Chapter 12
The next morning, Charlotte was kept busy between classes and updating her superiors about Lila's progress and mood. However, those peaches weighed on her mind. Charlotte bought several cans of peaches from the specialty store, but none of them tasted anywhere as good as what Lila's mother had given Lila.
Charlotte almost went down to the local farmstead market on the outskirts of Macon, but decided not to. At this moment, such a trip would assuredly kill her career if she did. Out of curiosity sake, she looked into transferring to Nashville. A waiting list existed for those who wanted to get out of Macon, and everyone on the list had more seniority. A transfer might take a year or more according to how long the others had waited.
Of course, putting in for a transfer during an assignment would raise concerns at the Security Ministry. Charlotte wanted to complete her assignment, but she also didn't want to draw the wrong sort of attention. Charlotte had been instructed to get Lila to take her back over to the hospice to speak with Susanne Newton, and as soon as she tracked Lila down, she would do her best. So she waited at the entrance, knowing Lila had so come by eventually.
"Lila!" Charlotte called.
"Charlotte, do you want to go to lunch together?" Lila asked.
"Yes, and I had hoped to tag along this afternoon," Charlotte said.
"Not until I talk to Susanne about it. She was quite put out by you, Charlotte," Lila said. "I'll ask her this afternoon, and maybe set it up for later this week."
"Okay, I understand," Charlotte said. "Come on, I'll buy you lunch. We'll try to find something with flavor."
And afterward, Charlotte would talk to Brad Colon. He would find a way to force Lila to take her.

Lila got off her bus to find Kris waiting for her.
"I thought I'd walk with you to the hospice, Ms. Howell," He said as he held out an arm.
Lila put her hand on his arm before pulling back, blushing. "Thank you. But first I need to text message my superior. I'll be just a minute."
