Hayley Stewart (haybop) I'm 25 so not jailbait :)

That Chateaubriand sounds like a teen emo to me ;P Just the sort of person you want as a brother :S

He was one of the romantics! That says it all. Though really he parodied the romantics but no one realised and took his work seriously.

message 453: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Oh dear, it really does say enough doesn't it!

Poor bloke, still wouldn't want to have to put up with him in my family ;P

I have to read that book before X-mas as well! I've read René by him as well (that was the parody). I hope he doesn't sound as pretentious in his memoires!

No, I definitely wouldn't either! Wouldn't want to be in his, either, as it was one of the French aristocratic families during the Revolution and he had to travel to the Americas just to make sure his head stayed attached to his shoulders, lol.

message 455: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Wow, have fun with that!
My sister's challenged herself to read all the classics listed on some book list or another - she hasn't enjoyed some of them but forced herself to go through them because they're classics and on a list that says they're 'must reads'. I couldn't do it personally, there are so many books out there that I want to read that reading those I don't takes up wasted time, for instance I have never finished Wuthering Heights - it didn't pull me in and by the second or third chapter I was annoyed by it, so have just never picked it up again.

Hmm, yeah, maybe avoid wanting to be in his family then, sounds bad for your health ;) Honestly what would Health and Safety officials have said about the French Revolution back then :O Guillotine's too sharp, could hurt or kill someone, the potential risk of someone somehow getting an infection from the unsanitised blood would be a danger too so no crowds thank you!

Left to my own devices, I'd avoid it like the plague! I don't really like memoires and autobiographies. I keep trying to read some of the classics, but most of them don't grab my attention in any way so it never gets very far. I'm like you - there's so much I DO want to read that I won't lose time reading things I'm not enjoying. (Unless they're required reading for school.)

Ooh, health and safety would have a field day! I mean, you're not even allowed to sit under trees now as things may fall from the branches and hit you. Definitely a problem with the blood spray and everyone being exposed to everyone else's germs! Go home, people, and eat some cake.

message 457: by Hayley (new)

Hayley Stewart (haybop) Ah yes, good old required reading - my little sister's in her last year at school and has to read a mahoosive book on Mao, she's a total bookworm but even she's not impressed ;) I occasionally got some good books but my mum used to look at them and then see what the people a few years above me were reading as well to try and get me to catch up (A Brave New World when I was 11/12... really?) I like Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist and some fun classics but any boring ones are just not for me.

Haha, think the H & S officials would've ended up without heads back then with the way they can go on! Executioner would've had to go on training for how to properly use the guillotine as well as how to carry the basket of heads the correct way wearing the proper protection ;D

Don't you just HATE how BIG BROTHER (gov) thinks we can't take care of ourselves? Like they had a recall of some strollers (carriages for babes) because children were getting their fingers pinched in some mechanism... tell the PARENTS to keep their kids fingers outta there! duhhhhh

Everything is labeled - hairdryer actually says do not immerse in water... another duhhhhh?
if you immerse while operating - you deserve SHOCK

McD's coffee now has to say VERY HOT on cup - duhhhh
If you get burned by hot coffee - YOUR FAULT!
you deserve the burns,

Come on people! Self responsibility.
sigh
Thank you for letting me rant.

I'm hardly jailbait, I'm legal! Have been for years... Also just want to point out that I actually find that a bit offensive (Having just looked up the meaning). Okay, more than a bit offensive. Especially considering the conversation you brought it up in.

He didn't sell his story, it was sold after he died as far as I know, but he wanted to write his memoires. I'll let you know if it's any good!

That's ok, use your youth to your advantage. I do it all the time! Arie has 6.5 years on me - he gets called a cradle robber for it, I get called a necrophiliac, lol. He makes fun of my youth? I call him grandpa and make fun of his old age. XD

That's because some fool DID win BIG BUCKS for burning (his/her)crotch when they spilled hot coffee on it. They sued, and won because there were "no warnings as to how hot the coffee was." Go figure......

message 470: by Hayley (new)

You are absolutely correct.....actually, they should send the lawyers and judges that try these cases to that school!! LOL

Oh yeah, I did a project on these a few years ago. Some of them are absolutely stupid.

One guy broke into this house while the owners were on holiday and managed to get himself stuck in their garage for two weeks. He had to eat dog food to survive. He sued them for psychological trauma and won! HE broke into THEIR house! What sort of world do we live in?!

Char (CharmaineElaine) "Hurricane Katia" has hit Colwyn Bay. I'm completely underwhelmed. It's sunny!!! How can it be sunny during a huricane? Jeesh... The weather is rubbish in Britain. It's literally sunshine and a bit of wind. We had worse wind last winter and that wasn't a hurricane! :P

It is. I told my mum that ths is what would happen. They've been bigging it up all week and everything. I'm so disappointed. :P

message 478: by Rea, Ghost (new)

I think your hurricane bypassed GB and hit us instead. We've had stupidly strong winds all day. They've knocked over all my plant pots, the bike, my solar lamps... and it's pushed over half of one side of our garden fence!! So now there's no fence between us and the neighbours - luckily it was not the bit with the jasmine climbing up it.

message 479: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Typical! I feel robbed. Give it back! xD Indeed that is lucky. That would have been a tragedy. :)

message 480: by Rea, Ghost (new)

You can have it! But I want my fence and my solar lights back! XD It would as it's really lovely when it's flowering and it's due to start flowering in a couple of months.

message 481: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) You can keep your fence and your solar lights! I just want my hurricane! XD I bet it is. Post a pic when it's flowering so I can enjoy it. :D I only admire flowers and that from afar. :P

message 482: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I want them back in working order! lol. I wish I could give you the wind! I will do. :) It should flower at some point between Nov and Jan. It was lovely last winter.

message 483: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I can't help you there. I do too. I genuinely feel let down at the lack of hurricane! I was expecting rain and wind and drama. Yay! Oooh! I bet it was. :)

message 484: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
We tied the fence back together but it's just broken again. That's how strong the wind is! It's trying hard to blow over our tree as well. Sounds like I got the drama, you got a nice day!!

message 485: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I know. That's typical. I'm feeling sorry for your fence though. Broken fences are no fun.

message 486: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I hope it's died down by tomorrow. Don't fancy multiple days with this wind. I know, poor fence. It needed replacing anyway, but now we're not going to have a fence between us and the neighbours until we get around to replacing it.

message 487: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I hope it has for you as well. It sounds horrific. We just had a fence replacement. As long as nobody comes wandering into your garden you should be fine. (view spoiler)

message 488: by Rea, Ghost (new)

Rea | 1992 comments Mod
I have to cycle to the bus stop as well, not fun to do in the wind! It is, the neighbour's just tried to fix the fence again - nailed it in place this time. I'm betting it'll be down again within the hour. We'll be fine. :) We'll just have no privacy! (view spoiler)

message 489: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) I bet it isn't. I don't wanna go out in the wind we have although I wanna take down my mum's wind chime. It's annoying! At least your neighbour thinks the fence is a good idea too! It probably won't stay upif it's wild. Yay! :) Oh no! Have a joint BBQ or something. :P (view spoiler)

We had no rain. It's been sunny actually! Just the wind has been (and still is) really strong. Our dustbin's been blown over 5 times today as well!

message 499: by Jeshu (new)

Jeshu (jeshusauria) Ok, I won't leave you, I'll stay with you... but I still feel embarrassed XD

message 500: by Char (new)

Char (CharmaineElaine) Lol, Yay! Don't be embarrassed we all make mistakes. xD

Also now that the "hurricane" has gone the weather is rubbish. It's well cloudy outside! That is typical.
