message 21551: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Chattopadhyay (akanksha_chattopadhyay) | 1126 comments Anna Karenina. While I love nothing more than long books, dragging along for a tjousand pages about absolutely nothing, as this book seems to do, isn't my cup of tea. What on earth is all the fuss about?!

Same

message 21552: by Bookspective (new)

Bookspective | 1170 comments Moby Dick. I found the gore and graphic description of whaling to be repulsive.

TTPBM, same?

message 21553: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments The Iliad. Had it for 5 years, but only got thru half. I reread other books but skip this one.
TTPBM, How's the situation in where u live now?

message 21554: by Aparna (new)

Aparna | 161 comments From Bangalore, everything is almost back to normal. Traffic is slowly getting back to the pre covid state. I am still working from home and taking naps in between work :-)
TTPBM same

message 21555: by Chinmay (new)

Chinmay (chinmay_s) | 160 comments Bangalore. Things are getting back to normal. Theatre has started so I am happy. Hoping that a fresh surge doesn't force us into another lockdown.
Looking forward to going back to office soon.

TTPBM, a book that you finished in the least time?

message 21556: by Bookspective (new)

Bookspective | 1170 comments Burnt Shadows that I read within a week, which is a big thing as I am a slow paced reader and this was a library book. I now have a library membership that lets me keep a book for longer time.
Speaking of which. .. Ttpbm.. do you borrow books from any library?

message 21557: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments I've always borrowed books from the library, since I was 2. I live 2 mins drive away from the library! However, cause of covid, the library opens on demand, and it isn't safe...so I use OverDrive now!
TTPBM, Do you have any siblings?

message 21558: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments Yes, a cute younger sister!

TTPBM, if you're given a golden ticket to go to one place in the whole wide world, where would it be? (ignore technicalities etc. plox :P)

message 21559: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Tromso, Norway to check.out the Northern Lights.

TTPBM : whats the worst cringiest book you have ever read?

message 21560: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments cringiest? Can't say coz I stop reading something the moment I feel it is not worth my time. But The girl on the train annoyed the hell out of me. The film seems decent.

TTPBM : What's the worst book that you took the effort to complete?

message 21561: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments One to Watch this is the most hypocritical nonsense on positive body image Ive ever read. And I really hoped it would redeem itself sometime, but no it doesnt. I really wanted to like this one.😪 and im in absolute minority with my rating of this book.

TTPBM : Do you like books with pets and if so whats your favorite?

message 21562: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments I don't like books told in the perspective of pets or with the main plot centered around a pet. But if the Main character has a pet, I'm totally cool with that.
TTPBM, What was the shortest time it took you to complete a book and which book was it?

message 21563: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Among decent sized books, it should be South of the border, West of the sun by Murakami. I read it at a library quite far from home n had to complete before the closing time. I rushed; otherwise I am a slow reader

Same?

message 21564: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Actually Im.a very fast reader. A decent sized bk of 300 pages I can gobble up within a day max 2. romance is quicker than crime. I try not to discard any book.

TTPBM: is there any book you have discontinued within 50 pages?

message 21565: by Abish (new)

Abish (abish4i) | 1266 comments I don't remember much from my previous reads even though I try to read as slow as possible
Few books are very hard to comprehend or they are just above my a level above my head ( I finish atleast 10 percent and move on )

TTPBM
If you could learn a new foreign language what would it be ?

message 21566: by Akanksha (new)

Akanksha Chattopadhyay (akanksha_chattopadhyay) | 1126 comments I would love to learn Italian next.

Ttpbm: same. Also why this particular language?

message 21567: by Abish (new)

Abish (abish4i) | 1266 comments I'd say japanese_ already in progress...

For Manga and Anime
NO just a cornerstone
Actually I'm starting to think it would be awesome, apart from having that on resume next to programming languages xD

TTPBM: Are you checking in with yourself ?

message 21568: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments actually yes, pretty consistently especially with a lot of Reiki and meditation.

TTPBM : what did you think will happen to all the 12th graders if the exams are either postponed or cancelled? esp with college admissions depending on it

message 21569: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments @Abish wow Japanese? I've.a cousin who has not only mastered it but also did a lot of eng - Japanese translations. all the best its not an easy language to. learn

message 21570: by Abish (new)

TTPBM : what did you think will happen to all the 12th graders if the exams are either postponed or cancelled? esp..."

In long run I think atleast 3-4 months is needed for us to recover from recent hit...
As far as students are concerned either 12th or MBA what-ever as long as you are fine your goals matter what's the point of chasing something that is almost irrelevant other than getting a good college.

I saw people standing in queue crying as they are about to get tested for Covid 19. Ig nobody wants the future generation to join this queue.

TTPBM: Is the government incompetent or the people in general are ignorant ? (Considering current scenario)

message 21571: by RTi (new)

RTi | 43 comments People are certainly ignorant, at least in my area.

same

message 21572: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Think it is both. ppl got a bit careless coz cases were dropping and thought we were seeing the end of it. Even I, who was always careful wrt covid, dropped guard n went n watched a couple of movies n stuff. At the same time, many ppl were warning about the 2nd wave bcoz it was happening in the US n UK n we are bound to get it in some time. so govt with its panel of experts should have been ready to a certain extent at least.

same?

message 21573: by Madiha (new)

Madiha | 221 comments Guessing ur talking about the situation in India.
Both, the people aren't being careful and the government isn't forcing them to.

TTPBM, One thing that Covid made you miss?

message 21574: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments freedom of movement. even if I'm not someone who's out every weekend the liberty of deciding whether I want to go is what I miss most.

TTPBM: The one activity that you've committed yourself to because of Covid

message 21575: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments Was doing yoga n breathing exercises by watching youtube for a while but couldn't stick to that too consistently.

TTPBM, what's your favorite line/dialogue from any work of literature?

message 21579: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments "After all , tomorrow is another day" by Scarlet O'hara from Gone with the Wind. I love the optimism and the absolute reality of that simple line.

TTPBM: Same

message 21580: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments @Meera, ill be visiting Hyderabad for a very long stay with my mom. Its really been too long (:

message 21581: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments That is a nice quote. But you never know what tomorrow will bring and if you are equipped to deal with it.

Anyway, I like this opening line of Love Story: “What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? (I am paraphrasing it a bit here) That she was beautiful and brilliant, Loved Mozart and Beethovan, and me” ...It doesn't come across as saying anything very perceptive but a great opening line.

Any great line from a movie/book?

message 21582: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments Kitne Admi the ? how can one ever forget Gabber Singh? and Sholay? there are a number of unforgettable dialogues from this one movie

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own, than when you almost broke it eight years and a half ago.
Jane Austen, Persuasion

Prem (toprem) | 556 comments Historical fiction and magical realism.
TTPBM: How you choose book to read?

message 21591: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments It's a long process. Subject of the book has to interest me first and foremost. I care less about high ratings and popularity of the book. I go through the reviews on Goodreads and sometimes on Amazon as well. I sample excerpts from Amazon Kindle. I do more digging on various Internet forums if info garnered is meagre. I also explore websites of certain libraries to discover like for like books. If the book passes all these hurdles then it goes into my TBR. Certain books I know right from the outset that it will be damn good just by reading the vignette and i don't really do investigation on those books especially books from authors I trust like John Grisham, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, Rabindranath Tagore, Khushwant Singh, Patricia Cornwell, Robin Cook, Michael Crichton etc to name a few. I am tentative and wary of authors whom I have never tried before. Lol. That said I do like to explore unfamiliar authors from time to time.

TTPBM : Do you like to read medical thrillers and forensic/medical thrillers?

message 21592: by Visalakshi (new)

Visalakshi (vishu-potter) | 231 comments Yes I do! They are interesting, informative and mildly scary to think what will happen if those story lines actually happened! I loveed the books by Robin Cook and Patricia Cornwell in this genre. I would like to read more from different authors!

TTPBM : What's your favorite historical fiction book and why? If you've not read one yet, what's stopping you?

message 21593: by Barny (new)

Barny (cdbarny) | 10 comments The Nightingale. The emotions and characters felt very raw and real.

TTPBM: Do you read every word or do skeptical reading most of the time? Is reading a hobby or necessity to you?

message 21594: by Munira (new)

Munira Syed | 7 comments Both. Reading for work is a necessity and reading fiction is a hobby. I don't like reading descriptions so I skip those sometimes, but I love reading emotions and savour every word.

TTPBM: Is there a character you've read that you find completely unrelatable?

message 21595: by Visalakshi (new)

Visalakshi (vishu-potter) | 231 comments Isabella Swan from Twilight. Her story as a teenage girl and I read it in my teen.. couldn't find even a single point to relate to.

TTPBM : Do you carry books with you wherever you go? Do you have any preference for your carry on book?

message 21596: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments I used to during my school days. Nowadays I restrict it mostly to home. I prefer to carry weightless books during travel.

(Visalakshi you can try Tess Geritsen's standalone medical thrillers. Life Support gave me the creeps. Story is based on cool concepts like Creutzfeld-Jakobson disease and teratomas. Probably even scarier than a Stephen King novel. I don't have much idea about her Rizoli and Isle series. Probably it's forensic related. Also there's another guy, Michael Palmer. He writes medical thrillers. I loved his Miracle Cure novel. There's also Kathy Reichs who writes mostly forensic thrillers I believe. Yet to read her books.

TTPBM prefers winter to summer?

message 21597: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments *I mean lightweight books

message 21598: by Visalakshi (new)

Visalakshi (vishu-potter) | 231 comments I don't have much preference on the weather. I'm okay with either and I enjoy all the seasons.

(Thank you Austin! I've made of note of the names and I'll be sure to pick one of theirs next time!)

TTPBM : Do you like indoor activities or outdoor?

message 21599: by Austin (new)

Austin George | 4069 comments Indoor

(I hope you enjoy them Vis)

TTPBM has not read a novel primarily set in the Caribbean islands.

message 21600: by Leena (new)

Leena Aluru (mgleena) | 7181 comments what are the carribean islands?? :))

ttpbm
