Twilight v. Harry Potter?

Justeen I wasn't going to say anything, but grrr some people make me so angry. I think it all boils down to whether you're a lazy reader or not. The Twilight Saga has absolutely no depth. It's just shallow and quite frankly, a boring read. After I finished Breaking Dawn I went back and re-read the saga again just to see if I was missing something...and I'm still left wondering how this series is popular at all. Harry Potter can be taken as a great heroic fantasy, but much more than that it actually has depth and has concepts that exist in our world as well as in the one created by JKR. Concepts that are deep and actually make you think. After a good read I'm always left thinking about it for months after I've read it, with Twilight I forgot it after a day. Twilight's audience is teenage girls, which should tell you right away what kind of book it is. To compare it to Harry Potter is a joke. And as for what someone commented earlier about how you never know what's going to happen next in Twilight is an even bigger joke. The plot was completely predictable and the only thing that surprised me was Breaking Dawn and it's absurdity. I'll leave it at that.

Miranda Twilight holds a certain place, but it's no where near the place that Harry Potter has. You have those days when you want to read about a sexy vampire story, and times when you want to read about a magical world where wizards and witches live. Both are the best at the genra!

Jessica Justeen - good analysis, I agree with the "shallow"

Clare D' Lune I think its silly that they are compared. I mean, we're talking about witches and wizards, magic and wands, magic school and animals, etc... then we compare it to a love story between a human and a vampire. Not even CLOSE to the same thing. Are there even vamps in HP? I know that every fantasy book is compared to Harry Potter, but that's silly because they are all different. Twilight appeals to people, mainly girls, who are from ages 13-30 or so... Harry Potter appeals to people from ages 7-40, of both boys and girls, so of course HP is going to sell more and be more popular. They both attract different reader anyway, so why bother compare them?

Kamberli I think Twilight was awesome!!! It was so creative and different from all the other vampire strories I've read!!! Plus It gad so much good volcabulary!!! I learned a lot of new words and just how good some peoples imagination are!!! I think the Twilight saga beats all books!!!

TheKoreanOne Twilight is a fun, silly, fantastic bit of fluff. (As a teen, my intro to vampires was made by Anne Rice. She was a gorgeous story-teller. Her witch series was wonderful too. And when the two came together....WOW. Too bad she gave it up.)

Harry Potter is a living, breathing, leviathan of a character whose world is incredibly enchanting. The end.

Bella Oh my goodness, there are some serious comments made here.
Comparing HP and Twilght is a dangerous thing.
Twilight is not a great 'literary' master-piece, however it sure has and will continue to appeal to a certain reader and audience; for whatever reason.
I enjoyed the Twilight series because it reminded me of a time when being young,in love and the center of someone's universe was so nice. When someone thought about me and what I wanted or didn't want was what they were bound to do, just to make me happy. As I felt the same for that person. Sigh.
HP on the other hand, great writing and appeals to all who read it on some level of who they are, were and what right and wrong is about. HP has this kind of depth to it. So, it can appeal to anyone for many reasons.
Trying to determine which one is better is a mistake. They are both great for whomever chooses to pick either series up and gets hooked into it, for whatever reason at that particular time.
It is the characters and the story that we find we can't let go of while we are reading that keep us interested.
Good luck for those of you deciding on one or the other.
Me, I liked them both for different reasons.

Brigid ✩ I don't know why ppl compare HP to Twilight. They're entirely different. Sure, they're both super popular and all, but the similarities pretty much end there.

It sort of just depends on your taste. I'm more of a Twilight person. Harry Potter didn't appeal to me. Does that mean that Twilight is better than HP? Not really. It's just my opinion. Sooo I think this whole debate is pretty pointless. It's one of those things where everyone likes one or the other, or both, or neither, and no one is going to change anybody else's mind. Just saying ...

message 59: by Sella (new) - rated it 1 star

Sella Malin I agree. HP and Twilight are two different things. They're two different genres, even; one a fantasy romance and one a fantasy action/suspense. I don't understand how people can compare them. I love both, and I don't think I would have been able to choose one over the other. They're both amazing.

Vanessa The only thing the two series have in common is that it has to do with the supernatural and the fact that the target audience is teens and young adults. I loved the Twilight series and Harry Potter was pretty amazing as well but they're just such different comodities that you cannot compare the two.

Armina I love both of these books. I could never pick one over the other. I was never obsessed with HP like I was with Twilight, but, sadly, Twilight is just a trend that will go away. People like it now, but will forget about it a year after the Breaking Dawn movie comes out. HP is still talked about, maybe not that much as before the 7th book came out, but a lot of people like HP. I still don't think there is a comparison with these two books. They are totally different, and talk about different things. They might be both fantasy, but Twilight is romance and HP is, in a way, adventurous. HP can be better than twilight in some ways, like how all of the books are nicely written and they all have a well-know plot. the Twilight series on the other hand, is not consistent in how well written the books are. Breaking Dawn was such a disappointment to me. I liked what actually happened, but the plot, and how it was written was not good. I still like both books, and I could never pick one over the other.

message 62: by Nola (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nola Tillman Hmm, this is an interesting thread.

Let me start by saying that I am a voracious used bookstore shopper. The first time I really and intentionally purchased a new book was a Harry Potter book - and subsequent books. The second time, not surprisingly, was the Twilight books.

That said, I'll agree with a lot of the anti-Twilight posts. The story is shallow, and Bella and her namby-pamby, "I'm not good enough for you, I'm not pretty enough for you" garbage really got on my nerves. The whole third wife thing in the third book made me want to scream; if a paper cut could distract Jasper, then why didn't she just make a superficial cut, distract the fighters, and be done with it?

BUT, I did enjoy the story, and I enjoyed Breaking Dawn most of all. Primarily because we FINALLY got past all the teen angst, Bella grew up and FINALLY took some action. That, for me, is why BD is the best of the four.

I also think that there is another layer you can read into the Twilight series - the most obvious, of course, being the whole "you can overcome your natural inclinations and be a better, more moral person." Wouldn't that apply to many of us? My mom, for instance, had a violent temper, and that is a "natural" (or, well, naturally learned) thing that I have to overcome on a daily basis. Then there is the whole "Wuthering Heights" deal - I have to go read WH to see the parallels, but if nothing else "perhaps the only redeeming thing is their love" ;).

ALL OF THAT SAID, Harry Potter is definitely well written, with intricacies beyond belief, things you didn't know about in the first book that came to play in the fourth book or last book. Rowlings did an amazing job of planning and plotting, and as a wanna-be writer, that alone amazes me.

But you can't really compare the two. As someone said earlier, Meyers purpose seemed to be to make everyone wish they were loved like Bella was loved by Edward (I'm not going to say "wanna be Bella" because who would WANT to be that wishy washy?!?!?!). But Rowlings is exploring love, sacrifice, and friendship so fully.

So, overall, put me in the "apples to oranges" group.

FogStar | ArmageddonStar -The Brave- Harry Potter is a bunch of... well I can't say the word here... anyway Twilight COMPLETELY outdoes Harry Potter in many ways. First, it is a hell of a lot more interesting. Second, Harry Potter is pretty... un-appealing to me. I say this because once started reading it, I was so annoyed and angry that the stupid author had even written it. Third, Stephanie Meyer has a much more creative mind, and even if you don't like her books now, you will. I do not mean to offend all of you witchcraft lovers...

cindy Quoting from my blogs...
Read the rest of it here

I hate Harry Potter books. Those books are soooo gooooood that I almost forget every fantasy book I read before and lost interest to read any after them. And every attempt to compare this story to another would make me consider it's an act of insult. Well... almost every time. Some other time it just made me laugh out loud 'cause I think it's not even in the same level.
...
...
And then there are a vampire story everyone buzzing around. In the book club, in the forums, advertising from bookstores. It's the next Harry Potter. It's even bigger than Harry Potter. The movie even shifting HP6 movie schedule released. OK, lets find out. Book one, wow..., it hooked me and I couldn’t let this book down. Book two, ehmm... well... it's OK, I think. Book three, say what...??! Book four.... oh, common... what ridiculous thing it is... (and if u think albus severus potter was a rather compulsion name, try Renesmee, ha!)

message 65: by Merenwen (last edited Feb 25, 2009 02:40AM) (new)

Merenwen Here's my two cents...

I took a break from the Harry Potter series, because I was getting a little tired of it, but I did pick it up again. I took a break from number 6 'cause I've been reading other books. I still love the series, but sometimes it's not what I want to read at the moment.

Twilight was... okay. I would have liked it more if I had read it a year or two ago, instead of reading it a couple of months ago.

And now, a quick wrap-up:

HP - good, but sometimes tiring if read in huge chunks. Rowling is very good at description - she doesn't go overboard, but she still makes it seem real.

Twilight - I hope Bella grows a thicker skin in New Moon, because I thought she was a bit of a wimp. If Edward glared at me, I wouldn't just start crying like it's the end of the world. I would glare back with as much hatred as possible. Edward is rather pompous. But the book is worth reading for the villain. Sounds strange, but it's true. Very few books I've read have had really well-written villains.

My final verdict....

My favourite author of all time is neither Rowling nor Meyer.

IT'S TAMORA PIERCE!!!!!!!!!!

Jaydi i dont care wut ne uv u say or tink but Twilight will ALWAYZ be better! :)

message 68: by Han (last edited Nov 29, 2008 05:06AM) (new)

Han Heres what I think:

Twilight - Twilight's by far the best thing I've read. It's packed with romance and sexy vampires, what more do you want? Personally, I don't think that it's stupid or absurd or whatever. It's just about two people from different worlds falling in love.

Harry Potter - I haven't read it yet, and I'm not planning to read it. No offense but when I finished the first page, I couldn't even imagine myself finishing the second page. That's just because I'm not into all those magical wizardy stuff.

But hey, that's my opinion.
Oh, and by the way, this is a discussion site, not a site where you can criticize the authors. If you call them stupid or whatever, I'd personally like to see you write anything better.

message 69: by gabe (new) - rated it 3 stars

gabe han,
im not into that stuff either
but all i can say as a person who is on this side of things
Harry Potter Vs. Twilight
it's no contest and anybody who has read both books knows that
HP is simply a more intelligent book
and if you don't want to read it that is fine
but just know that you are wrong
this is not subjective
Rowling is simply writing in another league
read the first three books, then you'll be hooked, and you'll be happy

message 70: by 4ubaby (new)

4ubaby Well if they are comparing the series with just the last book than I don't think it is far to twilight. I believe that the forth book could have been a lot more productive. She could have added a little more detail to things that people actually wanted to read. Okay so she put some detail into when Jacob came and Bella as happy. You really didn't need to mention everything because you know Jacob can't hold in his temper and she should have let Jacob and Edward fight. That brings me to another point to she can't even right a decent fight scene. Or a kissing scene if I get a little more DETAILED which is something Stephine failed to do. All the times she could have written awesome fighting scenes. The second book wasn't a best seller for a reason ya know. In my experience the second book all ways sucks (no pun intended)but I mean Edward leaving how original.
Now Harry potter i can't actually say much about him because i just haven't gotten to reading the books but I have seen the movies and they are wonderfully exciting now i probably should wait until i see the twilight movie to talk about it but one of my friends said it was terrible and i believe her. Most movies that are books too suck if you have actually read the books so now I guess i am done, but just know I pick Harry Potter.

I will always love Twilight, there's no doubt about that. But I still love Harry Potter.
They're both amazing authors and amazing stories.

message 72: by Han (last edited Nov 29, 2008 03:43PM) (new)

Han Whatever.
And, I never said that I didn't like Harry Potter. I just said that I'm not into those things. Yes, I'm still too young to know what I'm reading but you can't judge what my interests are because you don't know me.

But my point was, these two books shouldn't be compared because they are totally different.

message 73: by Anna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anna Hardesty

Seriously.
That's basically what I was saying, I just didn't emphasize on it.
I love reading.
I read whatever I think sounds/looks good.
I read Harry Potter growing up, I read Twilight over the summer. Both good, but I've read better.

THEY'RE BOOKS.

This is absurdity, why are people fighting over books? Both of these books are awesome in their own way. They have their own goods and bads, so STOP COMPARING THEM AND GET OVER IT.

: Don't apologize, as Anna said, this is a discussion site.
All I'm asking for all of these people to do is: STOP COMPARING THE BOOKS, LEAVE THEM & THEIR AUTHORS ALONE FOR GOODNESS SAKES. THEY'RE JUST NORMAL BOOKS. NO ONE ASKED ANYONE TO COMPARE IT. WHOEVER STARTED THIS NONSENSE CAN GO JUMP OFF A CLIFF @:

Melissa You know, I enjoyed the Harry Potter books, but I never got all gung-ho about them the way, honestly, that I did about the Twilight series. They were well-written, yes, and enjoyable, but I can't say I was so terribly upset when they ended (and that has nothing to do with whether I found the culmination satisfying or not). They were a good series, but I didn't get anywhere near as attached to the Harry Potter series as I did to Melanie Rawn's Dragon Prince series, or Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. I AM, however (like others) growing weary of the Twilight/Harry Potter series comparisons - they're NOTHING alike! It's like comparing apples to bananas! We should be enjoying each series for what they offer up, and not trying to figure out how one compares to the other.

Khadija JKR is sooo creative!! alot more so than SM!! hell, she made a whole NEW world!!

Khadija this site is created for discussing books. we cannot NOT discuss them, and compare them if we want to. after all, we r free to express our opinions...soo...if anyone doesn't like this thread and thinks its stupid to compare these books, they should just leave this discussion alone!

Khadija harry potter is the good apple. twilight is the rotten banana :) lol!

Khadija actually not twilight..i loved twlilght...but the twilight SAGA is the rotten banana!! ( fans of twilight, no offence...so plz don't attack me with posts!)

Christina Washburn I am twenty three years old and i have read both sets of books. Harry Potter sets out in my mind because it was just good writing and good story telling. However i have another friend who is the exact age as i am. She has never read Harry Potter nor plans to. She doesnt like to read at all especially fantasy books. But she tried Twilight and was hooked from then on. I also read Twilight and got as hooked on it as I did Harry Potter. Like my friend certain books appeal to certain people. To me books are about imagination and I truly believe that movies ruin books. I like reading stuff that makes me think and daydream. I find my happy place in reading. I dont have a preference for eather book. I find my happy place in both. I dont think they should be compared in anyway possible just because they are diffrent. They are both good sets of books. People need to stop getting huffy when someone says they dont like the books. Its there oppinion to think what they would like.

Khadija i'm 14 btw...and all i was saying - i didn't mean offence or anything- is that if u were growing tired and sick of this thread then u r not forced to read it or read my posts....and i'm NOT immature!

Khadija oh. btw, we r off topic by now...this thread isn't for discussing my maturity. it's for discussing the topic itself. so enough about me...

Jacquelyn I think this is all trivial. Truly it’s like comparing Jennifer Hudson’s singing to Beyonces singing. They are two different styles all together and they appeal in some case two different types of music lovers. As for the books. Harry Potter is for the young, mystical dreamers (the old too). While Twilight was geared to the teenage love story readers looking to grow into romance and the trials that come with it. Of course one isn’t going to be as mystical, detailed, mythical, and elaborate, I am running out of adjectives...But you get my point. Harry being more detailed. I loved them both. Yes I loved Harry more than Twilight, but I love twilight in a different way. They are both doing remarkably well and unless you (and you know who I mean) have a world renowned book published you shouldn’t be so harshly critiquing some one else’s writing capabilities or whether they need to use periods or correct their spelling. Lets respect how well they have both done and move on.

Jacquelyn I am sorry. The title of this room is Twilight v. Harry Potter? So I felt the need to place my opinion. Isnt that why we are all here. Oh I am sorry we are talking about friend request and calling people out of there name. Which by the way was more immature than the age the young lady on here gave 'you'. So move on from that. I am done with this page. I thought it was for enlightenment and to have some one to talk and debate with about these books and others. Not to tell some one giving their opinion "Your lack of maturity shows in your posts". The lack of maturity that was trully showed was in this statement "Yeah, whatever, teenybopper Pott-head. Come back to it when you've got a few more decades of experience. In the interim, I remain a happy Twilighter."
So thanks for tainting my image of this site.

Yes, captain obvious.
We're here to talk about the book.
We've already discussed how they aren't alike, and arguing about it is IMMATURE. You're HOW OLD?

I'm almost 16, I have enough drama in my highschool.
This is a BOOK site.

I'm not even coming back to this group.

"Jacquelyn" thank YOU for ruining my image of this site.

Goodbye!

Melissa I'm done. Have at it, folks. I've already deleted my commentary, aside from my original post, which is where I intended on ending it anyway, before I let targeted replies get my goat. Have fun with what's left of the conversation. I'm just gonna sit back and finish reading "Breaking Dawn", and continue to love the "Twilight" series.

message 99: by Eriana (new)

Eriana okay after reading everyones post I just wanted to applaud all HP die hard fans that gave it the tribute it really deserves. I have never read the Twilight series and I refuse to read it. at least until it isn't a load of ppl only reading it b/c of its fame. I refuse to join bandwagons. Having said that I wont criticize the books but as a HP fan i can def. say it will never ever ever be as good as the Harry Potter series. JKR has created a master piece that will be remembered forever. Our children will be reading these books. The Harry Potter series is def. a classic for the main fact that it has morals and lessons. It shows darkness and lets its reader know that the world isn't a happy jolly place. Pain and suffering does exist. It also shows that friends and family are the most important relationships we can ever possess. Harry Potter has def. changed my life and Twilight may have a huge fan base and it may have racked up a shit load of money for a movie that in my opinion was very crappy but it will never have the same lasting effect that HP had on this planet. That being said twilight has only risen b/c of its fans, trust in a couple yrs they'll go away and we can all breath easy again. However all HP fans knows that the books and its legacy will continue to enter new readers and inspire wannabe readers to write a master piece. Harry Potter all the way!!!!

Kandice Eriana- The Twilight series absolutely stresses loyalty, friendship, responsibility and that life is not all happiness and roses, even for those that seemingly deserve it. Yes it's a bit trite in the romantic aspect, but I have no problem with the lessons my teenage daughters will pick up in the reaing of this series (pre-marital abstinance, being only one!). If they get a bit of heart-throbbing entertainment as well, so much the better!

I agree comparing the 2 is comparing apples to oranges, but to dismiss Twilight because you feel its popularity and relevance are due to fans... how do you think Harry Potter became a bestseller? How do you think the movies and merchandise have made billions? Fans, of which I definitely count myself one!
