Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I just started using Spotify and have been listening to a great mix of "funeral songs."

A few I liked:
"Many Rivers to Cross," Jimmy Cliff
"Dead Flowers," Rolling Stones
"Spirit in the Sky," Norman Greenbaum
"Just a Closer Walk With Thee," Treme Jazz Band

Still my favorite Stones song, EVER.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Clark, do you know who that song was written for? I heard a line, "take me down, little Susie," and wondered who Susie/Susan would have been?

Haven't a clue Cynthia but a friend of mine, who shall remain nameless and who is not altogether unfamiliar with opiates, claims this is the best heroin song in the world and the Stones' "The Spider and the Fly" is the best cocaine song in the world.

message 2158: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Well then. I like Bonnie Raitt's "Guilty" when I feel like getting smashed. Thankfully, this does not happen too often.

Ellen was the subject of the Clash song, "Should I Stay or Should I Go." Clark probably already knew that. She also was the girl singer in a couple of Meatloaf songs.

Believe it or not, Phil, I wasn't referring to myself but rather a dumbass friend who finally gave that shit up before he went tits up.

For a while there back in the 70's, every southern band had to have the equivalent of Skynyrd's "Free Bird" in their repertoire.

How True. Much of the desire to have what we now think of a 'Jam Band' tune in the lineup went to both the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band. The Van Zant boys (of Lynyrd Skynyrd) made numerous comments in interviews about the admiration for and friendship with Duane and Greg.

In fact there was a whole decade or so of bands that just couldn't find the end of the song they were playing. Some notoriously had trouble finding the start! (see Iron Butterfly for an example of both in one song)

Ah, those were the days where a concert was as likely to be a riot as it was to be anything.
