next? Do any of you have a certain method, do you choose by author, title, etc? I'm asking because I just noticed I have over 1000 books on my to-read list, and I figured it would be interesting to see how people choose what they want to read.

Those are good suggestions, I didn't know that you could sort your list randomly so i'll have to try that.
I know that I do a lot of challenges so I choose my books based on what I have on my challenges that I do. I think that it makes it more challenging and gives me more variety. I always try to read books on my TBR list within my challenges first of course and if none of them fit then I will try to find something that would strike my fancy within that challenge.
I have over 2,000 books- real and ebook, in my TBR pile. I agree with Meghan about the challenges. Sometimes the only way I actually read books that have worked their way to the bottom of the stack is if the books is needed for a challenge. Here's a GR challenge group if that's something that appeals to you. http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/3...

most of my book choices are those that fit into challenges as well...as couple of other groups:http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/1...
http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/2... - this one is one of my fav's because it really makes me push my reading boundaries because I always try to finish it in the 3 month time period
I just read what I am in the mood for or sounds more interesting at the time. This is coming from me, one of those people who has TOO MUCH on their TBR shelf, lol!
I don't have a method. I usually have around 5-10 books going at a time. I don't like specific challenges or reading groups because I might not be in the mood for that book at that time.
This is a really interesting question. I don't think I've ever thought of a particular way to select my next book. I tend to go on what I feel like reading when it comes time to pick a new one. I like to change things up between books, because I read books from all different genres. Sometimes I'll have a certain book picked to read for a challenge or group read but that's about it. The rest I just pick at random. It normally takes me a while to finally make the choice, going through my bookshelf over and over again before finally grabbing a book to read. Maybe having some find of method would make the decision process faster though.
I have the least scientific approach... I decide whether I"m in a fiction or nonfiction mood, then I pick something at random off my bookshelf (as I discovered recently that 1/3 of my book collection is unread, giving me 200 to-read books at my disposal...

I have a pretty random approach too, I just go to my to read list, sort by a random method whether date or author and go through until I find a catchy title
I usually stick to an author and try to read everything I can find by them, then I go to the next. Right now I'm on James Patterson :) If you look at my "read" list you can pretty much see my author kicks, with some random books in between :D
Well I have a stack and this time I ordred the books in groups for this challenge I am in. I have 5 point group, 10 point group, 15 point group, and 25 group. This changes each quarter.
That's neat. I really just read whatever I'm in the mood for. Lately, however, it's something I need to read for a book tour or for an author. And whatever I have checked out from the library or borrowed from a friend.
I am with Jencey. I have been reading books that I have fit into one challenge and usually hope they fit into others. I usually go for the higher points first then work my way down. Unless one of the books requires you get something from a library. Then I work on those. (I should mention that I have hundreds of books on my Nook that are unread and about another hundred dt books at my disposal.) I am usually able to fit in most of my books into the challenge and then whatever I don't have I don't worry about. However I still find a book that fits just because it is fun to do book hunts.
Do you all do other challenges than the ones for this group? If so how many others do you try to do?
I do the pages challenge, but I mainly do the Red Dress Ink group challenge. This is a big challenge with lots of points.
Uhm, I do this one, Task Completion (one of my group), My Big Fat Booky Challenge-athon, SOS: Serious Overload of Series, Monthly Challenges (Meghan's group), Dementia Reading Challenges, Cover to Cover Challenge, and The Lost Challenges. So that's...8 different challenge groups. There's at least one challenge in all of these groups that I try to do each month, or over a certain period of time.
I do this one, Seasonal Reading Challenge, Monthly Challenges, Task Completion, and Cover to Cover Challenge. I think they help me focus yet broaden my reading.
I agree. I'm probably going to cut back some next yr, but they definitely help you get out of your normal reading range a little more.
ARC copies and challenges are the best way for me to choose. Sometimes it is the next in a series that I just can't wait to read. Or if someone or several tell me that a book is a must read.
Plus I'm a eclectic reader. If I've had too many YA in a row I pick up something else because after awhile I get sick of one genre. I like to break things up.
I love travel books or books that take me to a place I've never been... or if it brings me back to where I have already walked.
