I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who does this. My son fusses at me, but getting that last paragraph or so just helps me feel more settled about a book. Reminds me of the Friends episode where one of the girls found a book in the freezer and Joey explained that the book was too scary/intense for him so he put it there==later Rachel ended up putting Little Women in there for him b/c he was so concerned about Jo's little sister.

I remember that - it was The Shining wasn't it? Brilliant episode :)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 45 comments I have a compulsive page per hour/day count thing I do. I pick up a book and have to figure out how many pages I need to read per hour to finish by a certain time or how many pages per day by a certain day. Then I keep recalculating if I fall behind or surpass the number I've calcuted.

I was talking to a friend about that episode yesterday - she was talking about how upset she got reading Little Women.

Joey and Rachel swapped their favourite books - after Rachel found The Shining in the freezer. So she read that and Joey read Little Women (which ended up in the freezer too).

Ronda (thebookdragon) My other compulsive thing (other than reading the last paragraph or so of a book) is that I just have to read a series in order. If there's not a specific series order, I end up trying to read them in chronological order--just have to see how the character/writer grows--there's always some kind of reference to things that happened or people who were met previously.

Kitten (romantikitty69) | 2 comments I will get to about halfway through a book and flip to the last page to see how many pages I have left.

I also do this chapter by chapter when I'm reading before bed. When I finish a chapter, only at night, before I start the next one I look to see how long it is. If it's under 30 pages and I'm getting tired I will read it. If it's over 30 pages and I'm tired I won't because there is nothing worse than putting the book down in the middle of a chapter. I've only done that once or twice...but I got up in the middle of the night and finished the chapter because it was bugging me!

I totally have to find those Book Bungies. My 3 year old loves to pull my book mark out of my book. He thinks it's hilarious at the time then realizes he did something wrong and puts the bookmark back inside the front cover....Thank goodness for Goodreads and that I can keep track of what page I'm on!

Julia | 615 comments An e-reader question:

what happens when you fall asleep reading your Kindle/ nook/ whatever?

Does it stay on the last page you were reading?

I hate when I'm reading a long traditional hardback book in bed, fall asleep and drop it on my face. Too often I try to keep reading after I do this, because I've woken myself up...

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 81 comments I've never fallen asleep while reading my Kindle, but when you switch in on it opens at the last page you were reading.

I have a few book reading habits that i'm sure alot of others here have as well. I never dog ear my pages or write inside my books, I have to read to the end of the chapter before I put my book away and I never ever break the spines on my books. I also like to keep track of how many chapters I have left to read when I'm done reading for day. I'm sure I have a ton more but I can't think of them right now :)

Danielle | 7 comments Oh I feel better about myself after reading all the comments on this thread LOL. I tend t buy books now more than borrow from the library etc. as that way I can't ever loose track of books I've read. I hate people creasing the spines of my book and tend to run my finger down the back when reading in case I've got it open too far.

Dog-earing is also a NO NO, its like hurting a friend :( haha!

I also have this weird thing where whenever Im reading and have to stop, especially when its particularly tense or someone's in danger I feel like I have to get back to reading straighta way because in my head the characters are still stuck there, bleeding or dying or whatever.

Iv'e only ever fallen asleep reading one book and that was The Hobbit, I've now been told to read The Lord of the Rings before hand but I STILL feel guilty, after 5 years of avoiding it, for leaving those pages unturned.

For some reasons I tend to bite my nails when reading. It's like I need to do something with my hands *shrugs*

I've never followed a 100-page rule or anything before, hate to read the last page and whenever I buy a series I get my family/friends to hide the next books to the one I'm reading so Im not tempted to read the blurb by accident.

I can't honestly think of anything else right now :) May be back lol

Bettielee I wish I wouldn't waste time reading bad books. But I can't stop once I've started. If I do stop reading a book, I feel bad. Except for two: one was a HG Wells short that ended up not being a short story, but an essay. Bored me to death, the other was Lady Chatterly's lover. For an erotica, that thing was boring as hell. I'm getting better, in that I use the Amazon option of reading the first few chapters of a book before I buy it. Even so, I feel strangely attached to the books I've downloaded the first few chapters... like someday, I'm going to have to read them... I'm telling you, this is a problem!

Laurel A friend of mine told me he has a book superstition - if you lose the bookmark you have been using while reading a particular book, you'll dislike the ending and/or the book. So, if you want to like the book, never lose the bookmark!

I thought that was funny, but I haven't lost a bookmark since...

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) lol thats a great superstition about the bookmark!!

i have this thing about series, if its not in a series i dont want to read it!! cause you always have a book lined up to read next - while if your not reading a series you have to go hunting for more books to read.

also i nearly always finish a book even if im not really enjoying it, i just cant help myself - there have been only like 5 books i have put down cause they where either ex-streamly boring or really badly written!!

message 67: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (kevinhallock) | 36 comments I also try to always finish a book, no matter how bad it gets.

message 68: by Starling (new)

Starling | 153 comments I always read the last couple of pages in a book. I always have. I need to know the author is not cheating me, but I also need to know I'm not getting a cliff hanger. Everyone around me thinks I'm nuts. It is so good to know I'm not the only one.

I HATE cliff hangers. I think that every book in a series needs to come to some kind of conclusion by itself even if there is a continuing ARC that will take several books to fully develop.

And I've checked the copyright date of every book I've read since I discovered that the history book I'd been given in the 5th grade was published in 1908. It was actually 1951, but according to that book there has never been a WW I or WW II. And there had never been a president named Roosevelt. Not even Teddy Roosevelt. I learned early that if a book was really old, I needed to know that I was reading a "period piece."

I LOVE magnetic bookmarks when I'm reading paper books. I won't use any other kind.

I will NOT dog ear a book. And I will NOT write in one. I grew up with library books and you don't write in library books. I didn't highlight in college when I owned the books, and I hated buying books where someone else had highlighted. The highlights in Kindle books drove me crazy until I found out how to get rid of them.
