I'm conflicted. On the one hand, I don't want to deal with Loose-ID again. I'm unwilling to give them my detailed financial information -- and I don't have throwaway credit cards anymore. And they don't take paypal (the lone exception of all the places I buy books).

So I'm stuck. I'm willing to cough up the somewhat steep $7.99, but noone willing to sell it to me via sane means. My previous two purchases there -- This Rough Magic and Last Line were exceptions and via resources I can't employ any more.

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments I've just purchased the book and there was a surprising 0.80$ discount :)

Maybe we should petition them to add paypal?

I already bought the book, but I too prefer paypal to having to type in the credit card info every time I want to buy one of their books.

Yes, I was surprised by that as well :)

Oh, really?
I must have missed that. Safe to say they didn't do anything annoying to me ...

Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments Found it, it was them.

Why can't I pay via PayPal?

Due to recent actions taken by PayPal against purchasers of adult-oriented e-books, we can no longer offer PayPal as a payment option for Loose Id merchandise. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please rest assured that all payment information sent to Loose Id is secure. For more information on the security of your personal information, we invite you to read our Privacy Policy.

Kaje Harper Hm. Don't recall hearing about this. I wonder what PayPal did? I sometimes buy throw-away credit cards for online use, but you do pay a premium for the card.

message 308: by ns (new)

ns (vedi) Yes, that is exactly the msg they sent me when I asked them about Paypal support.

Jane | 73 comments Some credit card companies are doing this to certain booksites because they feel they should not be responsible for people buying 'X' rated material. The booksites will have to find an alternative method of payment...like credit card..unless credit cards start that policy too! I don't agree with it.

I know if paypal catches you taking money for sexually-oriented materials they'll shutdown your account. (I know a few women who sell panties and have had problems with this.) Maybe they're extending the rule all the way to books? It's pretty ridiculous that we have to twist ourselves in knots to buy romance novels, just because the ones we want aren't 1 man + 1 woman.

Well, I pay for most my ebooks (all m/m btw) via paypal, and I've had no problems yet ... *keeps fingers crossed*

Merith | 361 comments Credit Card companies will most likely never shut down accepting transactions from legitimate websites - pornography or not. The only exception would be those sites where it is illegal in some states and or countries.

Credit Card companies want those exchange dollars, and the finance charges incurred with each ka-ching you spend.

I hope this doesn't happen to me. I love paypal. I hate that this is so invasive of privacy in one's own home.

message 318: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Hey, they're considering legislation that would require all Internet providers to keep records of all your site visits and all your keystrokes for a year (speaking of privacy).

message 319: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Sorry, too political. Just caught me at a bad moment. I still buy books in paper with cash when I can. Just because. Like the Kindle reporting your highlighting of passages back to Amazon. Everyone seems to be in our personal space these days.

message 320: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments Kaje wrote: "Hey, they're considering legislation that would require all Internet providers to keep records of all your site visits and all your keystrokes for a year (speaking of privacy)."

There are supposedly ways around this, although I don't remember how off the top of my head. (I'm not much of a techie.) Also, the reason behind it is to bust child pornographers, but it's almost worthless. There's no way that the police or FBI could ever keep up with the massive amounts of information that a wide net like this would bring in.

message 321: by Jane (new)

Jane | 73 comments I hope not. That idea is way too invasive and innocent people will get caught.

message 322: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper Part of the point is not what the government would do with it, but if that info is out there it will be accessed by other people for commercial/criminal/censorship reasons. Like PayPal deciding where you can use your own money, there's a slippery slope to privacy issues.

I know there were a lot of problems with PayPal and adult merchandise a couple of years ago. I don't know that it continues to be a problem. Or if PayPal became large enough that those kinds of moral eccentricities no longer made business sense?

Okay, so both books next month... I've already got one, and I'll see if I can manage to buy a few books this month. I have a very long list of books I need to buy!

I'm assuming we're talking about these for September.

Also, is there another place to find the Dancing book? I've looked on amazon and it's not there, not even in ebook format. I determined I can go on a mini book-buying binge, and would like to get them all at once to make things easier if I can. Thanks!

Wait. Aren't these for this month? I'm totally confused now.

No, the book is so far only available on the LI site. LI keeps all new releases 1-2 months on their own site to ensure maximum royalties.

Eh, that's ok! If this is for the August read, which is already half over... I won't have time to read both anyway, so we're good. Wow, guess I'd better get reading!
Thanks Josh!

I kind of wanted to suggest a print book but it's probably not at all practical.

Has anyone here (besides me and Liade) read The Larton Chronicles? It's one of my all time favorite books and I'd love to share it with you guys.

Although Larton Chronicles looks very interesting it might be a little tricky to order it. I've just looked it up on amazon.de, amazon.com and bookdepository.com and it's either out-of-stock or available as used copy only (prices starting around $ 32).

Print wouldn't be an absolute "no" for me, although I really prefer ebooks. But it looks like this one is out of print. The only place I've found it so far is Amazon, and what they have is pricey. Maybe we can keep this one in mind for the future, if it's reissued or someone finds a case of them and lists at a reasonable price.

It sounds great to me but could be a bit late to get it shipped for September. I found it at Amazon (expensive!): http://www.amazon.com/Larton-Chronicl...

And at an English publisher: http://waywardbooks.com/books.html

message 338: by Josh (new)

Josh (joshlanyon) | 23709 comments Mod
So that's about $12.00 which is probably a bit pricy to ask of you -- and it doesn't include shipping -- so maybe that wasn't such a great idea.

Or at least not in the immediate future.

Let me think a bit more. I bought a ton of books based on recs here so I should look through and see what Iv'e got that you all might be interested in.

My print budget is almost exclusively for non-fic. I find it completely impossible to absorb anything without the aid of post-its and highlighters. Some behaviors just can't be unlearned, I guess.

It still sounds like a great book. Maybe we could choose it in the future so we've got plenty of time to purchase it and also have a second book for that month so those who prefer buying ebooks have a choice as well.

message 342: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments Maybe we should collect the print-only suggestions and have a paper month every once in a while. If we plan a couple months in advance it would give everyone time to price shop and have them delivered. And I know there are some good books out there that aren't available digitally. That would give me the push to go ahead and read some of them. Otherwise it's too easy to pass them by for the instant gratification of ebooks.

message 343: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
lol, you all know I LOVE print. If it weren't for that high price, I'd read it. It sounds like the perfectly delightful read I need. It's got a cop and it's sounds sweetly romantic. What more could I want? I put this on my to-read list, so I'm hoping it becomes more widely available someday!

message 344: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
I'd suggest stuff for next month, but I can only suggest the books I haven't read that I can actually FIND in my apartment, viewing that all of my books and the rest of my belongings are still in garbage bags so the exterminators can work. (I'm hoping one more spray from them and I can then unpack everything.)

OMG, I just remembered a book, sadly, I just read it, but I'd gladly reread it again next month: Angel 1089 by CC Bridges. FANTASTIC read about a futurisitic world and a fallen angel with a human and a daughter. So there's my suggestion, cause everything else sitting next to me is either something we just read last month, or part of a series past book one, or even something one of our group members has written!

message 345: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 232 comments I would suggest Mind Fuck, but perhaps too many people have already read it? The ducky discussion has really raised my interest.

Angel 1089 sounds interesting and like something I would enjoy reading.

message 346: by Becky (new)

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1052 comments I took a look through my TBR, and Brushback might be of interest, too. I think it was a freebie on Amazon earlier this year (I think that's how it ended up on my TBR list), so some folks may already have it. And it's only $.99 now, so not much of a risk for an unknown.

I'd be good with Mind Fuck, too, assuming the plastic duck conversation hasn't scared too many people off. :)

message 347: by Charming (new)

Charming (charming_euphemism) Becky wrote: "I took a look through my TBR, and Brushback might be of interest, too."

It isn't very good, though. TSTL MC detective for starters.

message 348: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (ysareader) I've had Boystown: Three Nick Nowak Mysteries sitting on my kindle for a while. Maybe that might be interesting.

Or Josh could suggest something else that he would like to read.

message 349: by [deleted user] (new)

Brushback is a marginal read. One of those where the reader is told that the MC is an awesomely competent PI who then makes one stupid, amateur move after another so that the plot can work.

That's a bummer. Occasionally you can play off a dumb detective for laughs (I'm thinking Stephanie Plum), but generally it's a problem.
