Sophie Okay. if you want to, Hina. :D

message 853: by B.R (new) - rated it 3 stars

B.R This may just be me, but I didn't really like Harry Potter. I liked Twilight until the hype. And with Harry Potter, I liked it at first, but then they started to bore me.

I believe that people comparing the two series together is pointless. Harry Potter is a action/adventure. Twilight is a romance.

Harry Potter came out around the time most of us were younger, around the time when I believed in Magic. Twilight came out around the time I was older. I didn't even read Harry Potter until all the comparsions came up. I thought to myself, "It's good, but not that good." I thought the exact same thing when I read Twilight.

But mainly, it's a matter of personal opinion. I this is mine.

Bridget's Quiet Corner There is no comparison. One is about vampires the other is about magic. {to give a lazy summary lol} That's like comparing Romeo and Juliet to James Bond...Two totally different things! But hey, thats just me. I think both have good story lines. Both will attract different audiences {sometimes some will love both} They are two different genres that shouldnt be compared but they are because they are both such popular series.

Maxx Spiess harry potter is SOSOSOSOSOSOSOSOSO much better then twlight in so many ways! im just in love with Harry potter. i hate thats its endding..... :(((((((:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

message 856: by Paige (new) - rated it 5 stars

Paige I don't like the Harry Potter books but I do like the movies. I like the movies, and the books in Twilight.

Jessica Amador It baffles me that this is even a discussion. Harry Potter is untouchable. I could read and reread and watch and re-watch all the movies for the rest of my life.
I read the Twilight saga to get it over with..it was excruciating boredom...good story, good idea, but horribly executed. I tried to go back and read the first Twilight book again and and I couldn't even get through the first page without groaning.

Black Queen HARRY POTTER IS SO BEYOND BETTER THEN TWILIGHT. HARRY POTTER HAS ALL THOSE BOOKS AND MOVIES, I ONLY LIKE TWILIGHT BECUASE OF THE WEREWOLVES. I THINK THE WEREWOLVES MAKE THE MOVIE NOT THE VAMPIRES.

message 859: by Hina (new) - rated it 1 star

Hina In my opinion, I found the books much more interesting as the later books came out. The later ones are much more darker and simply get more interesting. This isn't to say that I don't like the earlier books. I don't think I'll outgrow from these books, ever.

message 862: by Juliet (new) - rated it 1 star

Juliet HOW COULD YOU COMPARE HARRY POTTER AND TWILIGHT!!! Harry Potter is the best book ever and Twilight is complete terrible. Let's compare some characters.
SPOILERS
Bella Swan and Hermione Granger
Bella is a whiny brat who complains about what exactly? That her boyfriend won't screw her? That she has to choose between two guys completely in love with her? Hermione Granger on the other hand, cries occasionally about her friends and how they might be killed by an evil wizard who threatens to take over her world. hmmm..I wonder which character is more reasonable?
Ginny Weasley and Bella Swan
When Edward dumps Bella she spends months in a state of depression that ends in attempted suicide. Ginny, on the other hand, accepts Harry's break up even though she still loves him(not a tear shed). Also, Harry has reasons for dating her, like she's actually fun to be around!
Edward Cullen and Harry Potter
When Edward breaks up with Bella, he lies to her saying that he didnt want her anymore , even though he was just trying to protect her. Harry, on the other hand, tells her exactly why they can't be together, actually showing some emotion. Also, Harry is not a complete jerk.
Jacob Black and Ron Weasley
Jacob is completely jealous and does nothing to hide the fact that he is a complete jerk who wants to hook up with his best friend. Meyers also constantly tries to make him seem funny, but it just doesnt come out that way. However, Ron is actually funny. I laughed out loud more than once because of one of his sarcastic lines. Also, you can tell he loves Hermione and he is jealous of viktor krum, but he doesnt hit on his best friend every chance he gets because thats just weird.

I think comparing Hermione and Bella is wrong, they are two very different people. I dislike Ginny so much though, she's so annoying in Half Blood Prince.

You can, however, compare Sirius Black to Jacob Black, I wonder how many similarities you can spot. Jacob is a copy off him.

oh now i see that. what a copycat. and about Hermione and Bella, I really compared them because they are the two main female characters of the series and I wanted to show how completely different they were. I really compared everyone not to show similarities but how Harry Potter characters beat out Twilight characters anytime.

message 874: by [deleted user] (new)

Harry Potter hands down is the best. Its detail is extraordinary and very well written. But in Twilight the author tells a well known story of a girl falling in love with 2 boys and having to pick between them. It captures nearly every girls dream of falling in love and being rescued. So in her honor she really did write a good story. But nothing can compete with Harry Potter's unrivaled chronology of the boy who lived.

Natalie wizards vs. vampires..... not seeing the comparison... On writing though, i agree with half the people who have commented on that which in summary is HP is genius and Twilight is (a word i shouldn't say) *by the way, im not saying all the people who have commented on this think that way

message 891: by Judy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Judy Basmaji How could anyone be so shallow as to compare Twilight to something as amazing and brilliant as Harry Potter? Personally, I think Harry Potter is the best story of all time<3 The only thing i love about Twilight is Taylor Lautner. Bella's character is too boring and dramatic, and an Edward could not get more emo. The story was very depressing at many points and extremely overdramatic at others. It lacks a sense of humour and a depth of characters. It fails to reach out to the readers in any kind of way. The only part in the whole series that made me cry was the fight with the volturi at the very end. Plus, the ending and the love story could not get more cliche; just like every other love story in history. Overall, the story was nosensical, overdramatic, flawed, and left you with an empty sad depressing feeling. On the other hand, Harry Potter can take you to a whole other universe, and move you from the inside more than anything else can. Nothing has ever made me laugh more, cry more, or simply dream more. And, most importanatly, no matter how many times I reread the books, none of it fades away. JKR can take her readers on an emotional roller coaster that lasts thoughout the entire book, and leaves you breathless and in awe for the next several hours. Each character is simply beatiful, special, and mysterious in their own way. She does not have to use romantic scenes and lustful moments to exite her readers, like stephanie meyer and many others do. Nothing is expected with JKR, and when she finally drops the bomb you realize how perfectly obvious it has been and how oblivious you have been not to pick up all the clues and make all the connections! She can surprise you each and every time, and each surprise is yet more shocking than the last one. It is incredibly beautiful and simply perfect in every way possible. I've always wondered how some people out there can not appreciate or understand the magic JKR has produced; really makes me doubt the human race. I am still in shock of how anyone at all can come up with such a masterpiece. But this is just my opinion :)

message 894: by Juliet (new) - rated it 1 star

Juliet Harry Potter is so wonderfully crafted. Rowling knew what the entire story would be by the first page, everything connects, even the smallest of details. Meanwhile, Twilight could have been just invented and was written like Meyer just thought it up along the way.

Andre and Sophie HA! Thank you for saying that! I was just thinking that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I see the importance of AN OUTLINE! Even though I don't use them. :)

message 896: by Ashlee (last edited May 14, 2011 08:35AM) (new)

Ashlee Charby As there are twenty pages of comments here, I understand that I may repeat something already stated that I have not read; however, my deep appreciation for all things Harry Potter makes it impossible for me not to add my own two cents.

I am in complete agreement that we are comparing apples to oranges here. Yes, both are best-selling series in the YA genre, but that is where the similarities end. Stephanie Meyer has written a fantastical love story. One that I personally find trite, inconsistent and bland. She has inserted fantasy elements into the real world, something that makes it easy for not only tween and teen girls to relate to, but also many other woman of all ages who love the idea of romance and the forbidden relationship.

What JKR has done is similar to this, but more along the lines of Tolkien, in my opinion. Before the die-hard Tolkien fans and literature buffs freak out, I will say this: Comparing the wizarding word to Middle Earth is NOT possible. Tolkien's world is FAR more developed that Rowling's, no question about it. But that is still the direction that she was going. She has created an entire world inside of our world, complete with language, laws, trials and triumphs. Different languages, different races, the archetypal battle between good and evil--all of these things exist in Rowling's world and are lost in Meyer's.

Meyer's series is good for people who enjoy those types of books. It is not my place to say otherwise. To comment on the writing quality, it is definitely sub-par, and only gets made to look worse when comparing it to a series that has actual literary presence. Rowling's series is NOT without it's flaws, but it has actual characteristics of a work of literature, and carries all of the archetypal elements of a heroes tale.

I did research for my senior thesis using Joseph Campbell's model of the heroes journey--it's easy to see the ways in which JKR wove elements of mythology and fantasy and created a true hero in the form of Harry Potter. I doubt many would be able to say that of Edward Cullen OR Bella with all of her whining and angst.

Juliet I once read something on a site that I can't remember the name of about Harry Potter and Twilight. I don't remember exactly, but I think it went something like this:
Lord Voldemort > Cedric Diggory
Harry Potter > Lord Voldemort
Cedric Diggory = Edward Cullen
Therefore, Harry Potter > Twilight

Guess I'll share a sweet but story little story about the Harry Potter novels and I.

When I was a little child I won't read or even look at an book. I would scream for hours if I even had to read one, horrible I know, but it all changed one day.

Once I discovered the Harry Potter series in a box somewhere in my house I remembered watching the first movie with my father and decided to read it out of boredom.

Well, after finishing the first Harry Potter novel I discovered my love for reading and never screamed about reading anything again.

I'm now a book blogger with a dream to become an New York Times Best Selling Author.

Harry Potter changed my life.

And that, is the end of my story.
