Hi Everyone,

So Josh’s next book comes out May 22nd, which is pretty far into the month.

Do you want to read one of our voted books first? We can start reading/chatting about Scandal at the Salty Dog on the 22nd into June, but we would read something else first.

Or set Scandal for our official June read and just wait until June.

Or we don’t read anything else first, and we just wait for the 22nd.

Thoughts?

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I have lost track of what we are reading.

The House in the Cerulean Sea was our first vote and Love is a Stranger was our second. So if we read something first, it would be House.

Hi Everyone,

I've set up a poll to help us better determine how we want to handle our BOM in May and June, but mostly in May. I hope these options make sense. The poll will stay up until midnight on Friday, the 30th. Thank you for voting!

Loretta (loris65) | 1545 comments My thought is we do our scheduled book of the month, and when Josh has a book come out we start a thread right away for that book. I don't know about you, but I usually start Josh's books as soon as possible. If I have to wait a few weeks to discuss it, I forget all the insightful comments I want to make. I do like to read the other selected books of the month. It broadens my horizons.

Hi Everyone!

The poll results are in, and we are reading both The House in the Cerulean Sea AND Scandal at the Salty Dog this month!

As Scandal comes out on the 22nd, we will read The House in the Cerulean Sea first. Here are the discussion threads:

May 2021 - 1: The House in the Cerulean Sea: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
May 2021 - 2: Scandal at the Salty Dog: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Happy Reading!

Scandal at the Salty dog has had a change in release date to June 2021, so we will not be reading it in May.

Scandal at the Salty Dog just dropped, if you had it preordered, so we will read that next for our BOM!

UPDATES!!!

As per Josh's update, we will now be reading Body at Buccaneer's Bay in July and The 12.2-Per-Cent Solution in August.

Love is a Stranger is a book we had voted on, but have yet to read. We'll read it the next time there's a month without a Josh release.

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Hi all, it appears that the next two of Josh's books will be out towards the end of July. This means we can either read Love Is a Stranger in July, and read one of the others (Body at Buccaneer's Bay & The 12.2-Per-Cent Solution) in August. OR we can just skip a July read and read one of Josh's when they come out. Since it's now summer time and most folks will be on vacation, I'm almost inclined to wait until the next Josh title comes out.

Thoughts?

Hi Everyone,

I'm about to head off on vacation, and while I will likely still be around here on GR, I might not be here as frequently as usual. So I set up our July BOM a day early and made the call that we will wait until Josh's Body at Buccaneer's Bay comes out towards the end of the month and that will be our only book this month.

Here is the discussion thread for it whenever you're ready: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Against my best efforts, my writing schedule REALLY hit the skids this summer, so while I'm eager to hear what you guys think of the books as they come out, I really feel maybe we should also schedule another book of the month as well, so if I'm late, there's still plenty to discuss--and so it's not always me, me, me.

We do still have Love Is a Stranger that we voted on awhile back and still haven't read.

We can also do something else where we each pick our own book for the month and then talk about each one. So no voting.

Hi Everyone,

I've made some changes to our BOM schedule based on the changed release date for Josh's next book.

Let's take some nominations in the upcoming week for a September read! I'll post the poll a week from today. If any of Josh's book should come out before the end of September, we can always move things around, but this way we'll have something to read regardless of what happens.

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
I'm going to nominate an older title: Simple Justice, which was rereleased in eBook recently. I THINK the author made some changes to the text, but I bought a hardcover several years ago and would really like to get around to reading it one of these days!

It's also available on Overdrive, so your libraries should be able to buy it if they do Overdrive.

Hi everyone,

Since I’ve not heard a single word from anyone is there something else you’d rather do, or some other way you’d like to do this? Or is everyone just on vacation?

Speaking from experience, creativity doesn’t always run on a schedule. Lol. We all know we’re going to read Josh’s latest book no matter what, right? Maybe the easiest thing is to carry on the BOM every month, regardless of what Josh is doing, and I can open a second thread for her books when they come out. Maybe they can live in a different section. I seem to recall we had a section once for discussing only her books when we did rereads and such. Maybe we do something similar, but for new books? I suggest this to make scheduling things and voting easier, but also because she’s releasing new material later in the months, which can make it hard to know what to read when.

Anyway, please let me know your thoughts, if you should have any. I want us to enjoy our monthly BOMs! To that end, if you have any thoughts about the BOM, how it’s run, what we read, how we vote, when we vote, how we discuss books, please let me know that too. I would love to increase participation somehow.

My library book group switched to reading by different themes in 2020, which could be fun for us too, perhaps. They voted on the themes ahead of time (this year we did a lot of author identities like Black authors, authors with a disability, but also culinary memoirs, mysteries for October, and so on). Then I chose five titles for each month, gave them time to comment on them (one person had read all of my Black author suggestions and offered up three others I could swap in), and then let them vote on those five.

We could do something similar if you’d like!

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I think it would be good to have two threads. One for a BOM which isnt Josh's books and one for reading Josh's books whenever they are published.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I would like to nominate The Apothecary's Garden and/or The Weight We Carry simply because they are in my to read pile, although Apothecary's Garden is a re read.

message 2728: by SamSpayedPI (new)

SamSpayedPI | 596 comments I'm still busy with the M/M Romance scavenger hunt so didn't answer.

I'd rather have Josh's latest release as a BOM rather than separate read, because I think I'm less likely to participate in the BOM if I'm also reading Josh's book that month.

But that might just be scavenger hunt brain talking; reading two books in a month shouldn't normally be a problem for me. And if I skip the BOM once in a while, it's hardly the end of the world.

message 2729: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
It’s definitely okay to skip the BOM every now and then! I’m not keeping attendance records or docking points if you don’t read anything. Lol. But in general I think we’ve been quiet and I’d like to see things pick up a bit. Of course, it’s summer time (here in the US anyway) when participation is usually low and I’m sure the ongoing pandemic isn’t helping either.

I'd be happy to group-read either Simple Justice (which I haven't read) or The Apothecary's Garden (which I read back in 2013). Simple Justice sounds like a gritty mystery and The Apothecary's Garden was (as much as I remember) a typically magical Julie Bozza story. I could be in the mood for either. :)

message 2731: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
Meant to also say I’ve not read either of those and they both look good!

message 2732: by Teal (new)

Teal (howiebing) | 1943 comments I was kind of overwhelmed this week, and knew I had to respond to this thread, but it kept not happening. Sorry!

I have Simple Justice in my TBR pile, so I'd be up for that.

It would work better for me if the BOM and Josh's books were managed separately, because then I could plan in advance -- very useful if I need to borrow the BOM book, for example.

message 2733: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
No worries! And thanks for your thoughts, Teal (and everyone else so far!)

I think initially Josh wanted to make sure we were discussing her books as well as others. I think she gets a lot out of our discussions. So we just need to find a way to make sure we do have those discussions but that our BOMs are more organized and whatnot, as you said, Teal.

Anyway, it seems the majority want separate areas, so far. If others have thoughts let us know. We’re usually a quiet place on the weekends so add your thoughts into next week. I’ll then chat up Johanna and Josh about it and finalize a plan.

We have that section New From Josh with one thread in it, that I think could be repurposed, and that one thread starred so it’s always at the top. I’d also like to create general threads there for her major series like AE and H&M for ongoing discussions. ... I was thinking a lot about this this morning. Lol.

We also need to start planning and voting two months out for those who borrow from their library!

I’m assuming no one so far wants to go radical and try something like themes? Not saying we have to, just throwing the idea into the ring. Lol.

message 2734: by Teal (new)

Teal (howiebing) | 1943 comments I don't find myself drawn to themes — probably because it seems a bit like homework. 🤨

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I am not too keen on themes but that is because I do other book challenges. (Popsugar and Book Riot). I would still participate in the BOM though if you choose to use themes. Other people might enjoy that.

message 2736: by Jordan (new)

Jordan Lombard (jslombard) | 15348 comments Mod
And that’s totally okay! Sometimes using themes makes things easier, other times not so much.

The poll winner for the September read is The Apothecary's Garden!

Do folks want to go with Simple Justice for our October read without a second vote? Then we would vote next month for our November read.

Otherwise, Lee Welch has a new book coming out in September I would love to nominate, but I can go either way, and nominate this one another time.

Ije the Devourer of Books | 1994 comments I dont mind. I have read Simple Justice but it will be nice to discuss it with everyone.

message 2742: by Karen (new)

Simple Justice is also fine with me for October. I didn't vote because I own all three books nominated and was happy to read/re-read (Apothecary's Garden) any of them.
