R2 TEAM THREAD: Team #3 Triple Threat [SECOND PLACE]

I get to borrow 10 which includes the odd book or dvd for hubby, cause he didn't bother to get his own card. Librarians don't scare easy but then we scan our own books and only go see them if there is a problem or we want something.
I find I go through phazes like say spy books, mysteries, historical, sci-fi, contemp, and now pnr/ufs. So I have lots of alistair maclean, adam hall, mary stewart, evelyn anthony, piers anthony and over 200 star treks, and heaps more. Was never really into chick lit though and I can't see that changing. LOL.

Fanstasy Sci-Fi Shelf 18/5/11 ★★★★★
The 1st Mercedes Thompson book, and it is even better on re-reading. All the major players for the series are introduced seamlessly. No jarring and painful world building required.
Mercedes Thompson, half native american skinwalker coyote, german car mechanic and raised by the top werewolf pack is our heroine. She meets a young werewolf and discovers a mad plot of someone selling young werewolves for drug experimentation and things go downhill from there.
She contacts the local werewolf Alpha, Adam Hauptman and Bran, the Marrok, the top werewolf and the very next day, Mac the young werewolf is killed and left on her doorstep, Adam is nearly killed and his house half destroyed in the fight with a couple of unknown werewolves and Jesse, his human daughter is kidnapped.
It is up to Mercedes to save Adam, rescue Jesse and find out what is going on.
Just love this series, now I'll have to re-read the rest of the series, it was just so good.

Yeah, adults are allowed 14 and each child gets 6. I did consider getting my hubby a card just incase but he growled at me when I suggested it.. :)
I'm not a huge chick-lit lover, I did read quite a bit for awhile as it was all my library stocked and I had virtually no book buying budget while I was in college and saving for the wedding. It's amazing how your reading habits reflect your mood, or at least mine do! I also go through phases of what I like to read, I haven't strayed far from pnr/uf for more than a decade now - which is a scary thought all on it's own!
I'm glad you enjoyed your time with Mercy & Adam. I could do with an Alpha & Omega re-read! :)

It was pretty good, but the 5th in series. I did feel that I missed a few character intros, but I caught up pretty quick.
This was her alien series, and it was similar to her atlantis series, where there were people you didn't like. The back stories set up future books, and I am kind of afraid of them only because she made me not like the new characters.
I did this totally backwards, and so my summary is:
Bride - a vampire abandoned with no memories as a kid 80 years ago, tattooed with her name, thinks she's the only vampire out there. She meets an alien "Devyn"(who now lives on earth with tons of other types of aliens in "New Chicago) He knows he's gorgeous, and wants her. He thinks she wants him. She says he's an arrgant slut blah blah blah.
He helps her find out more about vampires etc. So many side stories and twist and turns to mention...
It was good. I would have started ant book 1 or 2, but I don't own them. It was better than a 3 stars, but not better than a 4. I rounded up for the benefit of the story being better had I read it in order and had more detailed background info. It really didn't matter though. It could be a stand alone.

I re-read A&O only a couple of months ago. Very, very good *sigh*
Glad you enjoyed the Alien Huntress world Amy, I've read a couple, also out of order and they were hit or miss for me, but I hadn't read your one. I'll keep an eye out and see how I go.

One of the other stories is a Psy-Changeling by Nalini Singh - Whisper of Sin.

I really need to buy that one - I'll check I don't have it already though. I have a pile of anthologies somewhere. I know there's at least 20 I've still to read. It always sounds a lot when you say it like that, just don't tell my Hubby - he thinks I've read them all! :)

My hubby knows I haven't read all mine. So that's why I get the "not more books".

Finished 5/20

This final installment of the Wicked Lovely series ties up all of the loose ends resulting in a satisfying ending for fans of the series. I don't want to give away too much for those who have not read the series, so I'll just say that the love quadrangle is resolved when Aislinn finally makes a choice. The book started off a little slow for me but the action really picked up about halfway through and never let down after that. I really enjoyed this series overall and look forward to reading more of Melissa Marr's books in the future. I picked up her first book for adults (Graveminder) at the library this week and I hope it's a good one too!

Just waiting on Sherri's review of The Iron Duke now for our stamp.
If Sixie Chicks don't finish their 2 books by tomorrow, we have a real chance of winning. It all comes down to which shelf is called and how quickly we can read our books.

Book Completed: May 20, 2011
Rating: ★★★★

The Iron Duke is an immensely entertaining read. The world building was fantastic an was by far my favorite aspect about the book. The Horde is this feared race that has oppressed England and infected portions of the population with nanobugs in order to control them by radio frequency. The Hoard is technologically advanced and they brought an amazing number of cool gizmos: airships, mechanical body parts and attachments, wind-up clockwork devices, etc. This world is absolutely amazing and I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the book which describes a lot of the environment.
The main female character Wilhelmina, or Mina to her friends and family, is a wonderful character. She is complicated, independent and humorous. She has a kind and caring nature that is often glimpsed behind the mask she wears in public. The supporting characters are interesting enough, but none captured my attention as much as Mina.
This leads to one of my issues with the book; the Iron duke himself, Rhys. I found his character confusing. At times he is an interesting and sensitive character but those moments are overshadowed by his arrogant and dominate behavior to “possess” and “control” everything, including Mina. At times I was uncomfortable with his actions towards Mina. I felt that the author didn’t give their relationship time to grow; instead I felt it was forced upon me and what drove Rhys’s actions were never explained.
Another issue I had with the book was the story development. The first half of the book is more urban fantasy, while the second have is more an explicit (erotic) romance. So the book felt disjointed and a bit confusing to me. The book is listed as a romance, but after reading what I would consider UF for a couple of hundred pages, I was a bit thrown and getting thrust into an erotic romance.
Overall this is a great book though. The world building, action scenes and (most of) the characters create an amazing world I would like to discover more of. I would have given this a 5 star rating if the Duke need to possess and dominate everything had been better explained and there were a bit less romance in it.

I'm heading ou to do some errands so I'll check back later to see if the shelf has been announced.

Steph that means we are up for our Fantasy Sci-Fi stamp!
Sherri, on one of the other threads, SnS I think, Steph said the shelf won't be announced till Sunday afternoon Japan time, so say about 14 hours from now. Just to make it fair for Sixie Chicks.

We've got a new game starting probably June. Steph will release more details when she's ready. In the meantime she's asking for category suggestions in the thread up near the top of the group.

I had a blast, picked up new books for the tbr and lost a couple I was wavering over, which is a good thing.
Hope to see you all for our next game and for the next Bingo round.

I haven't made it over there yet, so I'm just seeing they won from your post.
Good game, Ladies! Hope everyone had a good time playing and reading along with all of us! I know I did!

You now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'fantasy-scifi'.
[Your new BINGO card can be viewed on page 1]
Good Job!! :D
Even though the game is over, you guys still got your last stamp! :D Congrats on completing all your books for all the shelves! WTG, Triple Threat!

Good Game!

Thanks Sandra for being an awesome captain!!

I noticed Steph's categories for the next game and I'm curious...

The new game should be up soonish, the extra categories were a big help.
I'm sure you'll like it Michelle, if you have the time to play. Hope everythings going OK with the job, or that you find a better one :)

I accepted my redundancy package, now it's just waiting on final figures. I finish up on Saturday so it looks like I will have time for the next game :)
I won't be looking for anything else for a couple of months. I want to get my son settled into the Autism unit in August and my middle one starts nursery then too. Once we've got the new routine established I'll be job hunting again. Quite a scary thought!

Even though it was a recession back in the 90's I didn't seem to have any trouble getting a job. So if I could do it I'm sure you won't have any problem either.

My librarian curses when I go in especially if I have the kids. We quite often take out 32 books between us! If only they didn't limit our selection... :)
