message 206: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (booksistershaz) | 1 comments I finished Lone Wolf a few months ago. The one JP book that i go back to time and time again is 19 Minutes. The one quote in the book that really touched and stayed with me is where Lacy says that all the qualities that make Peter stand out now as a child will make him a better Man. I read this book at a time my young son (6) was struggling to make friends in school and it had me in floods. I would recommend this book to everyone - parent or not.

message 218: by Kaz (new)

Kaz (imuzak12) Hi! I am reading Songs of the Humpback Whale. My first JP was My Sister's Keeper. I liked it and wanted to read all of her books. Yet, I haven't made good progress because I am a slow reader. Besides, there are too many interesting books! This year, I decided to read one JP a month to reduce my TBRs (although I haven't read any of hers in January). I hope I will succeed :)

Soooo jealous!! I am going next Saturday (3/16) up to the Chicago suburbs to a book signing so I am waiting to buy the book then. I do this every year and it just about kills me to wait. I want to get it and start reading the minute it comes out. Grrrr...

I also waited...went to her book-signing last Sunday, and let me tell you, it was worth the wait. I knew this was going to be about the Holocasut, but when I know I am seeing an author, I never read the book first. Her reading and presentation were riveting, fascinating, and her discussion about the research involved in this book were all very interesting. You will be glad you waited until after the event. I just started the book, and I know it is going to be great, intense, and emotional.

message 230: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 4 comments I've only recently discovered Jodi Picoult so have a way to go to catch up with you guys I'm sure. I've read 3 so far (Salem Falls, Nineteen Minutes, The Tenth Circle) and about to start The Pact. Please tell me I have lots more to look forward too?! I have enjoyed them all so far - Nineteen has definitely been the best and I can't wait to get started on more. Any more recommendations based on your favs after I finish The Pact??

message 231: by Sue (new)

Sue Seligman (bookfan55) | 25 comments I loved Handle with Care, My Sister's Keeper,Sing You Home, and House Rules. Now I am reading her current book, The Storyteller, which is about the Holocaust. I'm not that far in yet, but I think it may be very different from the others that I have read. Along with Nineteen Minutes, those have been my favorites, but there have been some that I haven't been crazy about. Happy reading!

message 232: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 36 comments Hi Lauren,
I've read most of Picoult's novels (16/20)and she's one of my favorite authors. What one you should read next probably depends on what "hot button" topic or issuse intriques you. Picoult seems to take newsworthy topics and dissect them into the peoples viewpoints and all the emotional issuses aligned with each stance. It's a mind-blowing, heart wrenching technique.
My favorites and what issue I think they deal with are listed below so you can make your choices from there...
My Sister's Keeper- Cloning siblings. Definite tear-jerker
Keeping Faith (Reality of Religion)Loved it!
Second Glance (Superior Race/Genetics and a bit of the paranormal)Alot ot other people do not call this their favorite, because of the ghost story but it appeals to me. Also I was unaware of how much bigotry existed in the US during the 1930's and 40'S toward anyone/everyone not WASP
Sing You Home (Gay Rights)-eye opening for me. I agree with the critism that Picoult took on alot of issuses too quickly here though. It easily could have made 2-3 books with the issuses involved.
Perfect Match (pedophilia)Hard reading and numerous twists

Lauren | 4 comments Ah thanks so much! Betsy your comment was extremely helpful and I'm so excited to read them. I can't believe I'd never heard of her until a few months ago and am so glad my friend recommended her!

Do you know of any other authors that are similar?

message 234: by Shina (new)

Shina | 11 comments I have read of few of JP books and she is by far one of my favorite authors. Her books really make you sit and think when you are done. The first book I read by JP was The 10th Circle. I have also read The Pact, Keeping Faith, Change of Heart and Second Glance. I just got 19 Minutes for my birthday and I look forward to reading that next.

message 235: by Betsy (new)

Betsy (mistymtladi) | 36 comments Hi Lauren,
There's a post on this site about authors who are similiar to Jodi's. I've also seen something called literature cloud on the web that will give you similiar authors when you type in the name of the author you like.. As for myself I'd reccommend Chris Boujahlian (stories about people on the fringe)and Sharyn McCrumb's Appalachaian Ballad mysteries. Thanks for asking me.

Dara | 145 comments Lauren wrote: "Ah thanks so much! Betsy your comment was extremely helpful and I'm so excited to read them. I can't believe I'd never heard of her until a few months ago and am so glad my friend recommended her! ..."

Kristin Hannah is somewhat similar and I discovered her when Jodi Picoult was asked at a book signing what authors she liked to read and the first one she said was Kristin Hannah. I have been hooked on her books too, ever since then!

message 237: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 4 comments Ooo thanks Dara I'll have to check her out and no doubt add to my ever-growing TBR list!!

Dara | 145 comments Lauren wrote: "Ooo thanks Dara I'll have to check her out and no doubt add to my ever-growing TBR list!!"

If you are going to read her books I would start with Firefly Lane. It was my first of her books and she is coming out with her first ever sequel in April and it is a sequel to Firefly Lane. Other favorites are her latest couple, Nightroad and Home Front.

message 239: by Sue (new)

Sue Seligman (bookfan55) | 25 comments Love those Hannah books so much...also check out Winter Garden...very different but just as engrossing and emotional. She is one of my favorite authors! Along with Jodi...

message 240: by Alexis (new)

Alexis | 41 comments I've read The Magic Hour and Night Road by Kristin Hannah. The Magic Hour is my favorite work of hers. I do have Firefly Lane and Home Front on my to read list.

message 242: by Ash (last edited Mar 23, 2013 06:34AM) (new)

Ash | 3 comments I am reading Lone Wolf and really enjoying it for the stories about the interaction w/the wolves. I am an animal lover. This book "saved" her for me. Someone gave me Handle With Care. I just finished reading that. I hated the character Charlotte, who seemed to be bloody ignorant & I wanted to yell at her most of the time. The person who gave me the book told me that most of Picoult's books had this tone, so I decided it would be the 1st & last. That book also had me crying a lot because I have been through caring for and losing someone who was like a child to me, watching them be sick, in pain, struggling, feeling helpless in the end...It was emotionally challenging to read that book. Then I was curious about her other work, so I went to the library and the wolf title interested me, so I am back in. I jumped to conclusions. Jodi is a good writer.

For me Jodi Picoult is hit or miss...when I love her books, she's the best, but some of her books left me cold. I didn't like Lone Wolf but I loved My Sister's Keeper, Handle with Care, Nineteen Minutes, and Sing You Home. I am enjoying The Storyteller immensely due to the Holocaust theme. I think you have to look at her books one by one because they are so different. She does deal with many, many current issues, and that is part of her appeal. I have put down some of her books, but read others more than once. She is a great writer, even if her books don't appeal to everyone.

message 244: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 7 comments Just finished the storyteller :)

message 245: by Alexis (new)

Alexis | 41 comments I haven't read that yet. Is it good?

message 246: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 7 comments omg so good.. i had taken a jodi break because i was tired of the court room ending and switch to historical fiction set during the holocaust. the storyteller is the best of both of my reading worlds...jodi meets the holocaust. it was a very interesting book. i literaly finished it this morning aroung 10:00 and havent stopped thinking about it
