Welcome! How The Picture Book Club Works (themes, voting, etc)

Also, regarding the timeline as to when the themes/nominations/voting selection takes palce:
For example, in choosing March's theme (and so on):
Poll goes up to select the theme for March the last week of January (for April, last week of February and so on)
Nominations for March books open first week of February and are open one week
Voting for books takes place second week
This leaves two weeks+ to get the books in time for the first of the month when the discussion opens.

Thanks from me as well (I have discovered so many great picture books this year). This clear explanation also makes it easier for us if we need to explain the way the Picture Book Club works to anyone.
Thanks, ladies! :-) It's so exciting to have new members and I hope this will help them feel welcome in the group and familiar with how it works.
And, Gundula, as you say, this is a great thread to direct them to if questions pop up elsewhere. Thanks!

I am very new, and this is very helpful. I'm excited to join you.

Welcome, Sharyn! Glad to have you here. If you haven't had a chance to vote yet, the poll is up to select our theme for February if you'd like to participate :->

Thanks so much for the compliment! And, welcome to our group :-)
I'm not sure we have a discussion specifically on illustrated e-books, but we do have a thread started for "children's ebooks" and perhaps you might find what you are looking for there or could post your question there?

Since I am so new to the picture book world, I really look to this group to share those hidden gems.
Voting is again hard for me since I don't know any of the titles I am not sure what to vote on. When I have the time I take the titles and search each title and see if I can find any information about them.
Just wanted to comment about the process from a newbie's point of view.
I try to list books and then vote, but some months I just don't have enough time to even get the books and read them.
Thanks again for making this group so wonderful. I hope some day I will be adding titles and voting every month.

For me, the best way to nominate books is to do a search online of my local library shelves. Most of the books I nominate, I have not read, they simply look interesting (and I only nominate books that are available at my library or that I own copies of myself, and I also only vote for books I know I can get at the library or that I own).

Thank you, Leslie. I really appreciate you sharing your perspective.
Like Gundula, I often search my library online to see what books they might have on a particular subject and that helps me with nominations. Of course, please never feel that you *have to* nominate or vote. I'm delighted that you are enjoying the group and participating in our discussions when you have time :-)

I also do the library search because I know that the master list can be and is to be used later for members to find suitable books on a given subject (I always add way too many books, perhaps, but a good master list can be and is a later asset).

My pleasure! Happy to have you aboard.
You might also enjoy checking out our Quarterly Caldecott threads; we have just started reading the Caldecott winners and have only two threads so far, January and one just concluding for April. You are also always welcome to post thoughts in past months' threads.

Hi Kathryn!
In my business I stumbled on a problem that I think knowledgeable members of this group could help me solve, but I am not sure it is appropriate for me to ask such questions. Is there a way I could contact you privately, so you could decide?
Thanks.

Thanks. :-)

First, we start with selecting a theme. This goes out in the POLLS and votes are collected in the usual poll "click your choice" method.
Once the theme is selected, there are two steps to the book selection process. First, I call for *nominations* and this opens the thread to all of you to nominate books you feel are appropriate for the theme and that you'd be excited to see on the official group reads. Please keep in mind that the Picture Book Club is intended to represent the youngest age group here in the Children's Book Club so most books should be appropriate for ages 4-8 (usually 32-page picture books) though we do try to include a one or two for older children each month, as well.
If you are curious whether a book has been selected during a previous month's theme, you can always check out our group *bookshelf* to see a list of all the books we've read in the Picture Book Club thus far.
After about a week, the thread is "closed" to nominations and then you are able to *vote* on the five books (from the nominations list so that everyone is voting from the same list) that you want to be our official club reads. You vote by listing them in the "comments section" of the thread. When the votes come in, I tally those and the top five votes are the winners (I choose an alternate (sixth) title as well).
Each person gets *five votes* and we choose five books. The sixth book is an "alternate title" as invariably some members are unable to get all five of the main titles and this gives them another chance to read another book with the group. Also, it gives me as moderator a little "wiggle room" to try to round out a theme or better accommodate a wider variety of age groups in the picture book realm. And, of course, you are welcome to read all six if you can :-)
I hope this helps to clarify the process for our newer members. It's wonderful to have such a thriving club and I'm honored to be the moderator! Please ask if you have any questions.
Clicking here will take you to a list of our prior years' themes, and you may also suggest themes in the comments on this thread, too:
