Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Woo hoo! First day! I hope I don't spend the whole time just talking to myself... but if I do oh well! pfft

I am Joanna and I am a Sherlock Holmes nut. I am in my 20s, and I live in Southern California.

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments Hi, I'm Sammy, and I LOVE Sherlock Holmes!!! I started reading the stories a little more than a year ago, and now I'm OBSESSED with it. I've read most of the stories, but I still need to read The Hound of the Baskervilles, and I'm currently reading The Valley of Fear.

And I LOVE the new BBC show Sherlock, too!

AHHH! You have a Tardis picture avatar thingie! I also got into Sherlock Holmes pretty recently, after the 2009 movie came out.

message 4: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (ireneadler) | 27 comments Yeah, the first time I saw that movie, I hadn't read any of the books, and it was good, but not great. Then I read a few of the books and when I saw it the second time, I realized how amazing it was because I reconized a bunch of quotes and little bits that were in the book :)

Oh, I wish I saw "The Great Mouse Detective" when I was younger! I just saw it for the first time a few months ago. I can just imagine myself obsessed with Holmes as a kid.

Hello Jackson! I am obsessed too. Every thought is of Sherlock Holmes. My friends think I'm crazy.

what I just wrote is kinda scary. sorry :(

what was the psychology paper about?

message 9: by Jackson (last edited Jul 28, 2011 10:31AM) (new)

Jackson Bond (jacksonkeith) | 15 comments my every thought is holmes as well. its getting pretty bad actually. all of my friends roll their eyes when my phone rings and its music from the movie lol. well we had to pick a person from literary fiction and study them as if they were a patient. i had a field day with it since i was already a holmes fanatic. the best part about it was my professor says..."this sounds to much like you..." i dont think she meant it as a compliment, but it was the best thing anyone had ever told me haha

message 10: by Joanna (last edited Jul 28, 2011 11:00AM) (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments haha, that sounds awesome. Being like sherlock holmes is a compliment if I've ever heard one. My phone rings with the theme from the current BBC series. If I get a text it's benedict cumberbatch saying "text". I get teased endlessly for that one. I work in a library, and I was able to put up a sherlock holmes display. All my coworkers were like, "wow. where did you get all that stuff?" It was the best display ever. I would sit at my librarian desk and look at people looking at it. and then they would come over and ask me about Sherlock Holmes books. yesh. all going according to plan.

message 11: by Jackson (new)

Jackson Bond (jacksonkeith) | 15 comments how awesome! i work part time at a bookshop and when its slow i sit and read sherlock...and people are always asking what im reading. which means i get to tell them all about how awesome holmes is. that bbc series is the best btw. its nice to know that there are other people out there with the same obsession...or PASSION rather for sherlock

message 12: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandastock) Hi everyone! I've been interested in Sherlock Holmes and the surrounding body of fiction for years now, but am only just now going back and reading all of the Conan-Doyle canon. I'm currently sitting at 3 novels and 2 short story collections finished. It is great stuff and I am absolutely enjoying myself.

I also can't wait for the second season of BBC's Sherlock :D

Steve Boothe (Smoothe_1) | 28 comments Hi everybody. My name is Steve and I've been a Holmes fan since discovering the stories in my youth. I'm now 42 and rediscovering Holmes: I've begun reading the Complete collection through a purchase for my Kindle iPhone app. My oldest daughter devours books and I hope to turn her on to these classics someday soon.

message 15: by Shaina (new)

Shaina (nairobinicole) | 4 comments Hello to all. I'm Shaina and I currently live in England and that has made me fall in love with Sherlock all over again. I read all the stories when I was younger so I am having a fantastic time rediscovering Conan Doyle. I also had a chance to watch the old series when I was living in Korea. Glad to find more lovers here!

message 16: by Kat (new)

Kat Clark (alittlebitgoth) Hi I'm Kat and I'm a Sherlock Holmes addict :) I live in the UK just outside London and started reading them a few years ago. They're one of the few books that I read deliberately slowly so I don't run out of stories too quickly.

message 17: by C.O. (new)

C.O. Bonham (dolphin18cb) | 54 comments Hello Shaina and Kat,

Glad to meet you (though secretly envious that you two live in England.)

Kat I too take my time Reading Sherlock. I finally bought a Complete Collection and leave it continually on my Currently-Reading shelf.

message 18: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Hello Steve and Shaina and Kat! I also am so jealous of the people who are living in England. I've spent months there but that was before I got into Sherlock so I never did anything Sherlockian. :(

message 19: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Hello Bosie! I am so jealous of people who got into it as a kid. I just got into a year ago!

message 20: by Fla Fla (last edited Aug 22, 2011 12:00PM) (new)

Fla Fla (flafla) | 5 comments Hallo! I'm Flavia.
I came across Sherlock Holmes' world when I was a child, we had 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' as a lecture and I loved every second of it, to be honest at the time, I sided with the Hound, even now I have a weakness for it.
Then I got back into the Sherlock Holmes world, one year ago, devouring the books all over and seeing the, in the proper light they were meant.
Now, I'm so obsessed my home and life seem to be a shrine for all Holmesian things. And I have to admit, I do so love applying his methods...not that it always works, but when it does, I think I literally glow with glee.

message 21: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 08, 2011 07:51AM) (new)

Hello everyone. My name is Charlie', I'm 19 years old and I'm from Portugal.

I became acquainted with Sherlock Holmes when I was about twelve, since my mum's got almost every SACD book and as some of the younger members, I have also watched "The Great Mouse Detective" as a child. The first Holmes adventure I read was "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and that's still my favourite! Since then, I think I have read the entire adventures except for "A Study In Scarlet". I am loving the BBC series and can't wait for the new episodes!

What else can I say? I'm addicted to english literature classics such as Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, et cetera and, of course, I also love Agatha Christie's novels. I am currently studying Archaeology at the University of Lisbon and would love to go for a major on English Studies when I'm done.

Cheers.

message 23: by Joanna (new)

Joanna (foxwrapped) | 353 comments Hello Flavia, Charlie and Michael!

Flavia: My house also looks like a Holmesian Shrine. I am an entire wall taken up with drawings of Holmes that drawn. I would consider it embarassing except for the fact that I love it in every single way.

Charlie: When I was a kid I wanted so badly to be an archaeologist! Then I discovered that maybe I just had a crush on Indiana Jones.

Michael: 1963? So jealous! What do you do at Mensa's Holmesian Studies scion?

message 24: by Reema (new)

Reema (reemarose) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Reema and a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, in many genres (television/movies/books). Came to the love later in my life through the Jeremy Brett series on BBC. :)

message 25: by Michael Halm (new)

Michael Halm | 4 comments My first experience was in books and then Rathbone (especially "Hound"). Now that I have experienced the smart phone myself I can understand "Sherlock" better, but I miss the Victorian era. I didn't think I'd like "Mrs. Sherlock Holmes" (Mary Russell), but some I did -- she's no Watson though.

Euijin Jung | 1 comments Wow! I am Euijin Jung, a fan of Sherlock Holmes since i was kid.

message 27: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (kheleyr) Hi, my name is Alexis. I discovered Sherlock Holmes during one of the many summer reading programs I did as a kid at my local library. I am a huge fan of Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson as well as of The Doctor (yay for the Tardis pic).

Joanna, I am also in my twenties and just moved from NorCal to CO. Hoping to get back to Cal in the near future! Thanks for putting the group together :)

J. Rubino (jrubino) | 307 comments Just signed up. I'm also on the Yahoo group. Have been reading Holmes forever, wrote one volume of paraliterature that was published by a small Canadian press, and have one "in the drawer". Since I'm in the US, you are expected to go the official route, i.e., through the Doyle estate, since the character and the last 1/3 of the stories are not yet in public domain.
Also a Jane Austen reader - launched our web site with a 3 part blog - "Did Sherlock Holmes Read Jane Austen".
Favorite Holmes film? I sort of like "Murder By Decree"
Favorite traditional Holmes - Jeremy Brett
Favorite young Holmes - James d'Arcy

So many people have joined since I was last here. Welcome!

Alexis, my best friend friend and my boyfriend are obsessed with Doctor Who. We have parties where we watch entire seasons of the fourth doctor's adventures (and the current one, but they have soft spot for classic who). we went to a Doctor Who convention a couple of years ago, too. ha!

Silvio111 | 123 comments Hello, my name is Silvio. I'm on the East Coast in Baltimore. My librarian told me about this site! (It's great!) I have been a Sherlock nut since the 5th grade (we're talking the '60s) when the nuns distributed out weekly student newsletter, The Sacred Heart Journal, and it had a Sherlock story--The Speckled Band (my first Sherlock story!!)
I always loved the Basil Rathbone movies. I also liked the Jeremy Brett ones (which many younger people prefer). Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock was okay, but the one I really love is the latest Masterpiece Mystery! series with Benedict Cumberbatch. And of course, all the original books. Nice to be here, thanks!

message 31: by David (new)

David Elkin | 63 comments Guten Tag-my name is Dave, live in the SW US, and have been reading Holmes since the late 60's. I too like Brett, I enjoyed Downey's first Holmes movie, and love the BBC modern day Sherlock.

I have read all the original stories, plus a number of pastiches. my first being the 7% solution. I look forward to reading the House of Silk and the new novel by William Meikle. Glad to be here.

Coyote (vampire-bottom) Hi, I'm Gus. :D I'm 21 and living stateside.
I decided I needed some groups in my goodreads life and was very pleased to find this as one of the featured groups. I grew up with the ACD canon and the Great Mouse Detective, and now I'm completely invested in the BBC series. I haven't read many of the parodies or fan-adapted Sherlocks, so I'm very excited to be exposed to those works through this group.

Bee (BacchusVines) (bacchusvines) Hello there, and Good evening. My name is Shawna and I'm living on the East Coast. I join the group in hopes of making friends that love the Sherlock novels, as well as getting recommendations into other series alike~ I got introduce to Sherlock Holmes when I was reading another mystery series. I started off with a parody series (called The Boy Sherlock Holmes Case Files by Shane Peacock), and wanted to read the real thing. So, I'm happy to meet you all :>

message 36: by Chris (new)

Chris (cbrunner11) | 33 comments Hi, I'm Chris and I am new to the group. I am the product of two devoted Holmes fans so I grew up with the cannon and merchandise. I even met Jeremy Brett as a child when he was in St Louis for a PBS event. I have become a more avid fan in the past year and I look forward to chatting with fellow fans of the amazing work in the Sherlock Holmes cannon.

Megan (mrensel) | 6 comments Hi there I've been a part of the group for a few weeks now but I never introduced myself. My name is Megan and I'm from the Michigan. I'm 20 years old and a HUGE Sherlock Holmes fan. I don't really know when I started liking Holmes exactly I loved all the mystery shows when I was little and well I still do. I think it was in 6th grade I read my first Holmes story but it wasn't until a few years back that I guess I have become kinda obsessed. It still pains me how close I was to 221B Baker Street when I was in London but didn't get to go. I love the classic Holmes stories and shows and especially the Sherlock on BBC. Can't wait to chat about Holmes with everyone :)

Heather (yourestardust) | 6 comments Hello everyone! I'm Heather, I'm 32, I live in Kansas, USA. Although I've used Goodreads to keep track of books I've read, am reading, and want to read and I've "joined" other groups I have never actually talked in any of them.
My SH addiction is quite new, having only started reading the stories a couple of months ago. I have finished The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and am currently reading my way through the Complete Sherlock Holmes. I have not tried any NON-ACD SH however.
I have enjoyed both of the RDJ movies. And am OBSESSED with the BBC Sherlock. I LOVE IT. So although I am a newbie, I am die-hard.
Looking forward to meeting others and talking about this wonderful new area in my life.

It's sorta like... if Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle collaborated to write an adventure starring an Edwardian bisexual James Bond. And Mark Gatiss wrote it! So you might like it. Might fill the void left by having to wait more than a year for the next season of Sherlock...

Heather (yourestardust) | 6 comments This sounds really fun and I'll have to add to my list. But as it is, I am actually really new to the world of SH, and am just for the first time reading all of the ACD books, so I have a little ways to go. I am also reading Agatha Christie for the first time, I read my first Poirot book and am currently reading (when I can tear myself away from SH) my first Miss Marple book. But I most definitely prefer SH!!

Silvio111 | 123 comments Heather,

Wow! How I would love to have Holmes, Poirot, and Miss Marple still to discover! What a happy year you must be having!!!

After you get done with all of that, you might add the author Dorothy L. Sayers to your list--her mysteries about her sleuth, Lord Peter Wimsey (and later his lady friend, Harriet Vane) are right up there at the top of my list.

This is such a great group of people here at Goodreads.
