mariel, thanks for clearing that up. as i said, i never saw the libertine (i did see the original late 60's comedy), and was sort of guessing that his part was based on a notorious character. i actually think the marquis de sade writings are really funny and that most people don't get the point of his work.
based on my readings of sade, i thought quills was overwrought and off the mark. i like kate, that's why i saw it. i didn't expect the movie to have any real resonance with sade's life and writings.
I think Quills was using Sade as a hook to make a historical drama about how much it sucked to be a maid (for some reason I'm thinking about Sister My Sister film now). Winslet is great at showing understanding of having no choices or freedom. Joaquin Phoenix though? Dull. Not his best. (Maybe I shouldn't try to remember films I saw as a teenager.)I've never read any of Sade's work. Maybe I will some day. I used to shy away from sexual stories and films 'cause it had nothing to do with me if I wasn't their partner. Though they can tell you a lot about someone (heey like Sister My Sister).
I should add Jodhi May to actresses whom I'll see in anything. She's amazing. Most people forget about her 'cause she was in almost all costume dramas for like forever.
Who is Jodhi May, Mariel, that name does not sound familiar. I think the Marquis de Sade was not for everyone. I have not read his work nor would I like to.
I really disliked QUILLS pretty intensely, a very silly little movie that people seemed to take very seriously indeed. All those folks in their underwear twitching twitching twitching so that we could see how crazy they were, I mean really. Some cool ideas, to be fair, but it only seemed interested in taking them in very ordinary directions.
Jodhi May was a child in the South African film A World Apart. Love that film. She's most known for The Last of the Mohicians? I think?
Sister My Sister and the tv version of The Turn of the Screw are my favorites, as well as The House of Mirth (she's almost as great of a baddie as Laura Linney in that one) and I liked her a lot in other tv films Mayor of Casterbridge, Daniel Deronda and Tipping the Velvet (not as good as the book). I'm a total actress fangirl. Once I find one I like I go out of my way to see as much of their work as I can.
I saw Daniel Deronda, was she the blonde actress,it has been during the summer that i saw that movie.
Robert Downey Jr. he never makes a bad film, i have seen everyone of his films. other than that i can't think of any.
mc avoy will soon appear in the new robert redford film that examines the assassination of abraham lincoln. i'm curious ...
Bookgirl89 wrote: "Robert Downey Jr. he never makes a bad film, i have seen everyone of his films. other than that i can't think of any. other than that i can't think of any."I agree. He's my favorite actor aswell :)
Lenonardo Dicaprio - he makes some weird movies, but he's great to watch on screenAshley Judd - she's fun to watch
Charlize Theron
I don't remember if I've commented on this one or not (sad I know), but I don't think I have, so here it goes.I will watch anything (doesn't guarantee I'll like it, but I'll watch it) with:
Actors:
Leonardo DiCaprio (I think he's a great actor who chooses interesting scripts)
Johnny Depp (Love him! I find his acting impeccable and he can play a wide range of roles)
Harrison Ford (There's just something about him I enjoy)
Nicholas Cage (He seems to mostly play the intelligent part, and he plays it well.)
Heath Ledger (still working on seeing all the movies he made before he died)
Antonio Banderas (Good actor, and I love to just look at him)
Channing Tatum (I think he's a great actor)
David Boreanaz (he plays the brooding and the smart-aleck parts well)
Josh Lucas (There's just something about him)
Tom Felton (He's a great actor, and yes, I liked him before Harry Potter)
Actresses:
Sandra Bullock (Wonderful actress)
Nicole Kidman (again, wonderful actress)
Reese Witherspoon (Love her, especially when she plays a down-to-earth character)
Betty White (hilarious and a wonderful actress who plays the parts she has well)
Directors (I know they aren't really IN the movie, but I have several I'll watch if they direct and/or produce it):
Tim Burton (I love his creepy, "dark-side of things" style)
Steven Spielberg (pure genius...no other words...)
Wes Craven (great horror man!)
M. Night Shyamalan (Yes, I know alot of people hate his movies, but most have an under-lying statement that I like, there's only been one of his I haven't enjoyed)
All four of these directors I think are geniuses in their own way and they make some pretty good movies too ^_^
Johnny Depp, as a rule, but this might have to stop. I don't know if I'm going to see the upcoming PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN film, usually a must-see because I am a helpless fan of Depp's Capt. Jack Sparrow, on account of the film being directed by the unspeakable Rob Marshall, one of worst filmmakers in history. And now I see that Depp's proposed remake of THE THIN MAN might be directed by the cinematically retarded uber-scumbag Marshall, and I can only wonder what kind of horrific spell has been cast on Mr. Depp to make him contemplate continuing his association with the director of two of the worst films ever made: CHICAGO and NINE.
Johnny Depp is really wonderful!I'm crazy about his characters, esp. Sweeney Todd, Jack Sparrow and James Barrie (Finding Neverland). Apart from him I like Jake Gyllenhaal(after Donnie Darko, 'cause it's my favourite movie) and Jim Carrey.
Among the actresses: Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.
Johnny Depp - love his new movie the touristMatt Damon - love the bourne series
Jake Gyllenhall - cute
Lee Pace - loved him in Possession
Alex Oloughlin - guy is so good looking lol
It doesn't always pay off, but Kevin Spacey and John Malkovitch. I'm sure there are many more, oh go ahead and add Johnny Depp, but those are the first few that come to mind where even if the movie sucks, their part is always entertaining. If we were to add directors to the list: Joel and Ethan Coen (they can do no wrong), Tim Burton (even his bad films are still visually stimulating), Rob Zombie (what can I say I like my horror), and Peter Jackson. Again, there are probably more, but those are the first few to come to mind.
Leonardo DiCaprio Christian Bale
Edward Norton
There are many others but those three off the top of my head
A few years ago I would have probably said Johnny Depp but since signing on to an entire franchise of Pirates of the Carribean, I think he's begun making too many movies and no longer holds out for those great roles. The one actor who I think has the ability to improve any movie simply by his presence is Crispin Glover. Sometimes he's over the top, sometimes he's just creepy, sometimes simply strange but always awesome. If I were a casting agent I would try to find a role for him in any movie I worked on.
The other two actors that will convince me to try a film even if I have no other interest in it are Steve Buscemi, and Christopher Walken for much the same reasons as Crispin Glover.
All 3 of these folks have been in some bad movies but I've never disliked their performances
Johnny DeppRobert Downey, Jr.
Al Pacino
Robert DeNiro
Edward Norton
Christian Bale & Jake Gyllenhall are moving right on up my list though.
As for Actresses...
Reese Witherspoon
Natalie Portman
Nicole Kidman
Sandra Bullock
Julia Roberts
Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Aniston are also hovering around there somewhere.
Machavelli wrote: "John Malkovich, i still haven't seen him in a bad movie."You're right. Can't believe I left him off my list.
Christopher Walken. This man can make just about anything watchable while on screen. Runners up: Peter Stormare, Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Spacey

Was reminded of an actor I just love and I didn't put him on my original list -- Derek Jacoby. Don't know why, but there's just something about his performances that just grab me. In any film he's in, I find myself focusing on him, even when he's not speaking.
derek jacoby is an excellent actor - he's fantastic in just about everything i've ever seen him in. thanks for mentioning him. have you seen LOVE IS THE DEVIL (?) - a film about the life of francis bacon, one of my favorite painters. it's kind of a brutal film, as you might expect, but jacoby is awesome in it.
Phillip wrote: "derek jacoby is an excellent actor - he's fantastic in just about everything i've ever seen him in. thanks for mentioning him. have you seen LOVE IS THE DEVIL (?) - a film about the life of francis..."No, but I'll keep an eye out for it. You ever see the "Cadfael" mysteries? He plays a monk who is also kind of a private eye. Uses technology of the time -- Middle Ages or thereabouts -- to solve crimes. Cool as all hell.
Been a fan of Jacobi for a long long time, since I, CLAUDIUS. I just got to see Derek Jacobi play King Lear, one of the major theatre experiences of my life. He was astonishing -- I doubt there was a dry eye in the house in those final scenes.
Phillip wrote: "derek jacoby is an excellent actor - he's fantastic in just about everything i've ever seen him in. thanks for mentioning him. have you seen LOVE IS THE DEVIL (?) - a film about the life of francis..."I love this film and how they use certain lenses, filters, and camera angles to simulate Bacon's paintings!
"Champagne for my real friends. Real pain for my sham friends!"
Tom wrote: "Been a fan of Jacobi for a long long time, since I, CLAUDIUS. I just got to see Derek Jacobi play King Lear, one of the major theatre experiences of my life. He was astonishing -- I doubt there w..."wow, i would have loved to have seen him playing lear. oh. my. god.
mentioned this in the main thread, but i am adding marion cottilard to my list of actors i will see in anything - i'm going to check out her filmography and start catching up with stuff i haven't seen...... with the exception of NINE. fuggthat.
Phillip, I'd say rent NINE and FF to her big song, "My Husband Makes Movies." She gives that little song all she's got, she's heartbreaking and lovely, which makes it an even more astonishing accomplishment considering she's appearing in a film by the vile Rob Marshall.Don't, and I mean DON'T, bother with any of the rest of the film. Life is too short.

I'd agree with Sam Worthington. He was really good in the Australian film Somersault, with Abbie Cornish. Daniel Day Lewis is always great. I really like Idris Elba too (just saw him in the British mini-series Luther--terrific).
I guess something's gotta pay the bills. I just hope his recent success in the superhero business won't shoot him in the foot for other opportunities. I think he has the ability to do well with dramatic roles, although I didn't particularly care for his stint in Last Night. I thought of adding JRM to my list. LOL I have a love hate relationship with that dude. Mostly love so I had to put him up after seeing him on your list! Hehehe...by the way, did you see him as Henry VIII in The Tudors? Totally awesome!
As for Idris, he has everything for leading man status. He's got the looks, the swag and he isn't a bad actor either. I'm sorry he won't be able to rise to the stars like some of his contemporaries.
