Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Selva , doesn't Chennai also have the Eloor Library? I remember my brother singing praises of it.

message 22155: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Leena, they closed Eloor library few years back. They sold their books on discount and I had been there n bought a couple of books from their collection. That was a lending library and in terms of size, no way comparable to Anna Library. Anna Library is 7 or 8 floors tall and each floor is quite big. Each floor is dedicated to a particular type of books. It caters to research students, UPSC aspirants, readers like me who want to read novels n other books. Almost a floor for Tamil literature. The building is styled like an IT company. One can sit by the glass windows, watch the traffic n read.

TTPBM: Pet peeve?

message 22157: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments My recent one is a lot of stuff we or rather I had some expertise on is being taken by AI.

TTPBM same

message 22158: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments I totally agree with the pet peeve you've mentioned. I absolutely hate AI or chat gpt. How darebtyebtake aways jobs without figuring out how to help people put food on their tables.

TTPBM : SAME

message 22159: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments @Selva: I'm sorry to hear about the Eloor library. Bombay has only one such library like Anna Library: the Aisatic Society. But it's got the really old books. and it's on one end of Mumbai.

message 22160: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Leena, Anna library is well stocked. They have new, old n most everything. I don't know abt the books that came out in the last 2-3 years. Even my place is far off from the library. It takes 2 hrs to reach there if I include all the time. But chennai trains are not that crowded like in Mumbai and so the to and fro journey is got that strenuous.

TTPBM your pet peeve?

message 22161: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments *not that strenuous

message 22162: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments My pet peeve is that people refuse to read particular books just because their friend didn't like it or the reviews were bad. Why do you care about them? Everyone won't like the same books.

TTPBM : Read any books published in 2023?

message 22163: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments I do read a lot of reviews before buying a book.

Books published in 2023? None.

message 22165: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments @ Austin: The reviews give me an idea as to how polarised the views on books could be. It's nice sometimes to be equipped with that kinda knowledge and to compare it with what I feel whilst reading the book. And most books have that kind of vast expanse. The other reason I read reviews is when it's a highly recommended book, esp on GR, and I'm literally struggling with it. I then scour the reviews to check whether there have been any other strugglers.

Books published in 2023 that I've read
1. Josh and Gemma Second Time Around.
2. Unladylike Lessons
3. As You Walk On By

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments TTPBM : any book by an Indian writer that has angered you with their description of India

message 22167: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments The description of rural India in The white tiger wasn't that pretty. But it didn't anger me bcoz most likely the author was writing the truth. I can't think of anything else.

Do you like art movies or Commercial Cinema?

message 22169: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Movies that are in-between neither too artsy nor too commercial. I do enjoy the art stuff and totally commercial movies (like Telugu cinema )if made well.

TTPBM, opinions on "self-help" literature?

message 22171: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Think the good ones are helpful especially if you try to follow them at an early stage in your career.

TTPBM same

message 22172: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments I've never read self-help books because I'm always doubtful on the efficacy of it. Having said that, I do know some of my cousins who swear by the classics like Dale Carnegie.

TTPBM: toyrbthoughts on self.mefication and efficacy of home remedies

message 22173: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments If I get small scratches/burns, I just apply some coconut oil and turmeric. Most of the time that is fine. And for mild dever, I pop a paracetamol and use gelusil for mild acidity. Ofc, volini for stiff muscles n something like Amritanjan for headaches. That sums up my home remedy thing. Anything more complex, I visit a doctor.

TTPBM same

message 22174: by Anulekha (new)

Anulekha (anumuses) | 206 comments For me, serious diseases like dengue and chicken pox got cured by home remedies. So I always supplement allopathy with home remedies.
I take self-medication only for minor things.

TTPBM: Which is preferable, govt job or private job?

message 22175: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Anything where the work is interesting and there is good work-life balance. Besides, the range is wide: an IAS officer does a govt job, so is a bank employee. You can keep a similar argument for private jobs too.

TTPBM same

message 22176: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments it really depends on what field you're going in, and what you ultimately want out of that position. there isn't set preferability for everyone, and you must see which fits you according to your needs.

ttpbm, what are books that you think everyone must read, at least once?

message 22177: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments I have my fav books. But saying everyone should read them would be too much. Practically, every adult should read books on money management once they start making some money. Younger people should read anything that comes their way that is appropriate for their age.

message 22178: by Preethi (new)

TTPBM - How much time do you spend of social media?

message 22180: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments About 2 to 5 hrs. I spend most of my time on Goodreads and Fb messenger. Some time is spent as well on WhatsApp, FB and Instagram.

Austin George | 4069 comments TTPBM

Name any book(s) that you were eagerly looking forward to read but turned out to be a massive disappointment.

message 22182: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments One book is 'Snow' by Organ Pamuk. I bought it with a lot of expectation from a store based on glowing reviews on the back cover. This was before Goodreads n other social media. Even before Amazon. Tried twice or thrice but never was able to complete. On checking Goodreads, I came to know that several ppl had the same issue. I don't know if it is the fault of the book or if I might be able to enjoy it now, I had a similar experience with 'one hundred years of solitude'.

message 22183: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments One Hundred Years of Solitude for me. I don't think I'll never stop badmouthing it lol. (same pinch)

TTPBM, how has your reading fared this year, compared to the previous one?

message 22184: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments It is bad. Have read like 5/25 books n the going is not good. Last year was decent.

TTPBM same

message 22185: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments I have read 23 books this year. Last year was better quality-wise compared to this year so far.

TTPBM : Your favourite month of the year?

message 22186: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Used to be say December bcoz u get the Christmas holidays + New year. Now except for the fact that Chennai is cooler relatively in December, it doesn't matter to me.

TTPBM same

message 22187: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments For me, December too. I like it most as it's Christmas time. It's also when I get my 2 weeks off from work in the name of Christmas and New Year. Other times of the year, I won't get more than a few days leave.

TTPBM - Have you read any books published in 2023?

message 22188: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments No. None.

TTPBM same. (If so tell me the really good ones)

message 22189: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments I read only one, Victory City by Salman Rushdie. I must have read about 40-50 pages before I DNF'd it. I don't like Rushdie's writing style. I found the story and writing wacky and unconventional. Not my cup of juice. Time is limited and I would rather spend it on 4 and 5 star books. 3 star, if the book is short.

TTPBM : Do you use Google or Bing more?

message 22190: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Yet to read a Rushdie fully. Have read a few pages of a couple of his novels and yeah, the writing style is different n not easy. But his Midnight's children is in the bucket list.

Mostly Google mainly bcoz it is used by vast majority of ppl and as a result the autofill capability is better than that of Bing. Sometimes, i do use Bing.

TTPBM same

message 22191: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments I used to use Google mostly but off late I am trying to move away from Google for no good reason. I just want a change. Bored of using Google for years. Stopped using Google Chrome. I am using only Firefox now and sometimes internet explorer. Slowly trying to get away from using Google search engine and started using Bing. Next will be gmail. That will be somewhat difficult as I use it for official work.

TTPBM : Did you like your school life or college life more?

Loved my school life more!! My father was in a job that required him to move to really remote locations all over india, max we stayed at one place was maybe 6-9 months. This went on till I was in class 7 or 8. And in each location the teacher knew that I was in class for a few months only, so I hardly was under any pressure to study!!

And college was an all male engineering class with strict attendance record so not much fun!!

TTPBM--> Who is your favourite thriller author?

message 22193: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Tana French in psychological thrillers. Haven't read any political thrillers in a long time.

message 22194: by Austin (new)
