Char (CharmaineElaine) Wow I never knew all that about skin colour. That is so interesting, imagine if we had all ended up not being able to be together. It would be weird... but would make a good plot for a story. A parallel Earth were there are 7 sub-species of human that are deadly to each other if their DNA mixes (okay I've dramatised it a bit, but still, that would be good.)

Yeah but even if I didn't I'd listen in class to learn that Europe is a continent. The USA is just part of America. I think it's North America, but don't quote me on that. It's just ignorance on the American's part. It's like when George Bush went up to Charlotte Church and asked her where in America Wales was, it's just ignorance. I think the Americans need a better education system. =P

Bailey Bristol (baileybristol) | 2 comments Hi, ladies. When I read your posts about Americans it certainly saddens me. Our ridiculous "left" media are the ones giving you the impressions you have of Americans. As one of the huddled masses, I can tell you that the vast majority of us are intelligent, compassionate people who are so immensely embarrassed by the media and currently by our president. That will change! We're people who read voraciously and know our world very, very well. To judge us by a young, uneducated pop star seems cruel. I hope you will disregard what you read in newspapers and hear on television "news". It's a face of America that is their opinion, and has no place in the NEWS, but alas, there it is. Please give us a chance. You have nooooo idea how generous, compassionate and servant-hearted we are as a people.
Hugs from NEBRASKA....the very center of the USA.

I was brought up by a marine biologist, so I was brought up to observe evolution taking place. It means that I get into big arguments when people try to tell me we were all created by a Divine creator! Your potential plot sounds very good! Deffo something I'd read!

Yeah, the US is part of the North American continent. I think the official border between North and South America is somewhere in Mexico, but due to it's economic status, Mexico is usually lumped with the South American countries. I'd never heard about the classic from Bush! I know there was someone in either the US or Canada who introduce Robbie Coltrane as being from "Scotland, England". Lol, as a Scot, I bet he loved that!

message 104: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) @Bailey, I'm sorry no offence was meant, it's just that only the silliest things reach the UK and I'm not saying that every American is stupid (you aren't) but some of the people in the American media don't really help your cause. (We have people like that over here too. We just hide them better =P)

Wow. I'm a believer in the big bang theory myself. I don't want to offend religious people but God doesn't seem plausible to me. Thank you, it was a moment of genius. I might do a test chapter and a working title of Seven Deadly Sins (or something like that lol)

Aww... poor Mexico. Scotland, England. Lol. They have no idea how badly they must have insulted the Scots.

@Bailey, I get where you're coming from. Also no offence meant. You're unfortunate as a country that a lot of the people that we either read about or interact with here in Europe have a very limited view of the world, or very set cultural ideas that are no longer accepted in Europe. Living in Amsterdam, I'm used to tourists. The worst ones are the English, who come for legal weed, and the Americans who seem to think that the Netherlands is just a part of Germany (like when they talk to you in pseudo-German and expect you to understand). I don't agree with you about your current preisdent, by the way. From what I gather, Obama is not viewed in a particularly positive light within the US but he has done absolute wonders for the image of the country, and its international relations (honestly, Mrs I-can-see-Russia-from-my-house Palin who believes that humans lived with the dinosaurs 4,000 years ago), over here.

I'm not sure what to think of the big bang theory. It's one of those things that we'll never really know. But I certainly believe that we evolved from a common ancestor that we share with other primates. It annoys me so much when people claim we're not animals. Yes, we are. The only thing that sets us apart from other animals is our intelligence, and even there there are some other species that are intelligent. Chimps wage wars - with weapons! Prairie dogs talk in whistles. Dolphins have casual sex. Humans are animals.

I know exactly what you mean! There's nothing more insulting for a Scot than calling him English!! hehe.

I read an article today saying women buy half their weight in clothes each year...

...

...

:/

Don't think I buy that many clothes!

message 107: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I haven't really bought any clothes this year, except for a jacket. =/

message 108: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I've bought a jacket, a couple of pairs of jeans (postman trousers aren't good for uni classes :p) and socks (damn rats keep biting holes in my socks)... I suppose I've still got another 6 months to go but I don't think I'll come even close to half my weight in clothes!

I think it's an average... women with too much money and not enough to do with their time buy like 10x their weight while others who work, raise kids, etc., don't buy anywhere near as much and eventually it equals out... somehow... I'm not sure how exactly.

message 109: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Hmmm.... that makes sense. I was kind of worried about the weight of my clothes then... =P

They just released the cover for the fourth book of the Black Sun's Daughter. I think it's really pretty!

Killing Rites (The Black Sun's Daughter, #4) by M.L.N. Hanover

message 111: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) That's a pretty cover.

message 112: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
All of the covers for that series are very pretty. I think that this one is the best one so far, though. I really like the series, one of the only UF ones I bother with.

message 113: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Okay I just noticed that one of my favourite authors, Lilith Saintcrow gave Twilight 2 stars. That's so refresing on a site where normally authors rate eacj other 4 or 5. Also it makes me love her even more. XD

message 114: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Yey! Go Lilith Saintcrow! Though I doubt SMeyer gives a damn. Her fans might though. Did you see their reaction when Stephen King said SMeyer "can't write worth a darn"?

In other random news...

Some girl comes to my door collecting for a cancer charity. She wants me to purchase a calendar and they have two available, one with babies and one with cartoons. So I ask her to wait a sec and shout up to the bf in English to ask which one he wants...

I turn back to the girl and she says "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realise you were American."

"That's because I'm not."

Work handed in! I've got myself so worked up I'm shaking, rofl. Time to go drink copious amounts of alcohol and listen to the soothing voice of Stephen Fry!

message 120: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) It's been snowing since saturday night. The city is full of snow everywhere (duh), the roads are awful, it's freezing cold, and tomorrow I won't be able to take Victoria to nursery school :/ In addition, my whole body aches because I've taken the snow off my entrance/pavement three times, besides the fact that today I walked like four kilometres in the snow in order to get a book and chocolate from the duty free zone.
Ouch.

Just read an article in the paper where Obama is insisting that US debt is not like that of Greece and Portugal. Yeah, I know, it's worse.

Poor Jeshu. When we last had snow I was still working as a postman... I had to cycle in the snow (and some days this was impossible so I had to push the bike) and then walk to circa 450 houses over a period of 3 - 6 hours depending on how bad the snow was. My boots had a hole in the toe so the snow would seep in and I only had Sundays off so I had no time to go buy new ones. So I definitely feel your pain!

message 122: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) So I've been crocheting a blanket and I've been running into slight issues as every time I get it out the cat lies on it. I wouldn't mind but I want to finish it for winter as it gets really cold here.

Also the neighbours are painting their fence. Marvellous now it's not just pollen from their flowers but paint fumes as well. I think I may start constructing the bubble that my mum insists I should live in. =P

Char (CharmaineElaine) I got my brother's birthday card today. It has a Lamborghini on the cover, nothing says Char like a Lamborghini! XD

Just because you all absolutely have to know this... I got sunburnt last week and now the skin on my back is peeling. It's annoying me! At least I didn't get blisters again.

message 125: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) So glad I live in Wales, a land that doesn't know what the sun is... unless it's a trashy newspaper.

message 126: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
Oh no, I'm just milk white. If I go outside without protection on for so much as two seconds I go red. I take really good care of my skin in the sun but I failed to cover one strip of my back in sunscreen so it burnt. :( I don't sunbathe or anything. In fact, I stay out of the sun as much as I possibly can!

message 127: by Lara Ruark (new)

Lara Ruark this is a funny thread!

kay - i have a question and i want to hear some thoughts:

i read the queen betsy series and was loving it...up until book #9...then it lost all the magic and pretty much everything i had enjoyed about the series was ruined....

so now book #10 is out. and i'm not sure if i want to read it. i don't want to be disappointed again but on the other hand, i'd love it if the author revived what i enjoyed.

so: to read or not to read...that is the question!

message 128: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lara, it is the random thread, this is where we post random thoughts about (in my case) Lamborghini's and giant bubbles! XD

Hmmm, I've not heard of the series but I've been in the situation. I normally get someone else to buy me the book, so then if I'm disappointed I didn't buy it! XD

message 129: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I usually give a series two disappointing books before I give up on it. But it depends on whether you can face the possibility of being disappointed even more by something that had brought you so much joy.

Oh, I'm with you on that one, Jeshu! Mine was on a Tuesday this year and I had to go into uni for one class. Luckily I then got to go on to the English bookstore the next city over and pick a bunch of books that I didn't have to pay for! :D

message 142: by Char (new)

Okay so I thought I'd post a picture of my blanket. It's about half done now. I'm adding the grey. (Blue and grey are Bunny's colours. Practically everything he has is blue and grey.) I'm so proud... especially as I had to learn it backward. XD
