Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments No one is more of a gentleman or all around great guy than Mike. A guy who saved Sunny from bad situations when they were kids who steps up to the plate to help her now that she's in a mess trying to get away from a philandering husband.

I love Mike. He's one of my favorite heroes.

Michael Vorhis (mike_vorhis) | 15 comments Those names must be characters in your book Jean. Good for you. (I remember your use of the word "philandering" a few weeks ago.)

And for that trustworthy male character it sounds like you saw fit to choose a name which is historically synonymous with strength, honor, courage, chivalry and..uh...swashbucklingly dashing teeth.

:)

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments Why is it that I'm not surprised, MIKE, to hear you laud the name, Mike? Hmmmm. Wonder why? lol. Yes, I only write heroes that I love. All honorable but imperfect men. Men I would marry in a minute. If I don't like them, love them, how will anyone else? Smart, responsible, caring, protective, sexy men with a sense of humor, *sighs*. Love wonderful men...

Michael Vorhis (mike_vorhis) | 15 comments Well...for what it's worth, my primary male protagonist in ARCHANGEL is named Mick.

Now if the other main character had been named Jeanne, that would have been just plain spooky!

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments LOL! I never name my characters after real people and certainly never after myself. I could never live up to my heroines!! LOL. I love the name Mick. So strong and so close to Mike, a favorite of mine. In my six books my men are named: Mac, Danny, Sam, Peter, Jakob, Tunney (one I invented for the book after the famous fighter), Jim, Mike and now Gavin in my sequel to Sunny Days. I like strong male names.
Do they call you Michael or Mike?? Or maybe Mick? My Mike was called "Mickey" as a kid. Another favorite name!

Michael Vorhis (mike_vorhis) | 15 comments Informally Mike, for me. I once spent a year touring Down Under and amazingly nobody down there could pronounce the name Mike to save their lives. Left and right I was branded "Mick" until my return to northern climes, where I re-christened myself the name my parents had given me, and although I never personally related to it much, I remembered the nickname Mick for the day I could give it to someone who deserved it. :)

I agree it seems probably amateurish to name a character after (particularly) oneself. I chose it in this case for other reasons; it's coincidental that it somewhat resembles my own.

My mother's name was Jeanne.

I like the name Gavin. Similar to a name I use for a character in another work--a name we've heard but don't usually run into every day. If we want to make these page-people unique, we have to give them slightly memorable names. I have a friend who is writing a great piece, yet his protagonists have the most generic single-syllable names imaginable. Perfectly fine for real life, but I keep trying to get him to split the difference between typical and unique, if only so the reader remembers whodunnit page by page.

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments I find I relate to my characters through their names and if my character had my name, it would creep me out. All my characters are completely fictional. It's the way I relate to them best. With the exception of two supporting characters who were based on people I knew as a child.
Your mom and I share a name. It's a good name, not very common and easy to spell.
I think "Tunney" is my favorite character name. Though I admit to liking strong simple male names.

Debra Brown (debrabrown) | 78 comments I have enjoyed this discussion about names. I thought I would like to get many authors involved in the discussion and so have written a post on my blog asking authors to confess as to how they choose names for their characters and places. It was literally the biggest challenge I had in my first book! Please come post (and mention the names of your books while you are at it).

When I clicked on the FB link for the next part of the hop, I got a warning message. You might want to check that link.

Thanks for the invitation!

Aha! I figured out what's wrong. It's picking up the period after the .com. Took that out and the site came right up. :-)

Debra Brown (debrabrown) | 78 comments I am having a terrible time trying to figure out how to use the bookshelf function. I'd like to list the books I am reading, etc. and move one from the Read list to and Am Reading list (I read Read as Read, not Read) and things like that. But every time I click a button like Edit, it doesn't do what I mean it to do.

message 75: by Jean (new)

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments Sorry, Debra. You're way ahead of me here. Someone else will have to help you. I have no clue.

Try this:

Click on the "My Books" tab at the top of the Goodreads home page. That should take you to a series of columns that list: Cover, Title, Author, avg rating, rating, shelves, review, etc. You want the "shelves" column

In the "shelves" column should appear the current shelves your books are listed on and then the word [edit] in brackets

Click on [edit]. You'll get a pull down menu showing all your shelves and can then click on which shelves you want to move your books to.

Let me know if that works! (It does for me, anyway.)

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments It's a sensual romance, not a sweet romance. I hope that doesn't bother you.

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments Hi, all --

I have a new idea up on my blog and would love your feedback. I've started posting excerpts of my work-in-progress, my sequel to "Sunny Days, Moonlit Nights". I'm calling it Sneak Peek Saturday and it's up today. Would love if you could read it, it's short, and give me your feedback in a quick comment. I'm going to do this every Saturday. The book is not for sale yet, so this isn't promotion. Just want reader feedback. Thanks! My blog is: http://jeanjoachim.blogspot.com

Jean, If your book is sensual, not sweet, then I'm afraid it can't go on our group bookshelf. But if any of our group members would like to read and comment on your blog, they're certainly welcome to do so. I know not all our members limit themselves to sweet romances.

message 81: by Jean (new)

Jean (jeanjay) | 38 comments "Sunny Days, Moonlit Nights" is sweet and "April's Kiss in the Moonlight" is sweet. My Now and Forever series is sensual, republishing the first one of those in Sept and second in Nov.
I have a third sweet planned to start soon.
