SamSpayedPI | 596 comments I can't think of anything else to nominate. The books I'm reading now, expect to read shortly, or have read recently are later books in series.

I think I'll re-nominate The Long Call as a push for me to watch the TV series. So far I've watched a bit of episode one and found it fairly slow.

Since joining my current department at work where I have to read a lot of adult fiction (versus reading a lot of teen fiction) I find myself reading a lot less M/M Romance. I even buy it for the library, but I still don't feel very in tune with it like I used to.

But I've also been sucked into slash fanfiction for the past few years, so that's also been taking up a ton of my free time.

Here's what I think I will do for The Long Call, since we've had that book nominated many times, if it does not win this poll, I will make it our April BOM no matter what. I think nominations are just down in general too, so that will help with the nominations/poll routines. Does that work?

Same. I've not yet read book two in the series, but this would be a great way to jump into that one this year. :-)

I read The Long Call last July and started watching the television series last night.

Like the Shetland television series, I find The long Call very atmospheric and enjoy the fine acting. I also found it interesting that The Long Call television series is rather lower rated than the Shetland series is on Amazon — mostly due to reviewers who claim not to be homophobic ("some of my best friends are gay"), but really sort of are.

The way the stories are interpreted to film is appealing to me, but could be off-putting. The film stories are told in snippets of scenes that introduce a number of characters and some background information, but it takes awhile for a viewer to weave these together to follow the direction of the plot. When this is done in books it happens at the reader's pace and one can go back and reread to try to clarify. In film we have a series of images that hopefully can eventually be reconstructed in our minds as we continue watching. Yes, we could "rewind," but who does that? (Well, I used to years ago when I was more of a film nut.) :)

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I watched the Long Call as well. It was very atmospheric and haunting. I really enjoyed it but I think I preferred the book. I think I generally prefer books over films/TV versions.

I've only read the first two in the series. I was waiting for the last book to come out to do a reread of those two and then to read all the others. Would anyone want to tackle this with me this year as a BOM? We could just do the first book, or we could treat it like a challenge and read the whole series within the year. Thoughts?

Ginn Hale's Master of Restless Shadows: Book Two is coming out on March 1st!

https://www.amazon.com/Master-Restles...

I've only read the first two in the series. I was waiting for the last book to come out to do a reread of those two and then to read all the others. Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments Count me in. We could have this series as an additional BOM and still have Josh’s books or another option for those who don’t want to read the series. I am quite happy to have two BOMs

message 2817: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
The way our BOM is currently structured, as of 2022, is that Josh’s new books are “extra” so we don’t have to plan around changing release dates and all that. Or you could consider our BOMs as extra reading when there’s a new release. Lol. We are still planning on rereading four of Josh’s books this year, starting with Winter Kill in February.

The question is, aside from Josh’s four books and a The Long Call which we just voted in for March, would folks be comfortable choosing to fill the remaining months with nothing but Ginn Hale’s six book series? Or would you want to continue to vote on other BOM titles and have the Ginn Hale books/discussion be somewhat separate from the regular BOM?

Option A - no more voting for 2022, except for the three remaining Josh rereads, and we start Ginn’s series in April.

Option B - we keep the regularly scheduled BOM as it is and add in a Ginn Discussion separate from the BOM. We could start Ginn’s series whenever.

Let me know what you think!

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments Thanks for this Jordan. I will choose option B because I don’t know if everyone would like to read Ginn’s series. I think we should have Ginn’s series as a challenge read but I would still like to have the books spaced out and we read and discuss one book per month.

This is such a great idea. I have had the first few books of this series on my kindle for ever and it will be great to read it with other people.

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments I vote B. How about something similar to what we did with the Rivers of London series? Is that the "challenge read" that Ije mentions?

message 2820: by Antonella (new)

Antonella | 11568 comments I'm going to read the new book and to reread book 1 for sure, but I'm a bit of a disaster lately with BOMs, so I'll just see what else I can do.

Yes, that would be what we would do. It's been awhile since we've done a challenge read. We did them for a few years in a row, but it was a bit much after awhile. lol.

Though I think what I would do for this series is create one thread for the entire series, rather than a thread for each book.

The good thing about this series is that it's only six books. Though it looks like the last one is over 400 pages, so it might still be a doozy of a series to read in a year, but I'm up for the challenge. Sometimes I think I won't get through something if I don't just blast through it. Especially if I have to remember what happened in previous books!

That's why I stopped reading this series after the first two. I forgot EVERYTHING when I picked up book 3, and then just gave up.

I've created a thread for the Hale Challenge! https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

As most folks have suggested doing it separate from the BOM, it will be separate, so we will be reading these books in addition to the BOM's and Josh's rereads.

If we do one book a month, do we want to start reading in March, to give folks time to get ready? Or would you want to start right away in February? We could read straight through for 6 months, or we could read the books every other month. Thoughts? Let me know. I'm going to put a schedule in the first post of that thread.

message 2827: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Okay, here are the three options:

Option A - Start reading in February, we can read one book every other month, ending in December.

Option B - Start reading in February, read one book every month, ending in July.

Option C - Start reading in March, read one book every month, ending in August.

This is a reminder to nominate titles for our April BOM by Thursday so I can put a poll together.

FUTURE NOMINATING
We haven't been getting many nominations lately (nor have we had much participation) so I want to see if there's something we can do to get more folks involved.

This includes new folks or anyone else in this group who hasn't participated much. Anyone is free to join us at any time and we welcome all thoughts and comments on what we're reading or how we choose the titles.

Here are some options for choosing/nominating/voting on titles we could try:

A. We could nominate say, 21 titles at the beginning of the year, and then vote on our top 7 (assuming we continue to reread 4 Josh titles every year and Josh always picks our Dec read). This way we've planned out our reads for most of the year in advance.

B. Take anonymous nominations for a large number of books and then vote on them throughout the year until the end and in December we nominate new titles for the next year.

C. We can also revisit the idea of choosing themes and then I can pick 5 titles for us to vote on with time for folks to update the list. Generally, for my library group, I give myself a week to pick 5 titles, give the group a week to suggest other titles/authors, and then a week to vote.

D. We can rotate who chooses the book each month. So, Ije might choose the May title, Sam might choose the June title, and so on and so forth.

E. If we rotate who chooses the book, as in suggestion F, instead of picking one title, we could suggest a few titles for a vote.

F. Take nominations as we have been, but make them anonymous.

G. Anything else I haven't thought of! Please make suggestions.

NEW SHELVES
I've added a new shelf for our challenge read: "2022-challenge-Cadeleonian" and have also included a new shelf for our Josh rereads: "josh-reread-4x". The "4x" is for four times a year.

JOSH REREADS 4X
This is something I'd love to keep doing past 2022. I'd like to propose that in October of this year we nominate some themes for 2023, such as FBI agents, sheriffs, amateur sleuths, rural setting, islands, art... this list could go on! Then we would vote on four of them for next year and I will pick 5 of Josh's titles that fit those themes for voting on specific titles during the year, as we're doing this year. (I will also keep a running list of themes so those can be nominated at any time!)

We would continue to read each title in the following months:
- February (vote in December)
- May (vote in March)
- August (vote in June)
- November (vote in September)

COMMENTS & NOMINATIONS
If you have any thoughts on any of this or titles you'd like to nominate for our April BOM, please let me know below! Let's chat!

Thanks, Jordan, for taking the time to think this through and lay it out for us.

I don't see A or B as the best options because we become aware of new and interesting books throughout the year. But I understand if creating a monthly poll becomes a wee bit tedious (for you). :)

C could work and might gather some interest... or not since there are likely some categories that some of us love and others would never read.

D/E could be a way to share the research/work, instead of it always being on your shoulders.

F is fine by me, but I don't think nominations need to be anonymous... unless I don't know something...

Yes, to the Josh rereads!

I'll try to think of something to nominate, but the AJ Sherwood book you nominated would also be fine with me. It would contrast from the serious tones of both Winter's Orbit and Winter Kill. Most of the Sherwood books I've read as fluffy/rom-com-ish, but with some serious undertones. Enjoyable.

JOSH REREADS

Starting in 2022, we will reread four of Josh's titles! In October we will nominate and vote on four different themes for the upcoming year. Themes can include things like seasons, job titles, subjects such as art or history, amateur sleuths, ghosts, and whatever else you can think of. Jordan will pick five of Josh's titles that fit the themes for each reread and everyone will have a week to suggest changes before voting on the final five books.

Here is the voting and rereading schedule:

- February reread (vote in December)
- May reread (vote in March)
- August reread (vote in June)
- November reread (vote in September)

Okay, it's now time for us to be thinking about our next Josh reread which will take place in May. Our theme for the month is "spring". Any titles you can think of that fit this theme, please let me know! We'll take nominations for one week and the poll will go out next Tuesday. Please, note, even if it's just a phrase or cover art that evokes a touch of sprint, that works too!

Spring is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Winter was easy! lol. Here's what I have so far, but they might not actually be set in spring. It's been awhile since I've read these.

Perfect Day
Fair Play

message 2849: by SamSpayedPI (last edited Mar 10, 2022 12:51PM) (new)

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments Possible Spring book:

Murder at Pirate's Cove ("Through the cold and wet spring they bonded over a mutual love of theater, the New Yorker, cocktails and kitsch." &
“Great-great-great-aunt Eudora had died in February, and though Ellery had been working steadily for the last three months, trying to get everything shipshape . . . ”)

Probables:

A Ghost of a Chance (talks about a "spring moon" and "spring practice").
Murder in Pastel is definitely set in June, but it sounds more like early June ("It was cold for June" and "I had the world to myself that gray morning, though we were past Memorial Day when the 'Summer Folk' arrived.")
Similarly, Fair Play (". . . mid-June was late in the season for grays.")

Definitely Spring:
Stranger on the Shore
I Spy Something Bloody
Dangerous Ground
Night Watch (but it's just a short story).

I'm not nominating all of them, of course, although a lot of them are favorites!
