What Actor Will You Watch in Anything?
you've got an interesting range there...i like quite a few on your director list, but can't imagine ever seeing another james cameron film for as long as i live....(with the exception of aliens, but NOT the directors cut...what were they thinking letting him add all that extra USELESS footage!)
Thanks Phillip! Yeah, my range is very interesting. Oddly enough, I'm the least enthusiastic about war flicks. And I cant believe I didn't think to put John Malkovich on that list almost immediately- love him. Just goes to show you that my list is in fact longer. LOL I'm actually looking forward to seeing the useless footage. LOL
Johnny Depp without question. Just watched him again in Ed Wood last night. Mr. Depp is a tremendous character actor.
I agree with Philip. Yours is a good list gigi. I have reservations about Cate Blanchett, Michael Caine and Sandra Bullock, but aside from those, your list is on the money. As for the directors, Ron Howard would not be on my list but John Sayles would be.
Forrest Whitaker is not a frequently mentioned actor but should be. Way underrated in my book. Just look at him in the CRYING GAME. Stupendous.

Thanks! Wow, you're right about both John Sayles. I can't believe I forgot him. The Crying Game was such a good movie. Forrest Whitaker is definitely underrated. I actually thought that he was AMAZING (as always) as Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.
i still haven't seen last king of scotland. i've got to check that out, otherwise i'm going to have to turn in my forrest fan club card.
Like some peoples mine is rather long....Clive Owen
Cate Blanchett
Brad Pitt
Orlando Bloom
Liam Neeson
Harrison Ford
Colin Firth
Robert Downey Jnr
David Tennant
Ewan McGregor
Sandra Bullock
Will Smith
and i'm sure there are heaps more:)
I can't think of any actors or actress that I would watch in anything. They all make a horrible movie eventually that looks bad from the trailers. I love Nicolas Cage but I won't watch his Bad Luitenant movie because it looks stupid and not my type. I learned a long time ago that just because it has a favorite in it doesn't mean its going to be a favorite to watch. :)
Judy Davis, Gary Oldman, Max von Sydow, Catherine Keener, Emily Mortimer (cute as a button, that one), Jeffrey Wright...
For me it's Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Imelda Staunton, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren (I even sat through Inkheart), Don Cheadle, Robert Downey Jr, Toni Colette, Emma Thompson, Leonardo DiCaprio (especially recently), Marion Cotillard, Geoffrey Rush, and William H. Macy.
nice list - i like those actors. geoffrey rush has made some film choices i didn't like (and therefore missed) but he has breathed good life into a lot of mediocre films - when he works with good directors, he's the man. i don't know imelda staunton's work, i feel like i've seen her in something, but can't remember what. the kate/cate twins are pretty divine, and i kind of miss ian mc kellen - haven't seen him in anything recently, but saw him do richard III with the royal shakespeare company once - an outstanding performance, couldn't believe how good it was. i'm a little mixed on di caprio, sometimes think he's really maturing and getting better, sometimes (inception) mildly disappointed in him. cotillard has been really good in everything i've seen her in, but didn't understand what was up with her accent in inception. love toni collette and robert downey jr, used to love emma thompson, but there was a period there where she was making some bad choices with projects, that seems inevitable when the euros make the hollywood transplant, and don cheadle is really dependable, right? always does good work. love helen mirren - completely blown away by her in the last station, and love her in everything i've ever seen her in, and i haven't even checked out prime suspect yet. mr macy has also made some bad choices with projects, but when he's on board with a good director, he does great work.
When I was young, I'd watch favorite actors in many movies. It burned itself out. I prefer watching movies that are good. Even favorite directors can get old sometimes.
Big Imelda Staunton fan here, esp. VERA DRAKE. Sir Ian has never been a favorite of mine, but I did think he just plain WAS Gandalf.Marion Cotillard, man.
Morgan FreemanClint Eastwood
Robert Downey Jr
Clive Owen
Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Piccard...)
Helen Mirren
Hugh Jackman (Kate & Leopold was a so-so film but Hugh Jackman came across as 3D compared to the others)
Gene Kelly
John Cleese
Jet Li
oh, duh - imelda staunton - vera drake. now i know who you folks are talking about - she's fabulous.
I liked The Desperate Hours. I was thinking more of some of his early 30s movies before he became a star. He was pretty good at choosing when he could. Warners Brothers wasn't the easiest studio to work for because they thought putting stars into lousy movies made them humble and meek.
isn't desperate hours the one where bogart is holed up in that suburban house overnight with a leave it to beaver kind of family and the cops are after him? if so, i really didn't like it. but i may be confusing it with something else.
it just seems like a not so very good made for television kind of film. like a bad combination of father knows best and public enemy. it's not that i mind seeing him in a bad guy role - it's the direction ... mostly.
You never saw the remake which is way over the top and really silly! I think you looking at the sets which were very similar to TV sets at the time.
remake?wyler, well, that's what i want to know ... what went wrong? it's no big thing - we just disagree here. 'nuff said.
I'm not saying it was his best but I think it ok. Small budget when big films were the technicolor cinemascope marvels. I think it had a real feel to it for the times and the director wanted to provide the feeling that this was a place where regular people could live. It was also during the rise of suburbia where there were still questions about how people were going to live and thrive there.
Good actors but definitely not immune to bad film disorder. Or in some cases. mediocre films. On the whole, they really try to make good films.
at the moment these gentleman's:Leonardo Dicaprio - I think he is incapable of choosing the wrong script, enjoyed every movie he's in.
Johnny Depp
Joseph Gordon-Levitt- such an uderrated actor, all of his performances are great.
Cillian Murphy
Ken Watanabe
Ryan Gosling
Jack Nicholson
Colin Firth
Viggo Mortensen
Robert Downey Jr.
Woody Harrelson
Ewan McGregor
I'm trying to watch every film they're in. I've just finnished Leo's filmography ;)
Ladies:
Cate Blanchett
Naomi Watts
Helena Bonham-Carter
Kate Winslet
Meryl Streep
Susan Sarandon
Emma Thompson
Juliette Binoche
I would have to agree with Bette Davis. But she had bad movies too. Many modern actors all look the same. When I turn on HBO, I think I'm seeing twins in every movie. Loud movie music and quick camera work and editing are supposed to supersede talent and ability of an actor. Can't give anyone too much dialog either, the audience might not be able to follow.
Cary GrantHumphrey Bogart
Robert Taylor
Stewart Granger
Ingrid Bergman
Norma Shearer
Thomas Mitchell
Al Pacino
Gene Hackman
John Cusack
Russell Crowe
Helen Mirren
Cate Blanchett
Bruce Campbell - Hail to the King, baby!
Hugh Jackman and Leonardo DeCaprio -- because they are SO luscious!
John Turturro, although I guess I can't say *anything* as I drew the line at the second Transformers film.John Malkovich.
For actresses, it is always Samantha Morton.
I like watching Judi Dench, or Dame Judi, as she is formally known, I liked her in Mrs. Brown, and also Cransford, the movie adaptation by Sue Birtwhistle, it is very charming. Who is Thomas Mitchell, his name doesn't ring a bell. I have Seven Years in Tibet, for the obvious eye candy, Brad Pitt. I like Johnny Depp, he is not so shabby. Russell Crowe, haven't seen any of his films, lately. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett, Genevieve Bujold, Vanessa Redgrave Anne of a Thousand Days and Mary Queen of Scots, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in Taming of the Shrew.

love samantha morton!
Yep -- Samantha Morton is excellent. I really liked her in THE LIBERTINE. It was really fun watching her play a "bad" actress, and blooming into a "good" actress. Robin -- Thomas Mitchell is a character actor from the 30s and 40s. Some of the more well-known parts he played are Scarlett O'Hara's father in GONE WITH THE WIND, the pilot who is losing his sight in ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS, and the alcoholic doctor in STAGECOACH. I don't think I've ever seen him give a bad performance.
hey cindy, the libertine was a euro-sex-comedy from the late 1960's with jean-louis trintignant. was there a remake? or does this film with samantha morton have nothing to do with the original. i haven't heard of it. i'll look for it, i'm a fan of hers; she's someone i will watch in just about anything ... even minority report.
ohhh, that film. depp's character seemed (sort of) based on the marquis de sade if i'm not mistaken. i didn't see it. i must have overlooked the fact that samantha morton was in it.thanks for mentioning thomas mitchell - AND stagecoach! he also played jimmy stewart's uncle billy in it's a wonderful life.
Yes, he was in that one. Have not seen that one either, but I remembered the title, so I figured that is who she was referring to.
I would pay to watch Philip Seymour Hoffman read the telephone book. He can take a mundane line and put a spin on it that makes it pop (remember "nice doing business with you" in Red Dragon). His everyman appearance is endearing. Plus, he often looks like he's having a good time ("Pirate Radio" was ok-good movie but he looked like he was having a ball).
I think I've heard your first reference to Philip Seymour-Hoffman used to describe another person, or actor. I would definitely like to see Marlon Brando his earlier years ala. Mutiny on the Bounty, or Streetcar, he was svelte than. Johnny Depp, Cary Grant, some Brad Pitt, before the facial hair. John Cusack,Kate Beckinsdale, Deborah Kerr, The list is endless in my case, Humphrey Bogart, Doris Day, Rock Hudson.

He was based on a different figure from history, the earl of Rochester. Same difference pretty much, controversial writings on controversial sexual proclivities. The stage production with John Malkovich was supposed to be quite good. The film disappointed me montage-ing all of the relationship moments with Barry and Rochester.
(My twin and I had a strange obsession with all things Charles II in middle school.)
Quills was a weird Sade movie. I remember I liked Kate Winslet more than anything else.
