message 52: by Keith (new)

Keith K (gyrhed) | 54 comments Well, if i had a spare it would be yours. Unfortunatly the party took what we had left. Of course when we get to the station maybe we could trade for some? ;)

Larry Glander | 1 comments Casting Call, just some thoughts.
Spinward Fringe would make a great television series.

Jonas/Jake - Karl Urban (Lord of the Rings, RED)
Ayan - Beau Garrett (Fantastic Four:Rise of the Silver Surfer) or Anya Monzikova (Iron Man 2, Rebeka)
Oz - Kevin Durand (Robin Hood, Wolverine)
Mihn - Collin Chou (Matrix Reloaded, Seraph) or Yun-Fat Chow
Jason - Eric Balfour
Laura - Lauren Lee Smith (Mutant X) or Jamie King(Bulletproof Monk)
Alice - Summer Glau
Frost - Bob Hoskins or Nick Frost
Stephanie - Darlena Tejero (Star Trek Flight Officer)
Ashley - Mila Kunis or Mena Suvari (w/black hair)
Finn - Clayton Watson (Matrix Revolutions, Kid)
Larry - Jamie Bell (Jumper, Griffin)
Doc Anderson - William Hurt
Liam Grady - Liam Neeson
Admiral Rice - Kate Mulgrew
Wheeler - Frederick Lehne (Firefly, Heart of Gold, Ranse Burgess)
Hampon - Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2)
Marshal - Clark Gregg (Iron Man 2, Agent Coulson)
Gloria/Eve - Mary-Louise Parker
Paula - Rebecca Pidgeon

Andrewb | 1 comments Ever since I started reading Spinward Fringe, I always pictured "Tomin" from "Stargate SG1" as Jake Valance.

"Tomin" was played by Tim Guinee:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0347375/

:)

message 56: by Keith (new)

Keith K (gyrhed) | 54 comments Have to update something here .... after reading the whole series again I think michael clarke duncan would have to play chief grady .... I just thought that his character fit better if he was a large man of african descent ... I mean a really imposing figure.... would offset Ayan where she is just so short and all.... just a thought

message 57: by Polaris (new)

Polaris Wulfman | 5 comments I can see most of the ideas people have given, but I think Allison Scagoiltti would fit well as Ashley.

message 58: by James (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments this is such a great topic. It got me going, and I spent the past few hours scanning thru IMDB looking for a british female no more than 5'4" to pull off Ayan. let me say, that's a challenge! :) which has lead to some funny coincedences as I continued reading. The best was this:
RL wrote: "Carey Mulligan would be a gift to play Ayan. There's actually a head shot of her in my reference folder for that character, even though my original mental image was close to Billie Piper."

now that's too funny, as I went right to Billie as an idea of a smallish british actress. And I also found Carey while searching IMDB, but decided she was too tall for a 5'2-3" Ayan :)

As to some thoughts I came up with, hopefully good ones, I will start with, while I love the idea of Nathan as Jake, I think all things considered he'd be too old (i'm staying away from the time machine:) ) by the time a show could start filming.

Ideas i've come up with, or liked from others:
Jonas/Jake: 6'+, 30's
John Barrowman (Captain Jack, Torchwood)
Colin Ferguson (Jack Carter, Eureka)
Joe Flanigan (SG:Atlantis) - Scheherizade's pic
Brendan Fehr (Michael/roswell) - Desi's pic that's an interesting choice

Ayan: <5'4", 30's, red/blond (finding a size match is the hard part)
Sienna Miller (Francesca, Cassanova with Heath Ledger)
Scarlett Johansson (could definitely see her in this role) - Allan's pic

Oz: 6'4"+, 30's (RL left this one wide open going from blond/blue eyed to african american)
Karl Urban (gotta say he definitely fits what's in my head) - Zimra's pic
Jason Mamoa (Ronin, SG Atlantis)
"THE ROCK" :) (aka Dwayne Johnson, the wrestler)

Minh: Vietnamese, short, good shape
John Cho - Scheherizade I'm figuring this person needs to pull off the one liners well

Ashley: young, dark hair/eyes, pale skin
Elyse Levesque (Chloe, SGU) dark hair, pale skin :) needs dark contacts
Jewel Staite (Kaylee, Firefly/Serenity) - Tim another good choice, gotta dye the hair

Stephanie Vega: latino, 5'5", gymnast, brown hair, short ponytail
Laura Parilla (RLs choice) excellent!

Wheeler :
Jason Issacs (Col Tavington, The Patriot) heck Col Tavington in exile could almost be Wheeler :)
James Callis (Baltar, BattleStar Galactica) he's lovable and hateable right? :)

Alice: 20ish, long brown/black hair, blue eyes (keep in mind she took the body of a killer)
Tabrett Bethell (Cara, Legend of the Seeker) Alice reminds me a lot of a Mord-Sith learning to be human again:)

Frost:
Mark Sheppard (Crowley, Supernatural)
Sean Patrick Flanery (Connor, Boondock Saints)

Finn:
Anton Yelchin (nice choice) - lance
Connor Weil (another nice choice) - lance

Laura : with nothing really to go on, just picked someone I'd like to see in a good role
Bridget Regan (Kahlan, Legend of the Seeker) she'd made a great Ayan, natural red head, but 5'9" :(

Jason :
Ed Quinn (Nathan Stark, Eureka) sneeky and brainy
Jonathan LaPaglia (i recall him from Seven Days, the time travel show)

Liam Grady: tall, robed, middle age
John Glover (Lionel Luther, Smallville)

Eve :
Summer Glau seriously, the look she had in the Sarah Connor Chronicles, nuf said :)

Fleet Dr Anderson: middle aged, graying
Hugh Laurie (who else should be the doc that makes Ayan II?)

Paula :
Lori Petty - matthew and lots of agreement

message 59: by Keith (new)

Keith K (gyrhed) | 54 comments Oooh ..... summer glau .... nice... I totally get that pic man!!!!

message 60: by James (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments Sylvie, some interesting choices there :) Marshall Marshall as Jason, nice pull, I hadn't thought of him at all. and Hugh as Hampon? hahahaha that had me rolling, wonder who would do the child version or do you just computer morph hugh into a 10 yr old :)

and Andrewb, that's a believable Jake pic as well. fits the idea of not being someone you immediately see as being in charge, much like my Colin Ferguson pic.

and polaris, very good choice. Allison is quite spunky, very nice pull :) she's great in WH13

gotta say, i think being a casting director would be crazy for this, there's soo many good choices while a few just gotta haves. Someone find RL a benefactor to bankroll the TV show! please!

message 61: by Barbariansteve (last edited Jun 06, 2011 04:26PM) (new)

Barbariansteve | 22 comments Natalie Dormer (Anne Boleyn in The Tudors) or Emily Rose (from SyFy's Stephen King-based Haven) as Ayan perhaps. Both have an uncommon beauty and one's even English. Bonus points for authenticity! I love the idea of Billie Piper as Ayan and the inimicable Hugh Laurie as Dr. Anderson though.

message 62: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 16 comments Haven't visited here in awhile, but after talking with Scheherizade, I thought about some possibilities:

I really love La Minion's choice for Finn. Just how I pictured him.

Stephen Lang, Ian McShane (I could see these two as Wheeler) and Mark Addy were mentioned for Frost. Here's my candidate: Dougray Scott. (Medic! I need oxygen... lots!) DS starred with Tim Olyphant in 'Hitman" ...(again,where's that OXYGEN?!) and TO can be whomever he wants to be. Also DS is married to Claire Forlani who was, to me, ethereally REALLY beautiful in 'Meet Joe Black". How about CF for Ayan? She might appear delicate, but I'm sure she could kick some a$$, as needed.

message 63: by Bluetansy (new)

Bluetansy | 11 comments I don't know...many of these choices you're all naming I'm having to Google because they are fairly young actors who I've seen but don't have the names associated with the faces.
I do think Jake Gyllenhaal would be a great Larry. And I very much agree with Marc Dacascos as Minh-Chu Buu.
However, I see Jonas/Jacob as someone with more character-lines (mileage) in his face than many I'm hearing suggested. This is great fun! I'm really going to have to give this some thought!

message 64: by Bluetansy (new)

Bluetansy | 11 comments This is kinda like telling a Tolkien zealot what YOU are sure a Hobbit looks like!

message 65: by James (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments that's funny Blue!

as to why many of us aren't going older with Jonas, he's stated to be early/mid 30's, and figure he's pretty much wasted a lot of time career wise going nowhere. So a worn look really doesn't fit. More a underachiever, or such.

Just had two ideas, though I can't think of how they would best play:

David James Elliot, who play Harm on JAG.
David Bourneau, Angel from Buffy and the FBI agent in Bones

message 66: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 16 comments Earlier I thought of George Eads from CSI as a possible Jonas/Jake candidate. Here's another: Ray Stevenson ("Titus Pullo" / ROME) I think he could rock the trenchcoat!

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0829032/

message 67: by Mike (new)

Mike (mike_p) | 3 comments You know what's weird, when I was reading Origins, I kept seeing Jamie Bamber (Lee "Apollo" Adama) as Jonas. When I was reading Resurrection, I saw Nathan Fillion as Jake.

message 68: by Richieb (new)

Richieb | 2 comments I always think of ash being of japanes heritage such as the lady who plays azumi or devon oaki

message 69: by Mike (new)

Mike (mike_p) | 3 comments This actress is how I picture Ashley.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm4014003/

message 70: by Polaris (new)

Polaris Wulfman | 5 comments I think Ashley should look a little younger than that. I also don't think she's Aisian, but maybe had a hint of Pacific Islander. Maybe like Jessica Andres, here:
http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5...

message 71: by James (last edited Oct 10, 2011 12:22PM) (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments Mike, Jamie Bamber, that's an interesting pull for Jonas. Hadn't thought of him. As for Nathan, everyone is pretty much agreed that if it were a perfect world, his Captain Reynolds style would suite Jonas/Jake perfectly. My only issue is, by the time RL is ready for a SF show, Nathan would be too old for the role. Had this come about right after the Firefly mess, that would have been perfect.

As to new ideas I've had on people to play the various roles, I'll also point out I like to consider actors/actresses who could viably play the roles in 5 years time.

So, I was watching Tron Legacy last week end, and Garrett Hedlund (the son) looks to me like a person that could potentially pull off both roles of Jonas/Jake. If it were to start today, I'd probably vote for Ben Brower of Farscape/SG1 fame.

As for Ayan, I had a shocker. I watched Thor a couple of nights ago, and as I watched, I couldn't help but feel that Natalie Portman looks and acts much the way I'd expect of Ayan. I could see her playing that role very easily.

I can't help now to watch every movie and tv show wondering is a person in the film/show could be good for a role in SF.

In the vane of "who from any time in film" could play roles, I though that Julie Andrews, or perhaps Venassa Redgrave, would have made exceptional Admiral Rice's.

message 72: by Boyardee (last edited Nov 23, 2011 07:43AM) (new)

Boyardee | 1 comments Only have a few that are not fluid when I am reading.

Jonas/Jake - Hugh Jackman Shaven/Unshaven
Ashley - Jessica Stroup
Ayan - Emily Browning
Alice - Dina Meyer
Liam - Liam Neeson in his jedi robes
Oz - Eric Bruskotter
Ming-Chu - Johnny Nguyen
Wheeler - Chef Scott Conant (no idea why)
Finn - DJ Qualls
Frost - Rhys Ifans
Hampon - Gary Sinise
Muenez - John Leguizamo

message 73: by Dan (last edited Jul 07, 2012 04:40PM) (new)

Dan (porshadoxus) | 4 comments I could see Micheal Weatherly playing Oz. He has a real 'second-in-command' style to him.
And Hugh Jackman would be great as Valent/Valance.

message 74: by Donald (new)

Donald Collins | 2 comments For some reason I keep thinking of Zooey Deschanel as Alice, but it didn't seem to fit after First Light

message 75: by Randolph (new)

Randolph Lalonde | 125 comments Mod
To be honest, I've seen a lot of Zooey Deschanel's work and I can say for certain that she doesn't have the range to play Alice, and certainly not Ashley (as someone local suggested once).

She's one of those Actresses that does 'her thing' exceptionally well, but I've never seen her step out of her box. Too bad too, she has a huge fan following.

message 76: by Adrian (new)

Adrian | 3 comments Whenever I'm reading Frost speaks with the voice of Kevin McNally (Gibbs, Pirates of the Caribbean) and Dr. Anderson with the voice of Robert Picardo (EMH, ST:Voyager).

message 77: by Donald (new)

Donald Collins | 2 comments I think Mark Alan Dacascos would make a good Ming-Chu, he has done a space fighter pilot role before. He is around the right age, but I've seen him play as comic-relief.

message 78: by Phil (new)

Phil (philkopitske) | 5 comments I can see Jerry O'Connell as Oz - the military jaw line, the twinkle in the eyes and subtle grin that I'd expect a first officer with phenomenal people skills to have in abundance...

message 79: by Jack (last edited Jul 24, 2012 04:01PM) (new)

Jack | 23 comments I see Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) as Jonas

srec=http://www.google.com/imgres?q=jensen...
This image, with him in the black trench coat, says it all.

message 80: by Adam (new)

Adam (adam_bryant) | 17 comments India Eisley as Alice
Was the only good thing in underworworld Awakaning.
Kate Beckinsale - Stephanie !
Theo James as finn!
Sandrine Holt - Ashly

message 81: by Caleb (new)

Caleb | 2 comments Wow, that is a good one Jack.

message 82: by AJ (new)

AJ | 3 comments There are some wonderful suggestions here, and I thought I would add the possibility of the following casting for Admiral Jessica Rice - Sigourney Weaver.

And can we just basically bring on all the actors from Firefly? Not just Nathan and Summer? I know they don't necessarily meet the visuals in all cases, but I think they fit right in.

message 83: by Dean (last edited Nov 30, 2012 02:49PM) (new)

Dean | 4 comments I know this thread is old and moldy, but I just found it and loved some of the ideas floated here.

I haven't seen one for Jonah/Jake that really fit my mental image of him. I'm thinking along the lines of Josh Brolin.
as Jonah http://www.imdb.com/rg/mediaindex/unk...
as Jake http://images.forbes.com/media/2009/0...

And Ayan? Christina Ricci ... oh yeah.
as Ayan_1 http://www.imdb.com/media/rm357057971...
as the curvier Ayan_2 http://www.imdb.com/media/rm390408294...

message 84: by Dean (new)

Dean | 4 comments I won't even try to improve on Liam Neeson as Liam Grady. That's just too good to monkey with.

I picture Oz as 6'6" Kevin Durand http://www.imdb.com/rg/mediaindex/unk...

I also see Stephanie as Gina Torres http://www.imdb.com/rg/mediaindex/unk...

message 85: by James (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments RL has mentioned Stephanie is likely of hispanic background, so likely more of a Selma Hayek or Eva Mendes type.

all i know is RL needs to get this going soon, I wanna see a show or movie or awesome SF game! I want MORE!

Alan Tudyk as Frost, hmm

Also, would love to see Paul Bettany in a role. just not sure which. in a role like Chaucer from a Knights Tale, where while not the main character, he's extremely important to their growth and understanding and development. Maybe Alice's ship AI?

message 86: by Randolph (new)

Randolph Lalonde | 125 comments Mod
"all i know is RL needs to get this going soon..."

Wouldn't it be wonderful if I had the money or power to "get it going soon".

Having said that, I know there are some fantastic producers reading my work right now, so there is always a possibility of something happening as long as people are reading the series and talking about it.

I have to say one more thing: Some of the casting choices are really interesting here, eye-opening even. Keep it coming, it's really interesting to see what you guys would do!

message 87: by Spencer (new)

Spencer Goodall | 1 comments I love the Idea that this Spare Opera could end up as a film, how about a regular show?

I would like to see one of the below pick up this up.

Joss Whedon - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0923736/
J. Michael Straczynski - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0833089/?r...

Hell I'd even like it if it were a Final Fantasy, Tron Uprising, Mass Effect CG Show / Movie with great voice actors.

As for cast, I think I would need a little more time but all the above are great.

message 88: by James (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments JMS teamed up with RL would be awesome. B5 was a fantastic show, and the intertwined story was fantastic, very similar to portions of SF

message 91: by The Pirate Ghost (new)

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) Wow, I'm old, hardly know any current actors/actresses by name but I'll take a stabe at it. (Kind of fun) ... I might add that, such a span of time is covered fromm the start to the end, that it may change the people I see in the role.

Jake/Jonas- Hugh Jackman (more Jake than Jonas)

Ayan (The first) - (I wish a young Nichole Kidman was avialible) Ruth Kearny

Ayan (The Second - post wormhole) Amy Adams

Wheeler- Johnny Depp

Oz- Eric Bana (at least in the First light era)

Jason- Tom Hiddlston

Laura- Saoirse Ronan

Stephanie- Rohna Mitra

Frost- Colin O'Donoghue (but he'd have to get a little rough arond the edges first).

Larry- Jason Stetham

Grady- Liam Nesson

Ashley - Maggie Q

Finn - Noah Wiley (yes, I know, maybe too old) or ...
Finn- Sean Maher

message 92: by James (new)

James (cord66) | 41 comments old or not this is still one of the threads to see how people view the characters differently. good ideas all around. shame some of the choices whom are perfect now wouldn't be in 5 years. hard for example for Nathan to be Jonas. and he'd need to drop some of pudge he's built up on Castle to play Jake

message 93: by Dan (new)

Dan (porshadoxus) | 4 comments I'd like to see Ashley Lamport played by Canadian recording artist Lights
