Kerri (kerri210) | 6 comments My boyfriend has the same book addiction that I have. There is no need to be sneaky! :)

Mirvan. Ereon (mirvanereon) | 12 comments I hide my purchases from my mother. I always get international packages because i love buying books online. I lie to my mother that I get them for free from authors who want my reviews. It is partially true since I get books to review from authors and also some authors would just give them to me as gifts. But sometimes, I would order books online since all my money is in Paypal.

Kerri (kerri210) | 6 comments Batsup....that's hilarious! If I worked in a bookstore used or otherwise I would spend most of my check! :)

Yes 23 years old and I have been working since I was 16. I have a full time job and pay my board and my bills are always paid but they get mad because I don't save. I am saving now though because I want my own place even if it is only a studio flat.

I guess I can understand them wanting you to save but does seem rather extreme when you're in your 20's and have a job. Good luck with the saving though, I think I was around your age when my brother and I left home and bought a house together. Scary but the best thing we did as we get on much better with our parents now we're not sharing a house too small for all of us!

Sydney In elementary and middle school we had 2 book fairs every year. I would save my money and buy as many as possible, despite my mom telling me not to. I would hide them in my backpack or I would take my jacket off and carry it (with my books under it). When I would get home I hid them in my dresser drawers or under my bed or behind my bookshelves. I don't think I ever got caught.

Lára | 175 comments Oh yes! People in my family were/are always against me buying books. "It´s not worth the money" is their favourite sentence, among "I would have never bought it". So I sneak in most of my book purchases
They never notice, my room is full of books, anyway (;

I buy about 50 books per year, officially. and no less than 100 that I "hide"

Rachel Hogan | 8 comments oh yeah i hide them away or just "forget to metion i bought something" i do that with more than just boooks...

message 111: by K (new)

K | 286 comments I used to hide my purchases from my parents, because they always used to tell me that I should be saving my money. Fair play to them, I pretty much spent everything I recieved, often leaving myself broke and penniless, so I can understand what they were saying. I'm a bit better these days, so I don't have to hide it from my husband. He doesn't mind if it is only some of my weekly allowance that I am using to fuel my addiction.

message 112: by Garima (new)

Garima Jain | 4 comments I buy expensive books to celebrate my success. Cannot decipher and explain the reason behind this feeling. Books are like Champagne bottles to me!
But because I loathe reading course books, my parents admonish me for buying new chunk of stories every other week. :D
Therefore, I got to hide them.

message 113: by Garima (new)

Garima Jain | 4 comments This is a little off-beat, but I find these forums really helpful for myself as the questions allow me to define those vague inner feelings. I put them into words here. Cannot be more honest than this. Not even in my daily journal.

message 114: by Laura (new)

Laura | 55 comments Yes, somewhat. Only because of all the sighs and such I get from my husband when I reveal that I have bought yet another book.

message 115: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 58 comments all the time!!! I have to secret my books into my room when my parents are not around! :)

message 116: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Farrow Yes, all the time and I hid most of them.

Sameerah El-amin | 3 comments Pretty muchos every tome I buy some because I haven't read all from the last time I bought some.

message 118: by Taylor (new)

Taylor Hahaha! I saw the title of this thread and knew this was the group for me! We have such a little house and there is no room for any more books, so I do quietly bring them into the house and hope my husband doesn't notice.

So if he ever asks you just go: "Oh that... it's been there for years..." ;-)

Paulfozz I've tended to be reluctant to tell my brother that I've been out on the train yet again to go to the bookshop that's closing, but I do know I have been there rather a lot recently. He's got more than a little bored with me telling him about the books I've bought there, though a few times he has conceded that I have found some amazing books there for very good prices. I guess it does make me a little guilty but not much - I'd rather spend the money I have on books than on boozy nights on the town!

I live on my own and live within my means so I don't really have to justify my spending to anyone but myself. Fortunately I have 'some' control and have kept my house from looking like a public library, though the collection is growing! With that shop now closed my temptation will be lessened (half price interesting books were too much to resist!) so I probably won't be coming home with huge bagfuls of books any more… not often anyway!

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

My husband surprised me by joining in on the fun at the friends of library sale. He usually doesn't read but managed to leave with a bag full himself.

message 122: by Jools (new)

Jools (jools4853) Fortunately my husband is just like me !!! We go on a weekend trip, stay in a nice hotel, first thing we do is hit local bookstores, get tons of books then back to the hotel room and spread the books all out on the bed to savor them, and decide what to read first. Heaven!

message 123: by Jools (new)

Jools (jools4853) We have a small home but many many books. We have a handyman we call on to remodel now and then. He has added built in bookshelves in every room. For the last set of bookshelves he almost refused. He said, "do you people read all these books??" of course I answered "yes"... and he replied, "then why the he** do you keep them?".
This guy is NOT a reader.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) I purposely don't mention recent purchases....but if he asks, I tell the truth. :/ I can always defend myself by saying I only buy hugely discounted books, though, which seems to work! He understands I have an addiction. :)
