Kathy TWILIGHT ALL THE WAY! Sorry I'm a Twihard. Only my opinion not trying to judge other people.

Kristen I hate these comparisons.
Twilight and HP are completely different stories. One is a love story and one is...well, everything else, lol. One's about vampires and the other, magic. They're written in different voices(1st person/3rd person). I could go on and on about the vast differences.
I like them both and have read both a few times.
Now, if you were to get more specific and ask questions like, which one had a better, more thought out plot or romantic love story, or whatever, you'll probably get different answers from different people.
But I do want to say, I've heard there's alot of grammatical errors in Twilight. I personally haven't seen them, I was too focused on the story, I guess. But I saw plenty in the first HP book. They just jumped out at me and were very distracting.
But I like both stories.
Vague comparisons like this aren't based on anything but personal preference and not really a good determination of which one is actually better.

Amen!

Hylian Princess I think that Harry Potter and Twilight are in no way related and the competition between the two is.... idk.. irrelevant.

Blair Harry Potter! There is no comparison, Twilight was poorly written and the characters were so annoying, and the ones that weren't hardly had any mention.

AMEN! That sums it up perfectly - no comparison between HP and Twilight! HP is by far the better series!

-hainekhen- There shouldn't be any competition. It's Harry Potter hands down. Although Harry Potter is a children's book it's just the benchmark for any other YA novels that I have ever read and will ever read, and so far nothing beats J.K. Rowling, she's a genius. Rowling has developed a world within a world that is so fascinating and the characters have developed a great deal through out the books. She does not need gorgeous unbelievably angel like characters for the readers to get hooked, it's the characters personality we're after not their superficial "sparkly" description.

In all fairness, I enjoyed reading Meyer's series. It's a love story, designed for teenage girls to drool with Edward. It may have been fascinating at first, a different theory about vampires, but in the long run I just long for Anne Rice's vampires. Edward is just too prefect to exist, symbolizing someone's impossible ideal guy; a mysterious, alluring, handsome gentleman with a dark past. But in the end there's really nothing more in his character. Bella has always been this damsel in distress, always to be rescued and everything. She's so dependent to Edward. I might have been fascinated in their love story, but it did not last, for that's just it. A story about a love against all odds of a dependent girl and a super perfect guy. I'm sorry but I did not find any dept in it.

Meanwhile Rowling's characters have progressed. They have shown that imperfect characters are far more better for a story plot because then you are after the story itself and not because the guy is hot. Her story telling is just superb that you wish it were true.

Sierra Bookworm☺️♪ I like to think of this comparison as the ends of a rainbow. Harry Potter is the pot of gold, and Twilight is whatever crap is at the other end.

Daryion Harry Potter!!! The seventh movie comes out in 100 days!!! I am so excited!!!

message 766: by Virág (new) - rated it 1 star

Virág You really cannot compare the two. It would be like comparing Jane Austen to some cheap writer that only sold her books because its cheesy-ness captivates young, silly girls.
As for the writing quality and the characters, Harry Potter is by far better. I don't know how some people consider Twilight more interesting.

Twilight is basically this: "Blah blah blah, Edward's jaw is beautiful (repeated 9999 times), OMG I wanna be a vampire, ahh the volturi are so gonna kill my ass, wow we are safe now hurray"
The characters have NO depth watsoever, all they really say is that they "love each other too much for words to describe". Meyers does not know how to write a good story. Nobody that you care about dies in any of her books, no real sacrafices are made(haha, Bella seeing less of her family and "friends" is not a sacrafice. She practically leaped with joy when she could finally be with her perfect vampire husband), and when Bella blabbs about how dangerous things are, it just makes it overly dramatic.

Rowling on the other hand had great plots already thought out, minor characters had good depth, flaws, and passion. She knows how to mix action, humor, romance and drama together for an excellent story. She's done it like 7 times... and Harry Potter has a much better overall opionion than Twilight.

✿Sandra I agree that they are totally different, but I say Harry Potter all the way. I did like Twilight, and I read all of the books in the series and have seen the movies, but Harry Potter is my favorite of all time!!

Avital Seriously? I think the answer is crystal clear- Harry Potter is better.
In every aspect.

message 770: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 09, 2011 01:03PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Rebecca Harry Potter is DEFINETLY WAY BETTER!!!!

The writing in the story was better. The storyline was better. I liked how J.K Rowling connected every book together. The last book in the series tied back to the first one. In Twilight the series kinda just continued without anything tying back except for the love story (which wasnt that good either). It didnt have a "Ohh..OMG" moment at the end of Breaking Dawn like Deathly Hallows did.

I dont hate Twilight but I dont see how anyone could think it was better than Harry Potter (no offence to anyone!)

Cammeron Kaiser I don't think they can even be compared. They are completely different. While we're at it why don't we compare apples to oranges.

message 774: by Nikki (new) - rated it 4 stars

Nikki Harry Potter vs. Twilight. Hmm.

I own both series, and have read them multiple times. Harry Potter has been one of the most amazing reading experiences I've had. I LOVE JK Rowling's work. It's cohesive, and explosive, and over all just a fantastic time. There's struggle and love and pain and good times as well as bed. Friendship and enemies and relationships that are more then believable. Depth and growth. I couldn't have asked for more in a good book series that I can read with my little brother, best friend, mom, husband- to- be, future children. I give Harry potter more then 5 stars.

But Twilight...

I will be the first person to admit that, once i devoured the series the first time and took the time to reread it, it sort of sucked. Meyer's writing just isn't that great. Her descriptors generally, well... suck. Her plot isn't tightly woven and her character interactions read like a lonely teenage girl's secret lustings for that really cute guy on the (insert high school sports team here).

That doesn't mean I did not thoroughly enjoy the series. I tore through Twilight in one school day. I simply could not put the book down. And the first time I read New Moon I cried more then once, having recently gone through a break up at the time. If you become engrossed in the story, or rather the feeling of the story- that longing and rush of want and the pain of not being able to peacefully love someone- and not how it's put down on the page, Twilight is amazing. It blows you away. But I could only do that for so long.

Both series are an excellent way to pass more then a few afternoons. They take you somewhere else a little farther away then the next town over. But all in all, Harry Potter wins for me. JKR just beats the crap out of SM, skill wise. Sorry Twi-hards. I vote for Harry over Edward pretty much every time.

(HP7 Part II-7.15.11. OH YEAH.)

Emily HARRY POTTER HARRY POTTER!!! it is much more creative and all twlight is anout is getting laid. Its actually kind of depressing and the movies were a diaster. yes I loved the first one. It was well written and it kept you reading. But after the first one everything just when down hill. Harry potter makes me cry with happiness. Twilight makes me cry becasue it ended so badly.

tlmfarmgirl I love both these series, and I appreciate them for what they are! Why does there have to be a comparison?

message 781: by Hina (new) - rated it 1 star

Hina Harry Potter v/s Twilight

I personally don't like Twilight and I absolutely love Harry Potter. I've seen so many faults in the book that it just irks me. But the main problem I have is with the fans (no offense). It's just with most Twilight fans they tend to drool over the two main characters and just don't look at the inner picture. I only know a handful of people who like Twilight for what it is and I don't mind that at all. I mind the fact some people can't produce a good answer to why/why not they like something. Oh and please don't say stuff about Harry Potter without proving a proper reason you'll just be insulting yourself.

message 785: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Yea I know and I really don't like S.M. very much. She doesn't write stories (Twilight Saga)that have a ton of detail. Comparing her to J.K.R., S.M. sounds like a small kid writing a story about vampires and werewolves.

message 786: by Hina (new) - rated it 1 star

Hina Not that I'm taking Twilight's side, but if people like it for what it really is then it doesn't really matter.

Yes I don't like to compare JK Rowling to Stephanie Meyer mainly because they are completely different and I don't like it when people just talk rubbish about HP.

message 787: by Hina (new) - rated it 1 star

Hina
Harry Potter book #1 made no sense and I had to put it down because it was boring.

A reason would be nice. Statements just don't work with me I'm afraid.

message 788: by Hina (new) - rated it 1 star

Hina Kimberly,

I respect your opinion, I know the whole world doesn't have to like Harry Potter. And Harry Potter does have quite a lot of 'exciting bits' in it, I can't see why it's boring.

It's not JUST the fans, I mean yes some irk me, but the whole boy meets a girl doesn't work for me. The whole book except the last 50 pages when that bad vampire (sorry forgot his name) started to suck Bella's blood. The two main characters irk me the most. Edward is just an overprotective, creepy stalker and Bella is just a sad, pathetic person who needs to get a backbone and stop acting like she needs a man in her life to live.

I hope you've not been offended by anything I've said. I wasn't trying to be mean or anything.

message 789: by Kiran (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kiran harry potter is far more better than the love sick twilight series and actually there is no competition between harry potter and twilight because competition suites on equal level and they are two different things two different worlds one full of true compassion love and friendship while the other full of nonsense love

message 790: by Kiran (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kiran i agree with Marlette and Jessica

message 791: by Hina (new) - rated it 1 star

Hina Kimberly,

(: And I have two Twilight obsessed friends so it's nothing new. (;

Yes, but the way Bella acts around Edward and when he went away in New Moon she just had a breakdown (I understand that), but then she dives off cliffs just to see him? A bit over the top me thinks.

I find their love very mushy and just gross in my opinion. I just can't see the base in their relationship.

Also Harry Potter definitely does not have poor writing, I think Twilight has more errors in that sense. And the HP hype is still going. Definitely. (:

message 792: by Mare (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mare Hernandez Why everyone insists on comparing the two sagas? I'm sick of hearing and reading the endless articles and reviews about it. Why not conclude that both stories are good and successful. Period. and honestly I don't see the points on which they rely to make comparisons. One is of adventures, and the other is romantic. One is about vampires , and the other is about wizards. I don't think we have to choose between them. We can be fan of both, just like me and be happy.

message 793: by drew (new)

drew I am sorry, but HARRY POTTER WINS HANDS DOWN! NO SWEAT ABOUT IT!

message 794: by drew (new)

drew Kimberly,
Yes, I agree we all have our opinions, and I do respect yours but Twilight is too mushy for me. She will jump off a cliff to see her boyfriend again (?!?!?) and her family and friends are being replaced by the Cullens. Harry Potter, to me, is more thrilling and not so mushy (Which I like). J.K. Rowling has had more experience then Stephenie Meyer. If Meyer comes out with another, better book that I like, I will like her a bit more.
Thanks,
Sockkitty

It's a matter of opinion, my word against yours. Harry Potter trumps Twilight anyday, because it's a little more realistic because real men don't sparkle.
