Twilight v. Harry Potter?
HOW????? she starts becoming this freek when edward leaves her she has no stability on her own and makes it look like she would die if she didn't have a guy and basically did
Did anyone consider that Bella's reaction could have just been a metaphor for what most teenage girls think... don't be so negative... if you don't have something nice to say at all, say it in at least a polite way... So I had a thought... the writing in SM is more like how a teen thinks... and HP is not in first person which allows it to have a higher calliber of the language... that was just my thought as I finished HP and I am starting Twilight....
I don't mind the new version of vampires... by "I don't have to settle for normal" I meant that I don't have to settle on Mike if I don't want a Mike. I can search for a Jacob or an Edward. I'm not trying to be Bella, but if I loved a Mike, then to me it won't matter, but if I didn't love him, I wouldn't settle until I found someone that I did love, whether it was with a normal person or not. Did that make any sense??
MOST TEENAGE GIRLS???? i know a thousand teenage girls none r remotely like that. and y would u want to make teenage girls think that it is okay . Harry potter has good descriptions and it's characters are good role models.
Kelsey wrote: "HOW????? she starts becoming this freek when edward leaves her she has no stability on her own and makes it look like she would die if she didn't have a guy and basically did" She didn't make it sound like she was going to die if she didn't have a guy! But she was all alone! She needed someone who really cared about her and it happened to be Jacob! It could have been Jessica or Angela but that would have messed up the fact that Jacob can know about vampire because he is a werewolf! Anyone else wouldn't have been able to find out!
Ivy... that wasn't aimed at you... your posts are very tactfully done... I wasn't trying to make it sound like I was shopping for love... it made sense in my mind, I'm sorry if I didn't articulate my thoughts well.... I think that her reaction is more of a metaphor.... like I said, but I agree that no girl should react like Bella... I have known my fair share of teen girls that think that reacting that way is the only way... I read the books and think that it was a good what not to do... or how to not react when a guy that I think that I am in love with leaves me... (that does not mean that I said that Bella and Edward weren't in love... I think that they were) Sorry again if this isn't well said... I tried the best I can...
but people are making bella there role models. and she is being stupid and whiney . though most people dont think she is she is making kids/teens become like miley cirus
Well I can only speak for myslef and those that I speak to on a regular basis... and we aren't trying to ba anything like Bella... we liked the story for the idea of an impossible romance that worked out... for high school girls that gives us hope and something to daydream about...
but harry potter can be a role model for the kids who do yeah he does sneek around in the first books but doesn't every kid???
Harry does have a lot of good qualities that are good for kids to try to emulate, I'm not disputing that fact... buy Twilight has SOME... not as many as HP but there are still there if you can find them...
also a nother problem i had with twilight is that there were myths about vampires from books and other things but SM ruined those myths... Vampires dont sparkle in the sun they BURN... Vampires dont have super powers then we would be calling the Cullens Super Heroes
I thought it wasn't a bad idea... just different... Harry Potter was a different idea about wizards...
well not really wizards use magic so does harry she just added stuff on SM CHANGED things plus vamps r supposed to b pure evil.
The evil/dark side is there but the decide to be different... I liked that... it wasn't a change... it was a twist...I am in high school so I do get to see my fair share of the girls who do want to be Bella... in more ways than one... I just tend to avoid those ones...
I only read Twilight because a friend recommended it to me (to her surprise, me not having read a bestseller). After some reflections on the book, I realized how Ms. Meyer was able to write things with an addictive quality. I am more impressed with J.K.'s work with Harry Potter. It has a better plot, much more interesting characters than "hot","perfect","powerful" vampires and secrets that will keep readers interested. Twilight only allows the readers to feel the emotions of the ever-so-freakin' boring Bella for her ever-so-perfect boyfriend Edward, I was simply surprised of myself to have wasted money on a set of the books only to find out I wouldn't be reading them as much as I did read the Harry Potter books (which is more than five times). The only thing I have left to say is that the poor girls who are now gushing about how brilliant a work of literature Twilight is, is because they are grateful for Meyer's creation of "HOT" Edward. Blah.
Speak for yourslef... even though my image of Edward is hot, that is not why I love the books... I too have read HP multiple times since it has come out, but the same it true of Twilight. I enjoyed them both for different reasons that have already been stated...
Ivy i am actually schooled at home 2. but i go to a camp in the summer and do many activities. but the twist ruined how vamps r thought of to teens around the world.
Does this remind no one of the steriotypes of people? Like "Oh he's stupid because he is a skateboarder or ganster." Honestly, it could be the same of vampires. And what about dragons? Some people think of them as vile and horrible creatures, yet no one is critising the newer books about good dragons. Dragons have been seen as evil for a long time. The whole world thought this way except for the Chinese. (Don't you dare insult them. Ha ha. My grandmother is Chinese, she was born there.) They thought that dragons brought good luck and such. Couldn't it be the same for vampires? I have been obsessed with comparing myths for years, and it's surprising how many differences there are in the essence of the same being. Your immediate reaction is one way, but it might be another. And I found the site that Bella went to: link: my link text Hopefully that works. Anyways, the majority of the entries are what most people think of as vampires, but there are some that surprise you.About the whole "role-model" and "love" thing, I look up to Bella's bravery for love. You may not understand why she loves him, but I do. True Mike and the other guys were nice, but it just wasn't meant to be. I'm not going to even attempt explaining their love, but merely saying that wouldn't you give your life to save them? I wouldn't settle for someone who loves me, but I don't quite love them back. That would be unfair to myself and them.
About the teen image thing: I don't agree Ivy. At my school, students are rude, immature, brats. They yell in the halls, listen to their ipods in class while the teacher speaks, etc. I don't think we deserve any further respect than that of a stranger unless we've proven our maturity. The respect I think you're talking about can only be acheived through work and being mature. Adults can see who truly are mature and deserve that praise and what-not. So I don't think that that is the issue.
Many people find Bella's actions sick, disgusting, immoral, etc. But she is brave and couragous. I look up to those qualities in her. I would even do most of what she did because I see the reasons behind them. Maybe that's what I like about first person. I understand what Bella was thinking and I agree with most of it. Not all, of course. And SM wasn't trying to say that a girl can't live without a guy. Actually, that is probably going to be my case. (Lara, don't comment on that.) I'll be okay. The point was that nothing can seperate true love if and when you find it. I know I said something like that before, but it's true.
I didn't like that the vampires didn't have a physical weakness, which practically made them invincible unless you were strong as a vampireto kill them.

Autumn... Other than that one comment I agree with you. Maybe not wholehaertedly but you presented your opinion very well and it made sense... I think that people should keep an open mind when dealing with teens and wait to pass judgement until they have spen sometime with the teen... they might surprise you... I don't look up to Bella for a lot but for her tenacity... her willingness to fight for what she loves is what I "look up" to her for...
Ivy wrote: "Autumn, how do you think I feel when people make generalizations about teenagers? I certainly don't act like that and neither do the kids I know (that are my age). Even if there are teens like th..."
Yes what you said makes perfect sense. They DONT know if it's true love and Bella needed to get over that fact this relation ship was like a soap opra i thought and it didn't make sense to me

Ivy... I think that if she was supposed to be with Mike I think more people would be in love with Mike... SM would have made that love seem more than what it was... I think that it was because that it was Edward that was the character that Bella loved that made the millions of girls fall in love with him... we are all just jealous....
ya that doesn't make sense it's like saying everyone should love lets say ummm... Zac efron cuz he is famous
Okay, no praying for me please. I don't want sypathies or anything. The whole point was that I'm not expecting to find true love. If I do, wonderful, if not, I'll be fine. Anway,no praying on my behalf. It just seems so, blah. No offense, but you can't go around saying that someone is in your prayers. I'm sorry, but religion and praying is a touchy subject for me.So maybe I need to be more specific. I'm saying that teens should get a clean slate at the start every time, but if they've proven to be bad, well that's their problem. SM didn't imply that that is what all teens do. Actually, it was quite the opposite. Bella was so concious of the whole getting married at 18, because it is seen as bad. And she didn't want to be thought as a girl still dealing with hormones.
Ivy, the fact that it could have been anyone makes sense. But the point was that it was Edward. Bella loves him in spite of him being a vampire.
And I think what Lara is saying that if Bella was supposed to love Mike, Edward wouldn't have been in the books. Or he would have played a larger role and Bella would love him back. But it was supposed to be Edward, so that's why it played out as it did.
OK. So first, on the subject of wizards. They are human. Even if they weren't technically human, they'd still be human in the literary sense. Like, faults, strengths, all that.
Now onto the subject of vampires. SM changed the legends somewhat, still staying within the basic idea. Lots of authors do this. J.K. Rowling does this. She uses a mythological creature and changes some of the details but still so that they fir within the legend. It's the whole point of legends. And she obviously wanted to use a vampire, that was one of the whole points of her book, and if he were pure evil, the story would be messed up a little, don't you think?
And what sort of lame story is this? Ah - creepy guy at science table really gorgeous and interesting. Oh, Mike, how about going out tonight? Sure I'll marry you.
And another thing - someone said that she makes it seem like girls need guys. Well, maybe they do. And I think the books make it pretty clear that guys need girls too.

Kelsey wrote: "ya that doesn't make sense it's like saying everyone should love lets say ummm... Zac efron cuz he is famous"First of all.... Gag!!!!
Second... that wasn't what I meant... although now that I think about it... for some that might be true... not for me and I guess not you either.... I think that Autumn said it well....
yeah i really dont like but she didn't even know edward and thought him hot cute and was in love with him. yes ik that some people think u can have love at first site but thats dumb you wouldn't a persons personality at first site 4 all u know he could b a potential serial killer.

I believe in taking a deeper look... just because she was physically attracted to him doesn't mean there wasn't a psychological connection as well... she wouldn't have stayed with him if there wasn't...
but looking deeper is different then CHANGING wat things r it's like saying a lion is a herbivore not a carnivore.
Kelsey you pretty much said that Twilight is stupid because teenagers don't really know if they are in love or not! Well I know that's how a lot of teenagers are, but my sister started dating a guy in high school and they said they were in love and now they are happily married with a child! so some teenagers do know when they are in love just like Edward and Bella!
no that isn't wat i am saying i am saying that this book ruins myths, is making the world a place were popular rules, says that looks are good, has wimpy characters, has NO good story line whatsoever and overall SUX
That is not true... maybe for you it is, but not for us all...I thought that the book gave us a new myth to play with, popular only rules if we let it and how does it say that popular rules?? it never says that looks are good except by Rosalie and very few people like her...the characters are good (not HP but they don't have to be...) and the story line is good... if it wasn't people wouldn't read them...
Okay... Twilight is no HP but if it was then we would have too many HP... the suspense is what held me... I agree with you on the fact that she shouldn't have ditched everyone... the overreaction of Bella losing Edward is what made it comparable (plot line) to Romeo and Juliet...
Ivy wrote: "I'm sorry, Autumn, if I offended you by simply saying I would pray for you. Either praying helps or it doesn't; it does not hurt anything. Even so, I apologize.
Okay, everyone is missing my poi..."
I TOTALLY agree with u

I TOTALLY agree with u
And this part is exactly wat i aam trying to say
Actually, Lara, I thought the story line was awful; there was practically no plot! But I kept reading them... Why? Because there was something that kept you reading. Suspense... I believe that even the simplest plotted book having suspense could keep me reading. I'm someone who needs to know what happens; my main wonder: will Bella become a vampire? Or will she be killed (this wasn't likely, but there was a slight chance...)? I actually knew (I had asked someone, so I could finish my Compare and Contrast essay which had Twilight as a component), but I'm a person who needs to know WHY. I didn't quite classify my wondering as a plot; I believe that a GOOD story should have a good protagonist, a good antagonist (which Twilight did not have), a main problem, well developed side characters, and a couple sub-plots. I think that Twilight had some of these components, but they were too weak for me to enjoy. Perhaps I'm too picky about stories, but I want a good ride.

wat double post i was replying and saying i agree with that
You wanted them both to die... there would probably have been a full scale mutiny if SM had let that happen... death of everyone only works by Shakespeare and select others in a horor story....
I think what's more comparable to Harry potter would be the House of night series by P.C Cast. It's Twilight meets Harry Potter! But I would'nt compare those two there is nothing simalar at ALL.
Ivy wrote: "Well, for the people who believe Bella and Edward's love was so strong, wouldn't it have proved that? I actually liked New Moon, except for the end. Edward's off to kill himself, everything seems..."
yes EXACTLY real life wouldn't work that way. REAL life people would die. In real life edward would be dead and the world would celebrate.
yes EXACTLY real life wouldn't work that way. REAL life people would die. In real life edward would be dead and the world would celebrate.
I'm sorry you all felt that way... I was glad that they didn't die because that would have been so final... the ending would have been more like Romeo and Juliet and quite frankly, I can't stand that play...
Kelsey wrote: "yeah i really dont like but she didn't even know edward and thought him hot cute and was in love with him. yes ik that some people think u can have love at first site but thats dumb you wouldn't a ..."Okay, I must bring in the whole "Love at first sight" thing. According to my parents, they met when they were in 7th grade. My mom didn't like my dad, thought he was a troublemaker, which he was. But my dad took one look and BANG! "Oh, wow. I'm gonna marry that girl." And what do you know? When they were 23 they got married, and at almost, 2 days almost, 25 my mom had me. They are still together, and all because of that first sight.
And do you guys remember reading those fairy tales? Or watching them? That's what Twilight is. It's the fairy tale for teens. With extra things for their age. So, of course there is going to be happy ending. And I agree with Lara. Only Shakespeare can pull the tragic ending like that off.
Thank you Brett for saying that you can't compare them. I agree. They are not similar except for being fantasy.
Oh and if it was real life, Harry would be dead as well. And real life doesn't work like that either. So I don't get why you're complaining about that. Please don't assume the whole world would celebrate. A fair portion wouldn't.

IDF u havn't read the last HP book dont read this
not because of the first sight because they finally fell IN love. the first sight she didn't like him at least thats what u just said when she got to know him they fell in love.
No real life does work in there you know how many deaths were in that book that were main characters that people loved lets see i will name a list fred, madeye,Snape, Lupin, and tonks right after they had had a baby, Dumbledore, Dobbie, AND SOOOOOOO many others. All of those charaters had been loved and cared about in twilights war NON of the family members were killed.
Yes ik harry potter came back from the dead. But his world is magical so that CAN happen.

And so is Twilight! There is magic in that as well. Do the werewolves not count as magic? Or the powers that some of the Cullens have?My dad was already in love with her. He had the love at first sight. Edward wasn't in love with Bella at first, and vise versa. She was just curious as to why the Cullens were so different. And he wanted to get away from the smell of her.

How can you compare the great harry potter books to twilight?
Twilight - A dumb, retarded girl who falls in love with a SPARKLY fake vampire.
Harry Pott..."
How is Bella mentally disabled? And he isn't fake because vampires don't exist. Being legend, they can be interpreted in any way the author chooses.
