I know what you mean. There's a trend happening outside the US (can't remember which country) that book stores are selling ebooks in the store. The buyer gets a nice cardboard copy of the book cover with the ebook access code. I think that would be CUTE and would help B&M stores in the US out a lot.
I think that soon bookstores will be a thing of the past. Which makes me want to cry. You'll still be able to buy books, but I think you'll find them only at Wal-Mart and Amazon.I really hope I'm wrong with this. Everytime I go to my bookstore, it's usually fairly busy. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I think we'll see used book stores for a while yet. Most of the brick and mortar retail stores now have on line stores to, that may keep them around a bit. I to hate the loss of book stores. People don't know anymore the joy of just spending an entire afternoon wandering through the stacks looking for treasures you haven't already heard of...
To be honest, I haven't really enjoyed hanging out in bookstores since people started treating them like their children's playgrounds and oh yes, I really want to hear your entire phone conversation, too.
I hope we're both right, Mike! I love browsing book stores. Both new and used. Scott, tThe parents who shop at my local book store are usually fairly sophisticated. I don't think I've ever suffered crazy children there. I do know what you mean about phone conversations, though. Or people standing and refusing to move when you want to look at the same section as them.
I bought a cell phone jammer early last year that has come in handy a million times. I keep it in my car and turn it on when I see people driving and talking or texting near me (morons). It's also Hilarious to use in movie theaters or in any public place where someone is incessantly nattering away. They fit easily in your pocket and have hours of rechargeable battery life. The only downside is if kept on for a length of time they can grow rather warm. I recommend them highly :)
The bookstore is good for socializing too. Our local group meets at the bookstore once a month. When the Borders closed, we were down a bookstore to meet at. :(
That's sad, Lady D. Grant, what are these cell phone jammers? They sound almost like a blessing from Heaven.
Ooooohhhh. It's just what I thought it was...a blessing from heaven indeed. LOLThanks Grant! There's about a thousand places I could use one of those!
Lol oh I promise you'll get incredible use out of the thing! If you get serious about buying one let me know and I'll give ya some tips!

I can't belive you're willing to spend that kind of money on those things. They are EXPENSIVE, lol. For the cheapest I found is $130 = 18 Agency6 books...
If I'm reading I can drown out everything around me. It's like I have on invisible headphones or something. It has to be SUPER loud and obnoxious for me to notice (unless it's scary. I don't do scary. I can't even drown it out or close my eyes. I leave the room.).
Oh it's totally worth the money, MrsJ. Just think how much I'm saving on bail and lawyer fees ;)
(I'm your opposite. I DESPISE people who are loud in movies and am uber confrontational so this is actually a really good alternative to me beating the hell out of someone)

See, I don't really go to movies. I'd rather stay home and read or hang out. :-) I can't remember the last movie I saw in the theater.
Ah, I'm a movie buff. I treat myself a couple of times a month
I love going to the movies, too. I haven't been in a while, though. The last one I saw was Insidious, which wasn't bad. There's also a drive in my wife and I enjoy going to during the summer months.

What IS wizard's 1st rule? For that matter what is wizard's last rule?

You are actually correct. The brick and morter bookstores are suffering greatly. With the e-readers, internet shopping, stores can't really compete with those prices or conveniences. It's really sad because one of the most enjoyable things to do is to find used bookstores to browse in and find all the treasures they collected over the years. I love my job as a bookseller, but I too thought of owning a bookstore. Now would definitely not be the time.
