Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I love my Anthropology books! I could never give them up.

message 202: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't put down a book until I finish a chapter. It's a very annoying habit especially if the chapter is really long. I've tried but just can't do it!

I too kept most of my undergrad books. Now I might go back to grad school I am sure I'll keep all those if I go. I loved finding books no one wrote in.

Also, I hate when pages are missing from books. That has only happened when I've bought books from garage sales or Estate sales. I always forget to look inside!

Angela | 1934 comments I kept all my undergrad books, which were mostly psychology and I also have kept my graduate books, which are all counseling. I also have bought quite a few that I have used for my internship because I felt like I was going to intern at a school without a clue as to how to counsel a student. I am almost done with my internship and I almost never consult my books!

I use to have quirks when it came to books having bent pages, but since I rarely buy them I really do not have any real book quirks.

Melody | 564 comments I dont really have any quirks about the books I read. I am a borrower (local library), not a buyer. I used to buy books but now with 3 kids and a sick hubby, the library suits me fine. I do have a special bookmark that a friend brought back from Kuala Lumpur that I treasure. I dont like to see pages earmarked and I am always fixing and taping the books that I borrow especially if they have even the slightest tear.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments Ohh Bambi, That would really upset me. I can't believe the librarian can't talk to the person...give me a break.

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments That's funny! I wonder if they edit for a living or just wish they did...? Although it must be pretty annoying. Typos happen  Why the need to mark up the book? Write a letter to the editor or something...way more effective that way.

Suzanne | 157 comments Linda,

Very interesting that you read 50 ppgs. of a book and then 50 of another book the next day. I'm not sure I could do that. I tried to read many books at once but most times usually prefer one over the other. And then I wouldn't be reading pages of the other book & they might get jealous, lol. Although, I'm reading The Shack & I'm also thinking of starting another book as well. Not, that I don't like The Shack but I can pick up on the spiritual aspect of this book at any time. But, I just can't allow myself to do that.

Julianne | 314 comments reading some of you talk about textbooks reminds me that I would spend AGES going through the used books at the school book store to find one that wasn't highlighted. Highlights bug me, because it's like someone else saying "HEY! Pay attention!!! This is important!!" I'll decide for myself what's important.

Especially when someone highlights every other line. Blech!

I usually am reading 2 books at a time-an audiobook and a text. If I'm not really engaged in a book, though, I may start another one, meaning I could have 4+ books going on. I have short stories all over the house, though, so I don't know if I'd consider that a "currently reading", cause I know it will take me like a year to finish!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments Fiona, One of my favorite books, Saving Fish From Drowning by Amy Tan, had pages missing in the middle of it. I couldn't believe it, as this had never happened to me before. I rushed to Borders, where I had purchased the book, and they gave me a new copy. The manager said that it happens all the time. I was shocked, to say the least.

message 210: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Kathy - I have a bookshop and in the nearly six years I've been open its only happened once to my knowledge. And it happened to me! And it was ...... Saving Fish From Drowning. Obviously a really badly-bound book.

message 211: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Grace, I take off the covers of my hardback books as well. Unfortunately in the climate I live in (rainforest) they often curl up. If I forget to put them back on for a few days they never really go flat again unless I iron them.

message 212: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) It isn't that hot. Its between 72-79 every day of the year, plus there are the trade winds to cool it. Where I live is right above the Caribbean sea and I can see little islands dotting the horizon :-) Its fantastic living here with my own bookshop and cafe, but I don't make any money and that's the real downside.

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Yesterday my hubby was talking to me about "smelling books" and how he thought it was just crazy.

I couldn't help but laugh. While I'm not big on book smelling, I did go on and on about how my online friends at GR are smellers.

Don't get me wrong. If there's an older book with a leather cover/binding, I'm not opposed to a good whif, but otherwise I'm just not a smeller.

Abigail (42stitches) | 360 comments I am also kind of amused by all the book smellers. I really only do it to make sure they aren't moldy. I'm a little surprised to find that so many people really enjoy smelling books. I can't knock it though. Some books do smell really good for some reason. I caught myself sniffing one the other day. And I'm not sure why, but it was so comforting at that moment. And I had to laugh a little, thinking of all of this.

message 215: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I've never even thought of smelling books. I may have to start to see what I'm missing.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I agree Grace...I love the feel and smell of new Bibles. :~)

message 217: by Renee (new)

Renee I also like the smell of new books! There's a few indie bookstores in Philly where there isn't a cafe' - no coffee competing with the new books!

As much as I would love to buy more used books, I have terrible dust, mold and mildew allergies! I collect books by Edith Nesbit so I checked out a wonderful used book store and had to leave after 20 minutes. The owners had received boxes of old books so stacks of books had been moved around to make room - dust, mold and mildew moved around too! I felt like I was having an asthma attack (my Mom has asthma)!! The owner put my name on a list and would call me when a Nesbit book came in, I would stop by and pay for the book quickly!!!

hmmm...maybe we should create drive - in bookstores!

message 218: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I don't smell books either but I adore the smell of books inside a library, especially when it is an older library full with old books....

I do watch weird my boyfriend when he openes a new magazine and smells it!! But then again, he even does it with the food in his plate and so...
maybe that's why his nose is so over developed in smelling.

message 219: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, I do care about what I eat but why does my boyfriend have to do it when we prepare a simple pasta at home..... he takes the plate and goes near to eat to smell it!!!! I hate that!!!!:-)))

message 220: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments Petra, how interesting. I think your assessment of the quality of its binding must be accurate. You would think that with a best-selling author like Amy Tan, something like that wouldn't happen.

message 221: by Allison (new)

Allison i have so many quirks

- i cannot dog-ear a page. cannot. that's why bookmarks were invented.
- i must take the dust jacket off of a book. i hate when it gets ratty.
- i also dig through the whole pile to find a perfect book. i don't mind wear and tear caused by me, but never on a new book.
- i must peel the stickers off a book immeadiately. like, as soon as i get in the car.
- i refuse to buy movie poster covers of books.
- i have to have series books all in hardback.
- if there is a book that i love, and it comes out in special editions, or a new cover, even if i already have it, i have to buy the new edition (unless it's the movie edition)

when i read, i found myself wanted to remember passages, but i cannot fathom writing in a book. so, i bought the little 1 inch post its, and put a chunk of them in the cover. when i come across something i want to remember, i just post-it the page. then, when i'm done with the book, i go through, take out all the post-its, and write in my book journal my book review & any passages that i liked.

I might do that!
Thank you!!

message 224: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 218 comments I really hate when stickers won't home off without tearing the book. Why such mega glue???

message 225: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 218 comments re Oprah: Sometimes I wish I could just tell her not all books need to be about overcoming pain and adversity. Those things can make for some great books, but come on - some happy books can be fun too! LOL

message 226: by Eric (new)

Eric | 382 comments I cannot cannot switch bookmarks in the middle of a book. It doesn't matter what I'm using; it will be my bookmark for the whole book. Oh, and, as others have said, I, also, take the covers off of my hardcover books, so that the books will still look nice when I put the cover back on.

message 227: by Boogoalo (new)

Boogoalo That's funny about bookmark loyalty, Eric. i wish that I could use bookmarks. I end up using pens, pencils, used envelopes, my glasses...anything I can find. And sometimes I end up losing my glasses in one of the 5 books that I have going--and have to figure out what I read last!
