Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments Object of the Game: To have read off the most shelves from the official list below.

Start: February 1, 2011
*Any book that you finish after this date can be used for this challenge.
End: April 30, 2011

1. To have read a book off a shelf, you must read a book that is found on that particular shelf. ie. to have read book off the classics shelf, you must read a book that is found on "classics" shelf within the first page.
Here is how you find the page:
-Find the book you just read and click on it so you get to the orginal page. For example: Grapes of Wrath http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4395....
-After you get to this page, look all the way to the right hand side and find Popular Shelves, click on more shelves and you should get to this page: http://www.goodreads.com/book/shelves/43...
and cross off the shelves you 'touched' on the first page.

2. A single book may be found on several shelves however we will only count the first page of top shelves for this book. For example, you may find a book that has 148+ pages of shelves (such as Grapes of Wrath), but only count the first page.

3. You don’t have to read off the shelves in any particular order of shelves.

4. The name of shelves must MATCH EXACTLY to the shelf you are trying to count. No deviations are acceptable (check the spelling off the official list below). For example one shelf reads: 2008-books and another 2008-book or childrens or children-s.

5. It is permissible to read a book that is found on a shelf you've already counted. I may read 10 books that include the shelf "books-i-own". After you have found this shelf once, continue to check off the same shelf, but do not count it as an additonal shelf. At the end of the round, report the shelf you hit the most.

6. Reporting

All we want you to report on the thread is the number of books you've read and the number of shelves these books are found on. Do not report titles because that will give your competitors a strategic edge. I will be creating a another thread where people can post questions on where to find a shelf. So if someone is looking specifically for economics, they can ask other players where they found that shelf. Some of us would like to keep this a secret, as it may give the competitors who are trying to get the most shelves more of an advantage.

For example:
52 shelves
2 books

b. You must track the titles read and the shelves on your own. You can come up with your own method of tracking. I personally print the list and highlight the shelves I have hit, but someone out there may have made a excel spreadsheet, which can be requested by other players via email.

7.HOW DO I GET RID OF SHELVES I CAN'T TOUCH??
If you read a book with a certain amount of pages, you can cross off a shelf you are finding difficult to hit. If you cross off a shelf and later hit it, you cannot change your original shelf. You must choose another shelf to cross off.
* 400 pages - Mark off 1 extra shelf of your choice
* Over 500 pages - Mark off 2 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 600 pages - Mark off 3 extra shelves of your choice
* Over 700-1000 and over pages - Mark off 4 extra shelves of your choice
(Please include this in your reporting)
For example:
216 shelves
23 books
Book over 400 pages crossed off so and so shelf.

8.At the end of each month, the top three shelvers will be allowed to cross off 3 shelves. I will also randomly (names out of a hat) pick 3 people to cross off 2 shelves of their choice.

9.We will continue to celebrate GR authors, so if you read a book by a good reads author, you can eliminate one shelf.

9. Objective
The "winner" is one who has either read off all 350 shelves noted on the official list or who has read the most off these 350 shelves by the end date, January 31st.

*Also, please post the shelf you 'touched' the most at the end of the challenge.

This is still Angela' challenge, I'm just trying to keep it going til she's ready to take charge again. Hope it is smooth-ish sailing. - Adrienne

SandyC (sandyc88) | 173 comments Adrienne, thanks for your hard work on this! I have a spreadsheet if anyone needs it.

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments Oh! That was quick! Thanks, Liz!

message 7: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments In the interest of multiple posts:

Are we going to continue to cross of shelves for deleted shelves that were hit in the last challenge?

Rather than highest number of shelves hit, we could do something like most improved from one month to the next - or just do randoms.

I don't know about having the top shelver pick something for everyone to cross off - we all have different shelves that we might consider hard to get. Also - I'd be EXTREMELY frustrated if I were reading a book for a specific shelf and it was crossed off.

message 8: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments Yes, we are going to do the deleted shelves cross off.

I like the most improved idea. That would be easy to track. Also, we will keep doing random drawings.

You're right about the crossing off. That would be frustrating. Keep thinking.

message 9: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments Lets just do most improved & random. The usual people (ie me and Sandy) will get the shelves for the first month and then after that it will get spread out.

We get to cross off quite a bit for GR authors and for page numbers.

Maybe for the next round we could have the top few shelvers pick shelves for the challenge (do some criteria such as the shelf must have 2000 books on it). These could replace the bottom few on the top 350 list.

This sounds good to me, too.

message 13: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) dtbooks... That's going to be on my to-cross-off list! It looks like it's just 1 girl in Australia who has shelved like 4000 books as "dtbooks"... grrr...

dead tree books, I believe - you see it used a lot in ebook forums.

Lahni Since this is my second time around I want to make sure I understand: For each of the newly deleted shelves I hit last time I get a free cross- off?

Btw thanks to those who put it together and do the spreadsheets.

Yes, but only for shelves you actually hit, not ones you crossed off for GR authors or XL books. Unless of course, you actually did hit it with a book later.

I'll post it in the the reporting thread, too.

message 17: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments LOL. Sorry Dionisa.

We track the number of unique shelves each person has "touched" by reading the books. So the first month, the people with the most shelves read, would be the most improved, but the next month, someone lower down the list might have the chance of getting the "most improved" award. In the past, the people with the highest number of shelves touched have gotten to cross off another shelf for free, but it didn't seem fair since they were most likely going to win, anyway.

We also draw two random shelvers' names out of a hat and they get to cross of a shelf for free.

Hope that clears it all up for you.

message 18: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments And I spelled your name wrong, too.

Sorry Dionisia.

message 20: by Dionisia (new)

Dionisia (therabidreader) | 332 comments Ah crud I deleted my previous post! Thank you Adrienne for breaking it down for me. Slowly but surely it's all beginning to make sense. I'm really excited about this. I don't have much of a plan though. Is wingin' it a plan?

Don't feel too bad about the misspelling. You should here the colorful ways some people try to pronounce my name, tehehehe.

message 21: by Lahni (new)

Lahni Winging it is pretty much my plan too.

Arda (arda_nl) | 58 comments Thx for putting this together. I'm gonna try for the first time :) looking forward to it :)

I'll start by asking 2 questions, just to be sure I understand.
1) I read books in different languages. a lot of the time each book in a specific language is a different entry in goodreads. To see which selfs the book hits you use the one in the language you actually read the book, right?
2) I presume you have to look at the hit shelfs before you add it to shelfs yourself, right?

Lady Heather, I can answer question 2, by saying right. Check the shelves it's on before you add it to your own shelves.

Question 1, might have to be answered by other people who read in other languages. Um, anyone else wanna handle that one? If you don't get an answer in a bit, come back to me and I'll see what I can do.

message 25: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I always use the number of pages of the edition I read, except for when I listen to audiobooks—then I use the most "popular" edition.

And I usually add the books I read to my shelves before I check which shelves I've hit... Oops!

message 26: by Arda (new)

Arda (arda_nl) | 58 comments Sara ♥ wrote: "I always use the number of pages of the edition I read, except for when I listen to audiobooks—then I use the most "popular" edition."
Is this what other people do to? check which shelfs their books hits with the edition you've read? or do most people use the "popular" edition?

Sara ♥ wrote: "And I usually add the books I read to my shelves before I check which shelves I've hit... Oops! "
That would be interesting if you read a book that hits less than 1 page shelfs, then you could add it to all the shelfs that are hard to reach ;)

message 27: by Sandy (last edited Feb 05, 2011 05:36AM) (new)

Sandy | 202 comments LadyHeather wrote: "Is this what other people do to? check which shelfs their books hits with the edition you've read? or do most people use the "popular" edition? "

I'm not positive about this, but I think the shelves are the same no matter which edition you use. The page numbers are different, but I don't think the shelves are.

message 28: by Sandy (last edited Feb 05, 2011 05:44AM) (new)

Sandy | 202 comments I just looked at the shelves for a hardback, a paperback, a kindle and an audio version of the same book. I didn't compare every one of the shelves, but the shelf page looked the same each time, and the top and bottom entries on each of the 3 columns were the same.

So, I don't think it matters which edition you use to look at the shelves. The difference is in the page counts.

message 29: by Arda (last edited Feb 05, 2011 08:06AM) (new)

Oh ok thanks, so edition doesn't matter. but my original question actually was about which language edition you use. I would think I would have to use the edition (language) I actually read, but sometimes another languages is more popular (and on different shelfs). I don't think different languages work the same as different editions (paperback/audio/ebooks etc) do they?

edit: I just looked at the third Millenium trilogy book as an example, and there the other language books are actually noted as different editions. But for some other books this is not (yet) true. I think a goodreads librarian has to connect the 2 books to each other first... (does that sound right?)

sorry for the difficult questions :)

message 30: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments As far as I can tell as long as goodreads has the books as different editions of the same book (regardless of language) they will have the same shelves. The problems may arise if the books are not viewed as two editions of the same book, but as different books.

message 31: by Sara ♥ (last edited Feb 05, 2011 07:55PM) (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Books translated into different languages should be combined with the original book. If they aren't, you can let a GR librarian (like me) know and we can combine them for you.

And yes, the shelves ARE the same for all combined editions, thank goodness! I listen to wacky audio additions a lot...

message 32: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (thisoilfieldwife) | 134 comments Liz, can I get a copy of the spreadsheet, please? My email is sswank00@gmail.com. Thanks!!

As a newcomer and first timer to this here challenge, I must say it sounds like lots of fun and doesn't seem to be too hard once you understand it all. Didn't take too much to start to get the hang of it. :)

message 33: by Liz (new)

Liz (arcanepenguin) | 285 comments I should have sent out all the spread sheets that people have asked for. If I missed you let me know.
