Katie | 43 comments i need a name for an olderish middle aged uncle/guardian guy in my story.

message 759: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments Elizabeth sounds great. Thannks.

Katie, I recommend something serious sounding, oh, like Gerald or Arthur?

message 760: by Yulia (new)

Yulia (yuliasel) | 15 comments Hey! I kinda need some weird or another - dimension names. Do you know any? If you do, please tell me!

message 761: by Audrey (last edited Feb 20, 2012 12:59PM) (new)

Audrey (audreyjb) Hi people: I just have a tip about names in general. I never have any trouble with names. Why, you may ask? Because I bought a baby name book from the store, I promptly answer. It was like $5 on clearance and it has the meaning next to each name. I like to open it and see what name I land on. So if you ever see one on clearance (or not), get it. I haven't regretted my purchase once.

Meaning is VERY important to me. For example, I'm currently writing a story about a girl who is kind of forced to be one way and so she starts to kind of give her life a makeover. Her name means "The one that follows the right path." (Irony!)

I would help everyone with their names, wielding my awesome name book, but it's packed cuz we just moved -.-

message 762: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments That's great. I don't really like buying baby name books, it feels like I'm swimming in a sea of trash trying to find gold. I usually name a character after someone.

ohohoho that's a really good idea. you have inspired me.

Francis? Theodore? James? Michael?

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments And I need help regarding last names

So I have a character named Charlene. She's going to be from Johannesburg. I've heard that South Africa is somewhat globalized (like mostly everywhere nowadays) but how Anglicized are the first names? Should I change it? Or maybe it's fine. If Charlene's fine, then I'm still stuck with the last names, I have absolutely no knowledge on South African last names, and Google is not being very reliable per se.

Well, parents nowadays might not necessarily pay attention to the meaning/ethnicity of names, so the first name doesn't need to matter. For example, I know quite a lot of Marys, but "Mary" means "sea of bitterness." I would not name my child a name that means something like that, even if it is a common name.

For the last name: I had a boy in my class who was South African. I'm quite sure that his ethnicity was South African, not just his accent (because he did have one), and his last name was "Tanton." Not totally sure if this is a South African name but maybe it is...

message 767: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments I find South African accents epic since watching District 9.

Tanton. Hmm...

message 768: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Ooh, my old principal was from South Africa and he had an awesometastic accent.

message 769: by Jo (last edited Feb 21, 2012 06:34PM) (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments Lucky. The only place I've heard authentic South African accents is TV. Sharlto Copley is epic.

message 770: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
I do not know who that is, but cool!

message 771: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments That's the guy from both District 9 and The A-Team.

But I'm still defeated on the subject of South African names.

message 773: by Jo (new)

Jo (Penname8) | 1574 comments My main doubt was surnames, but I still needed first names! Thanks.

message 774: by [deleted user] (new)

I always end up naming people words in different languages heh heh.
The protag for my newest story is named Samedi, which means Saturday in French. No reason really, I just love the way it sounds.

message 775: by Abby (new)

Abby (abbytails) | 46 comments that's really cool!

message 776: by punkasaur (new)

punkasaur I need a name T_T

It's for a girl who has good intentions, but when she tries to do something, she ends up messing the situation--especially when it comes to people her age, since she's mature compared to the other people in her school. The girl is an introvert, as she'd rather watch videos online than communicating with her friends. Speaking of friends, she doesn't have much of them--only around four, due to an incident involving cheating. She's not shy, but it takes time for her to warm up to someone.

In case this is essential--she has some sort of power. Whenever the girl falls asleep, she can do some unknown form of lucid dreaming. Basically, she can put a memory--say, the Civil War--and add or remove certain things that happened before the incident came, hence seeing what would've happened if ____ (insert random event) happened. However, nothing seems to be changed when it happens.

So . . . yeah. x_x Sorry for ranting! -_-'

message 777: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmmm . . . how about Maureen? Or Rose?

message 783: by RedPath (last edited Mar 16, 2012 09:38PM) (new)

RedPath | 853 comments Er, here are my suggestions. Some for obvious reasons, and some for...no reason at all. Except that they sound cool.

*cough* Let's get on, shall we?

Hester (star)
Jocelin (little goth)
Sybil (prophetess)
Tallis (forehead)
Juniper (jumiper berry)
Liv (cover, shield, life)
Danica (morning star)
Kendra (water baby, magical)
Aislinn (vision, dream)

What sound or feel do you want her name to have?

message 784: by punkasaur (new)

punkasaur Wow . . . never thought I'd get a lot of suggestions. o_o Thanks a lot! :D

Oh, I do like the sound of Tria, Liv and Aislinn! I'll just try to actually write it before deciding on anything else. xD

Question. If someone's name was Lyndsay and her nickname was Lyn(n) would you spell it Lyn or Lynn?

Lav [lately I've been feeling] wrote: "Question. If someone's name was Lyndsay and her nickname was Lyn(n) would you spell it Lyn or Lynn?"

I think you would spell it however you want. It wouldn't really matter; its pronounced the same.

message 787: by Elliott (new)

Elliott | 22634 comments Mod
Yeah, I know. I'm just wondering what people think looks better.

message 788: by [deleted user] (new)

I like Lyn, but i think usually its Lynn

message 789: by Acacia (new)

Acacia (acaciaa) I like Lynn.

message 794: by Sophia (last edited Mar 28, 2012 10:47AM) (new)

Sophia | 64 comments I need a name for a guy who is a high ranking officer in the war resistence. He is really smart, able to design unique and uninvented weapons. Friend to the protagonist. Originally his name was Nerd, but I decided that was extremely stupid and cheesy.
