TTPBM: Which Avengers film did you like best among the ones you've watched? (please pass if you haven't watched)

message 21009: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments Age of Ultron cuz i havent watched Infinity War

TTPBM, favorite horror movie (if any)?

message 21010: by Sharadha (new)

Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments The Omen gave me sleepless nights, so did The Exorcist, forget it, I can't pick a favourite, they all do their jobs well for an anti-horror person like me.

TTPBM: Do you like playing word games? If yes, then do you think that they factor in expanding your vocabulary?

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments I love word games! I've grown up playing Scrabble and I'd still sit down for a game if offered. Scrabble gives more points for better words. In the quest to win, learning good words is a must, so yeah, it does tremendously improve one's vocabulary and diction.

are u a fast reader or do u take ur time?

message 21014: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments Totally depends on the book. If it interests me, I read fast and do nothing else; if it's boring I read as much as it allows me to.

TTPBM, do you have a Kindle/any E-reader? If yes, do you find it better over real books? If no, would you buy one?

message 21025: by Sharadha (last edited May 08, 2018 09:39AM) (new)

Sharadha Jayaraman (jayaras) | 1795 comments I don't own a Kindle at the moment, unfortunately. I've been meaning to buy one for a long time but never got around to making the purchase. But I do heavily use Overdrive and iBooks (E-Reader apps) which are brilliant substitutes, in my humble opinion. So not buying Kindle now.

Are they better than physical copies? Umm, mostly no. Sometimes (when I'm lazy to buy a book that I wish to read and find it on Overdrive), yes.

TTPBM: What do you do when you don't feel like reading a book and want to sleep but can't get sleep easily?

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments I'm reading two right now, Into the Water by Paula Hawkins and The Fates Divide by Veronica Roth. Into the Water relies heavily on the psych of a person: it's a psychological thriller, so it gets boring at times. I'd go with the second book :)

I do own a Kindle. I bought it on launch. And I don't regret it at all.
The debate of e-readers vs physical books is going on for years on r/books. I usually avoid these topics as the discussions turn bitter very quickly. But since this is not a debate, I will list some points below which may help you decide what to do with your money. Hope this helps.

The reasons I bought a Kindle
1. Portability: I stay in student quarters. Also, books are heavy. Putting 6 books in your bag when you go home or shift a room is a pain in the buttocks.

2. The discounts: Apart from the classics being free, the discounts are overall great. Eg. At the time of writing this comment, the price of The Bear and the Nightingale on Amazon is Paperback:399 and KindleEd: 238.

3. Self Published Books: Lot of authors self publish their books and give out free copies for review.

Reasons not to buy a Kindle
1. Can I do x on my Kindle ?: You cannot do anything other than read books and update goodreads progress on a Kindle. Kindle is not a tablet, it is a e-book reader.

2. Cost of the device: mine cost me 10k. some people roll their eyes when I tell them that I spent this much money on a device which cannot run WhatsApp.

3. You still have to buy most of the books: Only the classics are free. Although the discounts are heavy, people expect the books to be free when you spend so much money. You can download books for free from the Internet but that is a point that turns people off.

Things I observed after I bought a Kindle
1. I like to read at night before sleeping: Living with roommates makes it difficult to manage light in the room. In my case, my roommates sleep before me and it just not polite to keep all the lights on for reading a chapter before sleeping. My Kindle comes with an illuminated screen so that I can read at night.

2. Buying a physical copy is an event: I bought a physical copy of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and was elated when it arrived on my doorstep. The smell of a new books and turning the physical paper pages gave me more joy than I expected.

3. Easy access to dictionary: The dictionary is great. Didn't know my vocabulary was so crap.

4. The variety: The Stormlight Archive is one of my favorite series. I discovered it on Kindle. When I tried to purchase a physical copy, it was not available in any of the book stores in my city.

5. Smartphones: The Kindle apps on Android and ios are actually quite good. If you are comfortable reading on you phone or tablet, you don't really need an extra device. I have shared my account with my father, so he can read any book that I buy on his phone.

Hope this helps. Think carefully before buying because the device is not cheap.

message 21034: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments Well written that :) I have a Kindle too but the joy of buying a real book still knows no bounds.

message 21035: by Jerry (new)

Jerry Jose (jerryjose7) | 469 comments Tangible copies always, ebooks when you cant.

I use both tbh, its easy to conitnue the book through e copies while travelling, waiting for commute or even waiting.

message 21038: by Yash (new)

I get that hard work vs smart work doesn't pays off if you aren't that lucky ...

TTPBM , What if you made a decision yet not sure what if you were wrong afterall ?
Do I need to apologise, provide explanation or get over it ...
What would be your call...?

message 21040: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments What's done is done, so I don't tend to dwell on the awry decisions I make. I just let them be as is. If I offended somebody, I'd apologize, certainly.

TTPBM, are you the "Thank God, it's Friday" type of person, or the "Okay, it's just another day" type?

ttpbm- do religion and politics influence you?

message 21045: by Sagar (last edited May 12, 2018 01:28AM) (new)

Sagar (krishdareader) | 60 comments Nope.
Politics - Indian sleazy political system is an anathema to me.
Religion - I'm an atheist.

TTPBM - your opinion on the caste based reservation system in India?

message 21046: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments It sucks. Period. I want it done away with. I mean, I'm okay with the empowerment of the less privileged, but that doesn't mean you give away half of everything to them even if they don't have the talent for it.

I take the example of the Joint Entrance Examination, the gateway to the IITs, NITs and other prestigious engineering colleges in India (I'm giving it this year, so I know the stats).

This year, the cutoff for the general category was 75/360 (lowest ever). A friend of mine scored 74 and was crying for not clearing the cutoff. On the other hand, the cutoff for the SC and ST candidates goes right down to 29 and 24 respectively. Remember, this is out of 360 marks! Literally, all they have to attempt is 8 questions out of the 90 to clear the paper. Get a 100 marks, and they get themselves a seat in one of the better NITs, something general candidates struggle to get even with a 150. Tell me, is this fair? Not in my opinion.

These are my honest words, and I think many might be against it, but well, it's a free country, there's bound to be contrasting viewpoints.

TTPBM, same?

message 21047: by Selva (new)

Selva | 3391 comments I have a mixed opinion about this. I belong to OBC and I had a marginal advantage in landing the engg seat i did / I wud have still got it had I belonged to the GC- it was long time back - the point is I didn't think about the socio-economic ramifications of the entire system at that time. But still a lot of ppl from the forward category still made it to my class. Now having read a lot of FB posts about this of late, I think you need to redefine who is 'underprivileged' and apart from caste(significance of which should be limited) other socio-economic factors like the income status, if somebody is from a village or someplace where they do not have access to things which would put them on a equal footing with the rest, if they are first graduates in their family should be taken into account. I know it is easier said than done but without such a system, it would be a rich getting richer and poor getting poorer kind of thing.

same?

message 21048: by Sagar (new)

Sagar (krishdareader) | 60 comments It's about time we remove those training wheels from the bicycle.
Their ancestors were poor, lacked education and opportunities, they deserved reservations. Thanks to reservations the ancestors got education, equality, opportunities
and the standard of living has increased dramatically for their descendants (current generation).
My sc neighbor is richer than my oc neighbor. And yet my beloved sc neighbor uses reservations to get scholarships, college seats, and jobs while my oc neighbor struggles. Government can't remove reservations. It would be a political suicide for the ruling party.
Only these pampered groups can remove reservations. It's never gonna happen as they're reluctant to relinquish their freebies.

TTPBM - paperback or kindle?

message 21049: by Yash (new)

Yash (vyash2k) | 809 comments Kindle, for the convenience and the added features. Paperback for the emotions.

Same?

Totally agree with that. It's gonna take some kind of daredevil with superpowers to even attempt such a move. You could see the situation caused when the SC tried to modify *one simple statement* in their "special status" - riots all around! They were rioting right outside my society on the intersection for half the day. I'm pretty sure the havoc caused will be much worse if the lawmakers try to modify the SC/ST Act. Nobody will even risk it :/
