MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Oh I love those! The timeline isn't the written order. I think the first set was Arrows of the Queen but my two favorites are The Last Herald Mage and the Mage Winds. :-)

Matthew Brown (matthewjbrown) | 218 comments I think that voices of discord are amplified in the modern world, and voices of reason and calm are muted. Discord sells news stories. Discord gets you noticed. So, I think it's easy for all of us to think that it's the common mood, where actually most people would rather have calm, peaceful, friendly co-existence as much as possible.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I think I have Arrow of the Queen. Happy coincidence.

Bill (kernos) | 350 comments Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Look, to each his own and all that, but if you/we begin to refuse to buy books by anyone who "may" use their income to support a cause we disagree with we will quickly devolve into a group of people who only read books by people we agree with...."

I certainly agree with this, Mike. One does not grow if one only considers one point of view. This is a reason I will allow myself to watch Fox 'News' once a week or so. In fact it is a good practice to argue for a stance 180° from one's own POV or against your own. For a really hard one try arguing for the child abuser.

But, I wall also allow for some things that make one so uncomfortable that they cannot consider reading about it at this time. Each to his own, as you said.

Personally I think dudes and dudettes should give a damn, because celebrity allows one's opinions to be spread worldwide and paid attention to more than those of us commoners. It ain't fair, but there it is.

Besides, there are many ways to read a book without giving an author an income.

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments you make a good point kernos. but i guess i just choose to ignore celebrity opinions, and i'd love it if folks could follow my shining example! for example, why in the world anyone would even take the opinion of a person who makes their living from acting as an 'informed opinion' has always been so bizarre to me.

message 110: by Leland (new)

Leland (lelandhw) I've tried to read the work of Orson Scott Card since learning that he donates heavily to causes that undermine gay civil rights. I really have. I tried to separate the man from his work. I tried to ignore my own convictions in the area.

It felt bad.

I am more than willing to try to see another person's side of the story. I will listen to his/her opinion and I will try to respect that we all have a right to our own point of view. But I can't stomach the thought that even an infinitesimal amount of my money might be spent undermining my ability or the ability of another person to live and have the same rights as any other person.

I'm not going to seek out which authors/actors/musicians may or may not have an opinion that is in my opinion...hateful. But if I happen to know about it...as is in the case of Orson Scott Card and Mel Gibson...then I cannot feel good about supporting them as artists.

message 111: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments i do have to agree with that, and that's certainly where i'm coming from in regards to OSC. i have different feelings for authors than i do for other celebrities. i guess when i think of "celebrities" i think of actors, models, sports figures. i guess i hold authors to a different standard. i expect better of them!

although, saying all that, it is still hard for me to want to see a movie by mel gibson.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Don't say that out loud, Mark! Mel Gibson is always watching...

Lol, fair enough, Maggie. I simply didn't see a point in arguing a point that couldn't be won. No use beating my head against a wall.

Incidentally, why delete your original post? There was nothing untoward in it.

Maggie K | 730 comments I just figured if I didnt want to talk about that post, I shouldnt have brought it up in the first place is all. I was just trying to agree with you, but not looking for a rehash if that makes sense.
