Self-promotion is a very tricky part of participating in groups in Good Reads. These rules are intended to keep the focus on the fact that Good Reads is primarily a place for readers, but is also a forum for readers to interact with authors. Authors may happily find new readers, but should not abuse this forum as a marketing opportunity.

We like authors and translators to join our group because we believe the interaction between readers and writers is mutually beneficial.

However, please refrain from pushing your book(s) in the threads. Authors and translators are free to self-promote their books in the Let Us Get to Know Each Other Thread but should refrain from self-promoting books under other topics unless it's clearly relevant to the discussion at hand. The same goes for linking to your personal websites and blogs. Please see the Goodreads author guidelines for guidance and/or speak to any moderator for advice on whether to post something or where to best post it.

We will delete self-promotional posts that we deem inappropriate or irrelevant to the discussion thread, that are posted in inappropriate threads, or are duplicate posts.

It has come to my attention that we have a number of authors in our group. I don't want anyone to think, based on the above or on a miscommunication I had with another member, that there is an absolute gag rule on authors discussing their books and work here at this group. When it's appropriate to a discussion, it's fine to mention your book in the discussion threads, just avoid expressing things in a promotional way.

Also, at another group that I moderate, we have dedicated threads for authors where they are free to discuss their books and work to their heart's content and interact with readers. I'd like to do the same here. Authors, please let me know if you are interested in having a thread! Thanks!!

I've opened this thread for comments if anyone has questions about these rules/guidelines.

Ashley, I would like to hear about what you're reading and so would like to add you as a friend. I looked up that title and didn't find anything else on it. Is the title correct?

Ruby Emam (goodreadscomruby_emam) Hi, Ashley. Which area of the Middle East are you more interested in?

Charles William Sutherland (charleswsutherland) | 31 comments Hi, Ashley. I'm new as well. I am very interested in the Middle East, largely because of the history of religion which has caused so many wars. I have written several books about it. One current one is 'Prisoners of History: The Story of Dalia, a Palestinian" which will give you some, brief general history of the Phoenicians (now called Palestinians) and the Hebrew origins. It is also a modern-day 'non-fiction novel' which will provide current information... much of it disturbing.

I read a great deal, and have since I was educated by the Jesuits in high school to read constantly, but to read "one book a month (10 pages a day) in which you have no interest... in order to expand your imagination and knowledge.' I would urge you, and others, to adopt that simple practice.

Many books are too verbose, and too detailed only for the purpose of expanding their length. Thus, I have learned to distill information.

Good luck.

Amira Awaad | 2 comments Hi everyone! I'm Amira from Egypt.

Initially, I was born in Chad and raised all over the world, but I came home when I was 18 and have been here since.

By way of books, I'm an avid (voracious!) reader and a writer as well :)

See you guys around!
Amira
