Hello Everyone,

For the week of February 21st - February 27th, we are reading approximately the next 30 pages of Legacy of Ashes.

This thread will discuss the following chapters and pages:

Week Eight - February 21st - February 27th -> Chapters TWENTY-TWO, TWENTY-THREE, and TWENTY-FOUR p. 236 - 264
TWENTY-TWO - An Ominous Drift and TWENTY-THREE - More Courage Than Wisdom and TWENTY-FOUR - The Beginning of a Long Slide Downwards

Remember folks, these weekly non spoiler threads are just that - non spoiler. There are many other threads where "spoiler information" can be placed including the glossary and any of the other supplemental threads.

We will open up a thread for each week's reading. Please make sure to post in the particular thread dedicated to those specific chapters and page numbers to avoid spoilers. We will also open up supplemental threads as we have done for other spotlighted reads.

We kicked off this book on January 3rd. We look forward to your participation. Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other noted on line booksellers do have copies of the book and shipment can be expedited. The book can also be obtained easily at your local library, on iTunes for the ipad, etc. However, be careful, some audible formats are abridged and not unabridged.

There is still a little time remaining to obtain the book and get started. There is no rush and we are thrilled to have you join us. It is never too late to get started and/or to post.

Welcome,

~Bentley

Bryan Craig Reading the part about Kennedy's assassination and possible link the Soviets/Castro does make you think twice. So far no concrete evidence has emerged (and may never will) but you do wonder...hmmm....

message 6: by Alisa (new)

Alisa (mstaz) Bryan I agree. I frankly never considered the conspiracy allegations to be all that credible until I read these chapters. It made me stop and consider the possibility. I'm still not entirely sold, but it certainly suggests at the idea that it was plausible.

Mary Kristine | 142 comments Beginning from the time the French fled Vietnam and the CIA hired (enticed) hill tribesmen to watch the Ho Chi Minh Trail, it became apparent that the agency's priority was to avoid exposure. The costs in lives and money not as important as the secret paramilitary activities taking place under the cover of an undeclared war. More than half of the CIA's budget was spent in Southeast Asia during this period which included expense of it's own air bases and air force. Again the agency's free hand seems to have risen from non-discretionary funds and lack of accountability. "political lies and fake intelligence"

All good comments folks and some very scary chapters.

message 9: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Craig So true, Mary, the CIA was "in heaven" during the Vietnam War, esecially with McCone gone.

William Raborn was clearly a mistake. In those times you needed strong, effective leadership and Raborn was not it.
