Morals and Ethics

Ethical Terms
Right and Wrong
o right = act conforming to ethical principles (doing)
o wrong = act you should not do
Good and Bad
o good = high moral quality in a human act (result)
o wrong = low moral quality
- A wrong act can bring about a good result, and a right act can bring about a bad one


Moral, Immoral, Amoral
- moral: a person acting according to the ethical norms of society
- immoral: a person not acting according to these norms
- amoral : having nothing to do with morality or ethical norms

Duties and Obligations
- moral community: the group to which you owe duties and obligations
- who belongs in this moral group?
o all humans? only those who have the same norms you do? animals?

Egoism and Altruism
- egoism: acting to benefit one’s self
- altruism: acting to benefit others
- by jumping in an icy river to save a drowning child, are you being altruistic? Or are you worried that if you don’t, the guilt will haunt you forever (egoistic)?

Right, Legal, Just
- law: codification and enforcement of moral behavior, including exceptions
- lying is ethical but not unlawful
- laws do not dictate morality
- Thoreau said it was morally right to disobey the government under certain circumstances

Supreme Beings and Morality
- is divinity needed to guarantee moral behavior? (systems of punishment and reward after death)
- hell is for the immoral, heaven is for the moral
- this excludes those who do not believe in a higher being – what makes them behave well?
- thus, there is a morality based on Humanist values – relations of society are taken into account without the Divine
METAETHICS
1) Moral Realism or Ethical Objectivism
- There exist a set of objective moral facts
- These moral facts exist independently of humans (Plato’s Forms)
- They are right/wrong everywhere/always
- moral realists, ethical objectivists

2) Anti-Realism or Subjectivism

- There exist moral values, not facts
- Actions can be right or wrong, but not everywhere
- Moral values are subjective, depending on the person or culture
- anti-realists, subjectivists
3) Scepticism/Nihilism
- There is no free will (thus no morality)
- Without free will, you cannot be held responsible for what you do
- We act accordingly to society
- determinists, nihilists, and scepticists

1. Divine Command Theory
- all matters of right and wrong have been decided by a Super Being (god(s) and deities)
- should-ing: following rules because one should

The Drawback
- not everyone is included as it is religion-based
- which Divine Theory includes everyone?

2. Moral Naturalism
- human nature and what is natural to do
- rightness vs goodness
- goodness: what BENEFITS (end purpose - utilitarian)
- rightness: RULES and REGULATIONS (method itself – deontology)
- A religious moral naturalist would look at how humans were created by a Supreme Being and find guidance
- A good Being = good humans = good actions
Non-Religious
- Hobbes thought humans are inherently evil and egoistic but the moral rules for survival are recognized by all humans
- Butler thought humans are inherently good
Natural Selection
- law of the jungle
- humans have undergone a moral evolution – those who do right will live longer
- natural selection = co-operation
- naturalism: moral facts exist and can be discovered by humans through observation or through reason


3. Ethical Intuitionism
- we feel moral facts not through reason, but through intuition
- moral compass that guides us – it’s in our nature to know right from wrong
- Thomas Moore argued against naturalism: he said the concept of goodness is more than just one thing (i.e., truthfulness)
- According to Moore, good can never be defined, leading to the open question argument
- Moore says that good is unnatural – you just know what good is naturally (following hunches)
Drawback
- Then why do different cultures have different intuitions about right/wrong?
- Shouldn’t all people see things the same way? They don’t!
- BUT his theory is correct on the subject of the indefinable good and intuition towards it

4. Ethical Subjectivism
Emotivism
- although there are no moral facts, there can be moral intuition
- David Hume says that all human actions are directed by reason (all that we do is thought out)
- argued against Hobbes, saying people often do unegoistic things
- moral judgements are the result of passion (emotion)
- morality is like love: it is deeply felt, but it is useless to examine these feelings in any detail
Relativism
- moral values do exist and are meaningful, but they are relative
- ethical judgements about right/wrong are matters of custom & habit, not natural truths
- explains why things which were once considered right are now wrong (i.e., slavery)
- there is more than one right answer and more than one morality
- individual relativism means each person creates their own values
- problem: hard for individuals to agree on anything
- cultural relativism means that people are bound to the values set by their culture
- thus individuals are judged based on the moral values of their group
- relativism accepts differences BUT denies that there can be a single set of morals and values

EASTERN PHILOSOPHY

- different from Western philosophy in 2 ways:
- religion is embedded and assumed
- it is the journey towards knowledge and wisdom that matters, not the result
- the main branches of philosophy are: Buddhism, Taosim, Confucianism, and Hinduism

Buddhism – East India
- based on the teachings of Siddartha Gautama or Buddha, ‘the awakened one’
- the unenlightened are trapped in a cycle of suffering and rebirth
- people suffer because they do not realize enlightenment is the most important thing
- Nirvana: the end of change and oneness with the universe
- accomplished through meditation and karmic acts (good deeds)

Confucianism

- principle guiding philosophy in China

- similarities with Plato (both wanted enlightened ruler who used philosophy to rule)

Taoism
- the ‘Way’ to unify oneself with ultimate reality
- not as readily achievable as Buddhism; a unique journey for each seeker
- naturalistic philosophy – steady acceptance of ultimate truths
- ^ idea called wu wei (without action) and is central


Hinduism
- both religious and philosophical
- asks: what is human nature? what is human consciousness capable of doing? how should human society function?
- enlightenment through self-discovery
- yoga: the goal of harmony

THE TROLLEY PROBLEM

- basic scenario, introduced by Philippa Foot: trolley is about to crash into a group of 5 workmen, but can be diverted onto another track if you pull a lever; however, the trolley will then crash into 1 innocent individual
- some will sacrifice 1 person in order to save 5, others see a difference between killing 1 individual by active intervention and letting several die by remaining passive
- Peter Ungar: a fundamental difference would be hard to make, even if killing 1 person seems more cruel and involved
- utilitarian: end result
- deontologist: process/duty
- this problem has to do with instinctive moral responses (moral intuitions)
- Jeremy Bentham: measure of the moral validity of any act is determined by the process which would have the least suffering/pain
- ‘relativism’ of the utilitarian position: it depends on the circumstance (sometimes it’s okay to kill the individual, sometimes not – what if the lone individual is a famous surgeon who saves lives)
- just exactly how utilitarian are you? What if a terrorist threatened to bomb a multitude of people if you didn’t hand over a certain individual? As a utilitarian, you could argue that it is morally right to not give over the individual, as this would encourage further terrorist attacks, but it is not the only moral reason why you shouldn’t hand over the individual
- would you torture a child in order to save a thousand lives? A million lives?
- Kant: ‘categorical imperatives’ – there are absolute rules
- example: one should always act in ways that one would want others to act (respect others)
- Kant says that to lie is absolutely wrong
- moral distinctions pull us in 2 different directions
- killing/letting die difference (active/passive)
- ‘principle of double effect’: we can’t be held responsible for effects of particular actions
- human sacrifice and nobility: what if the individual willingly sacrifices themselves?
- natural revulsion to horrific injustice to involuntary sacrifice
- two end results:
1) Respect of others: you cannot sacrifice another person unwillingly
2) However, as there is no way of consulting the victims to see what they would do, respecting them is irrelevant to the issue and one must be utilitarian in this case

ETHICS AND WAR

- war is a bad thing and must be avoided if possible
- however, there are situations where war is the lesser evil
- deliberately kills/injures people (fundamental wrong)
- ethics of war decide what is wrong/right (individuals + countries)
- leads to formal codes of war, drafting of soldiers, punishment for war crimes

Me: I hope to see THG this weekend. The more I see the trailers with Kravitz, the more it sinks in that the casting is actually pretty good. It took my perspective into a different direction and it wasn't bad, kinda more enriching than a stereotype.

For PJ, if the directors kept to the books and the young ages instead of trying to score on the teen action, trying to lure off HP, the movies might have continued. I do like some of the modern flairs that were added but I wasn't thrilled by the major character changes.

Also, talks are in for Donald Glover (that's Troy from Community) to play Spiderman in another remake of the movie, but he can't do it as too many people will be 'offended'.
