Welcome to our official movie discussion folder! :)

This is where we will discuss the film pick of the month.

The format:

Frequency: Monthly
Theatre/DVD: Both, but mostly DVD
How we choose: Poll & member picks alternately
Discussion: Last weekend of the month

The line up (subject to change):

February - Davina, Film - TBA
March - Michelle, Film - TBA
April - Samantha, Film - TBA

If anyone else would like to join in please let us know!

Here are just a few guidelines for participating in the discussion:

1) Since we're still a small group with not many active members please state your intention to participate in the given month's discussion. This is just so discussion leaders are not left to talk to themselves at the end of each month. If less than 3 people sign on to watch the POM, then the discussion for the next month may be postponed until enough people sign on.

2) If you do commit to watching the film pick of the month, please keep your promise! Watch the film-- even if you don't like the genre-- and come back and discuss it at the end of the month. :)

3) Anyone can participate in the discussion provided you've seen the movie. Please do not participate in the discussion if you've only seen a trailer or a small portion of the film, and finally please do not spoil the film for others by making a comment before the discussion is officially launched by the discussion leader.

4) Anyone can volunteer to be a discussion leader even if you haven't signed on to watch the film of the current month. However, please don't abuse this privilege. Remember the main rule of this group: treat others like you want to be treated. Therefore, be supportive of your fellow discussion leaders. Don't just show up for your discussions only.

5) In order to keep the discussions lively and entertaining, please remember if you do volunteer to pick a film you have to come back and lead the discussion of that film on the last weekend of the month. Discussions will close on Sunday at midnight EST, therefore in order to get as much discussion time as possible I suggest starting on the Friday evening.

6) If for some reason a discussion leader can't make it, please let us know so that someone else can take over leading the discussion.

7) Only the film of the month should be talked about here. Please use the designated folders above to discuss all other films.

8) Here are some suggestions of topics which can be touched upon:

1) Did you think the acting was good? Why or why not?
2) What did you think of the story?
3) If you could reshoot/ recast the film what would you do differently and why?
4) If you know anything about the technicalities of film making (script, directing, editing, cinematography etc) comment on those too.
5) Did the film cause you to make any comparisons to real life? If so, what were those and why?

You can add or subtract from the list as you see fit. Just make sure you touch upon various aspects of the film to move the discussion along. Please don't be vague. Go into as much detail as you can.

That's it for now, but watch this space as its probably going to be updated regularly.

I'm excited to get started and see which POM we'll watch in February! :)

More guidelines:

9) Discussion leaders should not reveal their POM until the discussion of the previous month's film is concluded.

10) When making your film picks, try to choose films that facilitate discussion. Try to address the underlying themes of the film and how they resonate with real life. Challenge yourself and us by looking at the film from all possible angles.

11) Try watching the film with as little information as possible! Don't google or IMDB! The less you know the less biased you're likely to be in forming your opinions once you have seen the movie.

Samantha | 867 comments Question: Are you telling us to pick films that fall in certain themes? I know the whole person is to pick out films that stir up discussions but do they have to be certain themes? Maybe I misunderstood in the other thread.

No, pick any film, from any genre you fancy, but pick a film that will give us something to talk about. When I mentioned themes I didn't mean you have to pick a film dealing with a particular theme (for eg coming of age, racism, genocide etc), not if you don't want to. I meant what was, in your opinion, the underlying message of the movie? Was there an underlying message? Or was the movie just entertaining fluff?

Take the film I've chosen for example, I don't know what themes, if any, it will address. Hopefully during the course of the discussion we'll get different perspectives and come to a conclusion. Or not.
Am I making sense?
