Does anyone have any costume suggestions for characters from books?

Yes, authors can suggest characters from their own books, preferably with detailed descriptions.

It would help to know who or what was going to wear the costume, and if it was a stage or hall costume. Budget might also make a difference.
Before I was an author, I was a costumer. You must first consider the natural atributes of the person who will be wearing the costume. Second, where and for what purpose. A costume for the Parade has far different parameters than a costume for the stage.

Well, I had actually hoped to generate some general discussion, not just discuss a costume for me.

I'm not a costumer and wouldn't compete at all. I mostly just wear geeky T-shirts with jeans and comfortable shoes. There are a couple of pictures of me at DC last year in my profile, but you may need to be my friend to see them.

I've never been to Dragon Con, but I understand it's a more... mature Con than average, especially in regards to costumes.
