I haven't read it yet either! But if we don't BOM it next month, it'll be awhile before I get to it. I did buy it though. :-)

I definitely prefer a title that a number of us haven't read, just because it's fun to discover together. But I know what Karen means -- getting to experience a book you loved through the eyes of someone just discovering it is almost like getting to read the book for the first time again.

Given the fact that I rarely have time to do more than pop my head in on these discussions, I really shouldn't be getting too picky. :-)

Not sure about all, but I certainly have. I'd love to discuss it for BOM. Loved it. :D

I'm one of those who haven't read Think Of England yet. But I sure look forward to reading and discussing it with you all.

Sun (sunyoung) Think of England would be a great BOM! It really does have a lot of layers that would be fun to discuss. I've read it but I've been dying to talk about it with others! :D

Agreed. If most people either haven't read it, or we all read it 10+ years ago or something, that helps make something a little more interesting. It appears that there is a good number here who haven't read it. And here I thought I'd be the only one!

message 1510: by Calathea (last edited Jul 09, 2014 01:18PM) (new)

Calathea | 6034 comments I've read it last week and liked it a lot. There are things that I would like to talk about, so BOM would be great. :-)

(maybe we can keepThe Hardest Thing: A Dan Stagg Mystery for the next month after this?)

'Poll ladies' say "Thank you"! (Right, Calathea?) ;-) This sounded pretty much unanimous -- no poll needed. :-)

Think Of England by K.J. Charles will be our August BOM. Thank you for your comments everyone!

I don't think we've planned our September book yet. Correct me if I'm wrong. But if we haven't, I think I'd like to nominate Duet by Eden Winters. It looks really good!

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I second that!! Excellent idea :)

No we haven't yet. Haven't even read/discussed BOM of August... ;-) I'll put it on the list.
I think The Hardest Thing is on the list for September too.

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Awesome. Thanks!

I can't wait to start August's read soon! For some reason I keep feeling like August should already be at least half over. But that's honestly the last thing I want!

I think we need to vote on a September read. The Brothers Bishop was just talked about in another thread. Don't know if we want to officially nominate it here against Duet? Are there any other nominations for September?

message 1520: by Calathea (last edited Aug 29, 2014 11:11AM) (new)

Calathea | 6034 comments Okay, so let's nominate books for BOM September.

The Hardest Thing: A Dan Stagg Mystery was nominated by MtSnow (but no poll was done so I keep that one on the list) and supported by KC and me.

Duet was nominated by Jordan (let me know if you still want to nominate that one, Jordan, or want to switch to The Brothers Bishop). Any supporters?

The Brothers Bishop was considered on the "What else are you reading" topic. Please, let me know if you guys want to nominate it!

Other nominations? Are there interesting new releases? Something you wanted to read for ages? Just let me know.

I think we'll collect nominations over the weekend and I see that I set up a poll on Monday (if needed).

[If you're not sure about the (not so strict) rules of nominating and supporting BOMs, have look at Johanna's explanation.^^]

Thank you for being so organized, Calathea! :-D We're currently having a lively conversation about books -- and life in general -- around our dinner table with Anne and hubby. :-)

And I think we'll be happy with whatever you guys decide to choose. We would definitely be interested to hear everyone's thoughts about The Brothers Bishop. Anne and I have both read it and liked it A LOT. Although we're maybe a bit hesitant to reread it and experience the total feel of inevitable train wreck it makes us feel. :-)

Heh. Tonight the dinner on that table was traditional Scandinavian pulled pork tostada salad with tortillas. :-) And yes, we do wish you would be here too!

I'd like to be there too! Enjoy yourselves!

I'm in favour of The Brothers Bishop because I suspected what you call ''the total feel of inevitable train wreck'' from the moment when I bought it (it was recommended by Uli!), and to read it together could be the push I need to start it.

Oh gosh, now I'm going to have to pick one of those. lol. I wish I had time to read two of them. :-) I'm still really interested in Duet, after just rereading the blurb. Scottish lads and all. *drools* And yet Brothers Bishop does sound good. ... hmmm...

John (arkbear) | 322 comments Calathea wrote: "Okay, so let's nominate books for BOM September. "

Golly. I actually own all of these. That never happens. So obviously, I'd be pleased with any of the selections. The Hardest Thing is been next-but-one on my infinitely-shuffling-TBR list for a while. Duet was an impulse buy a while ago, but some other shiny bobble distracted be before I could actually read it. Brothers Bishop's savage beauty would make for an interesting discussion. I found it a bit like being run over by a tank, but such books are often great to talk about. As therapy if for no other reason.

I found a little bargain on Barnes & Noble a couple of weeks ago that might be worth thinking about sometime. The Detective Lane Casebook #1 by Garry Ryan In a single volume, Garry Ryan's Queen's Park, Lucky Elephant Restaurant and A Hummingbird Dance (So three for the price of one.) I understand the books are well-regarded, but can't vouch for them otherwise. Yet.

I think that savage beauty is a perfect way to describe this book. As well as the run over by a tank expression. :-)

I loved The Hardest Thing: A Dan Stagg Mystery so i'd be happy to reread it for BOM.

My second choice would be The Brothers Bishop.

message 1538: by Calathea (new)

Calathea | 6034 comments The poll is up! Decide what will be Book of the Month September!

Click the link to get to the poll: What do you want to read in September?

The poll ends at September 3rd. That should give us enough time for purchasing the book and reading. ;-)

The poll is anonymous. Results will be shown after the time is up.

You can find links to the books at the bottom of the poll so can have a look at them before deciding...

Calathea | 6034 comments Looks like we have a winner! :-)

The Hardest Thing: A Dan Stagg Mystery won with 6 votes and will be BOM September.

The Brothers Bishop and The Detective Lane Casebook #1 came in second with 4 votes each and third was Duet with 3 votes.

That was closer than I had expected. After all the talking about The Brothers Bishop I was quite sure it would take the first place.

Have fun reading and discussing Dan Stagg!
I read the sample and decided that I'm not really in the mood for it; I will stick to the Henry-Rios-books for now trying to finish the challenge and than I would like to reread Kit and J.X. before TBWTPT comes out :-)

Based on the theory that the best cure is to realise that someone else has it worse? ;)

Because it certainly isn't a book full of fun and laughter....

I still want to discuss it, so I second Antonella's suggestion.
