Cleon Lee | 2235 comments Np physical book for me either. I want to suggest a humorous book. Like Josh said, not everyone laugh at the same humor, so I am wondering what works for some people and what doesn't. Any suggestion? Most humorous stories I've read are short, like Tortoise Interruptus and Caged.

How about Anything for You by Ethan Day? Ethan Day is quite popular for writing stories with humorous tone that a lot of people enjoy.

I'd love to find a gay romantic comedy. I've read a few that have been recommended as such, but none of them have hit the right spot yet. Caged was fun, but it's too short to support much discussion on it's own. Maybe as part of a small group of comedic stories. We've got an intelligent bunch around here, and I'd love to see what everyone thinks works and doesn't work in m/m romantic comedy. I suspect it's more than just current trends that are keeping rom com from working in this sub-genre.

I haven't read Tortoise Interruptus, but I do like everything I've read by JL Merrow so far, and would be happy to read that. (Although again, short.) And I have Anything For You languishing on the TBR, so I'd be cool with that one, too.

And me! You open your mouth and I buy the book ;-)
I just didn't rate it because I'd like to re-read it before.

Maybe it could be chosen for a later month with a double reading: people against print books can discuss the other choice, and people who want to order it get plenty of time to do so.

Mind Fuck (The Administration, #1) by Manna Francis ?

Absolutely in favor!

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Mind Fuck looks really good! And I'm intrigued by the cover! Looks like it's available in print and ebook so everyone can get one. lol, that would help push my next amazon order over the $25 range so I can buy xmas presents and get free shipping!

message 355: by Josh (new)

Josh (joshlanyon) | 23709 comments Mod
I'd like to do a mystery one of these days just because that's really my favorite thing, but Mind Fuck might be a good choice becasue a lot of it is free online, right? And I promised a friend that I would give it another chance one of these days, so I really need to do that.

And it's kind of an m/m classic in it's own way.

As for Larton. It was originally a fan fiction and I don't think the print version has changed much. So it's possible I can come up with some files eventually, although I would really love everyone to purchase that book because a - it's lovely -- it's like Angela Thirkell meets The Irish RM meets The Professionals, and b - the writer is probably in her seventies by now and could use the dough.

So we'll shelve that temporarily and maybe look at it around Christmas time. I think it would make a nice Christmas read.

message 356: by [deleted user] (new)

Mind Fuck has a mystery in it. A pretty good one actually.

Although a lot of folks complain that solving it bogs down the Toreth/Warrick story. Which would be interesting to discuss.

message 357: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
So you were reading Mind Fuck and put it away Josh? Can I ask why? From what I read it sounded really good.

I'd love to read Larton, and wouldn't mind paying for it, but not for $30. That's a bit much, but there's probably no way to know if it'll ever go back into print or be available as an ebook.

As mentioned already, the best way to order this would be through the publisher.

Though I wish somebody could convince them to e-publish (Josh?? Are you listening?)

Paper or not, I have re-read this book at least three times, not only because being paper it's ideal for the beach. It's also very funny, with a large number of great 3D characters, with quite a few tender moments, too, though extremely well hidden. And if anybody is reading this book for sex: sorry, that only happens behind closed doors. And even that you might miss if you blink.

I mentioned funny moments and there are quite a number of High Giggle ones. Including the ultimate description of a hangover: "Robert was sitting at the table, holding his head in case it fell off".

Buy it, is all I can say. It's very quiet but fabulous.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments You all convinced me. I've just bought it from the publisher. The book is 6.49£ plus 4.00£ for delivery (a little bit more than 12€ (which I think is around 17$)). Not really cheap, but not a bloodshed :)

I payed via Paypal.

It's available at Wayward Books for about $12.00 but then there's shipping on top of that. I'll see about approaching my fandom friends for an digital copy.

I thought MF was very well written. It could have just been my mood? I found the characters a little cold. But I always intended to go back and give it another try, so this would work well, especially because I'd be reading it with a bunch of other people.

Yes. I've read it many, many times as well. And I was jsut getting ready to read it again, which is why the idea occurred. It's one of my major comfort reads.

BUT it's not going to be to everyone's taste. It's very dry, very British in its humor, very lowkey.

But my response was the same as Liade's. I just find it to be a little jewel.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Jordan wrote: "Which book did you buy Emanuela? Was it Larton?"

Yes, sorry, I'm the queen of non-sequitur. It was 4£ for delivery from England to Italy, I have no idea if it costs the same for them to post to the US.

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Is that www.waywardbooksonline.com? Because I typed in the search title and it comes up with 0 hits. $12 is not too bad considering what I sometimes pay for print books. And I'm trusting you when you say it's great and some of you have reread it several times. That means it must be a good book!

That's what I was thinking, but I already went beyond my book budget for this month and the next. I bookmarked it for the future, lol

message 369: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Yup, I went over that budget earlier this month, but I'd be willing to buy one for the group if it looks like something I'd enjoy.

I also noticed how all the covers look similar too. But the plots look sooo good! I'm almost hoping they don't have more m/m titles because then it'll be even worse for me!

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments The similar covers appeal to my bookshelves a lot :)

Did the conversion it's going to be about $20 just for Larton Chronicles in dollars including shipping. That's kind of a lot of money. But all of their books look good. I'm going to have a hard time with this one, I can tell. lol.

Of course a recurring source of amusement in the book is the fact that one of the two main characters is not (really) British but Irish. Irish military at that.

Before we are in too much trouble ;-), can someone point out one, max. two books there really worth reading?

Antonella | 11568 comments Emanuela ~plastic duck~ wrote: "The similar covers appeal to my bookshelves a lot :)"

I like that too, but aesthetically it works only for series (The Administration!), because my books are in alphabetical order. So Wayward Books would be scattered in the shelves...

message 375: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Yup, mine are alphabetical by author's last name.

I didn't read the excerpts... yet. But I will. Maybe when I get home and have more time, I really do want to do that.

Calathea | 6034 comments I would have liked to read Larton Chronicles. It sounds like a fun read, British humor and all... :-)
Administration-series... I don't know. I read MF a while ago and I didn't like it so much. I couldn't feel a connection with the MCs and the background gave me the shivers (and not in a good way).

It is a very character diven book and it has held up to repeated re-reads... and it has a mystery. A very special book.

It is also my favourite of Lyn's, I feel she has become more of an erotic writer as of late.

Nooooooo! Did people tell her that? Grrr... Sex is like sugar, people always want more. But an overuse of sugar doesn't make you a star chef.

PS. Also, with the way Urban Shaman was written, she really stood out.

Hopefully Josh can pull strings, trade on his reputation, promise all kinds of promo, whatever and get this issued as an ebook. I've always thought it looked great but I'm on a strict no DTB diet, here. I kind of cheated and just bought the trade paperbacks of The Lymond Chronicles, but I rationalized that as replacing my 25 yo falling apart cheap paperbacks rather than putting more books on my sagging bookshelves. And I still feel guilty.

The Larton Chronicles is one of my recurring reads, usually during the summer, though it's been a few years now since I reread it. I would certainly enjoy rading it again and discussing it with you guys. :) I have several of the Wayward book titles and enjoyed all of them, so I can relate to those of you who have a hard time choosing titles on their website.

hehe, this is true. It more hints at the main characters' love for each other.

Tracy | 18 comments I guess I'm pretty easily lead as I also purchased The Larton Chronicles from Wayward. I'm looking forward to reading this very much.

In a similar vein, I think, is A Midcoast Murder, which might be fun to read/discuss.

Sounds like enough people have ordered it, or are on the verge of ordering it, that it could be a pretty good conversation. The biggest problem at this point is probably if people can get it in time to read it. Maybe shift The Larton Chronicles to October and pick something else for September.

Unless people were thinking about something spooky for October.

message 393: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Moving Larton Chronicles to October sounds like a good idea... though reading something spooky also sounds like a good idea. And I have no idea what would be considered a good spooky novel. I've got nothing in my to-read list that could be considered spooky. However, I think I'll go buy Larton right now, before I forget. ... like I could.

I'm bad, too. I picked up 3 more books today on the current Fictionwise code. But they were new ones, with the 15% off, plus the 55% off, so at least they were a really good deal!

Josh has Mummy Dearest coming out in early October, but I don't think he'd agree to picking one of his own books.

message 396: by Antonella (new)

The idea was to keep it for later (I think Christmas was mentioned), so that everybody has the time to buy it and then read it.

I was even gonna say November, leave something spooky for October. lol, how did we get to picking books so late? We're already into September and have nothing selected yet?

Yeah, I'm terrible when it comes to books. I got a free download awhile back, finally read it, finished it yesterday and liked it so much I went out and got the following two books in the series. lol, I'm supposed to be reshelving all of my books this weekend, but I can't tear myself away from the series I'm reading darn it! But I really want these books put away! lol, I need a cute guy to come shelve them for me.
