Autumn According to your opinion. Not everyone agrees. Including myself.

Danielle, thank you for that post. It's nice to read an intelligent analysis of your point of view. It's hard to read a lot of people's comments on this site because quite frankly, they seem to be in another language. They certainly don't make sense in English. I appreciate the time that you put forward to show us your view in a respectful and beautiful way.

Danielle Just want to say thanks for the positive response to my post, I appreciate all the feedback.
I just love both series so much, for different reasons. I feel like people should take more time to say WHY they like or dislike a book or series of books. Then it gives someone who feels the opposite of them some food for thought. All opinions are valid, I just think people need to realize that just because they like one more than the other doesn't mean that everyone else should feel the same way. That's why there's so many different books out there. There's something for everyone.
Both series are wonderful - in my opinion - both have their high points and their drawbacks.
Thanks again!

I think that sounds about right

Autumn I don't care if it was a bestselling novel or not. The Twilight Saga was -in my opinion- the best.

message 557: by Rachel (last edited May 10, 2009 01:22PM) (new)

Rachel I'm a very critical reader, and I'm very picky about the books I love. I write and edit on a continual basis, and look for ways to improve my own writing. Reading certain books makes me want to go out and do something, where others upset me.

Twilight did the latter. I enjoyed the first book when I read it; it entertained me for the three hours that it took to finish. However, I became disgusted with the amount of attention it was receiving, because it doesn't provide us with anything very useful. It was, to me, an entertaining waste of time. The second book was too long for the amount of content. I couldn't get over the terrible writing in the third book. The fact that they got progressively worse instead of better only proves that Meyer was on a deadline and didn't have time to fix the ugly loopholes and repetitions in her books. By the fourth book, I felt like I was reading a rough draft.

The reason I read Harry Potter to begin with was because it was worth a lot of credit in my ninth grade class, back when the fourth book had just come out. When the fifth book came out I was angry because it felt like word-vomit, and one of the characters was identical to one I'd invented in the first grade.

In any case, what I'm trying to say is that neither of the series were my favorite, but I still think that Harry Potter wins this competition. It was well thought-out and the fantasy appeals to a variety of people. Twilight is targeted at teenage girls. It's Meyer's dream, a shallow fantasy about a vampire that in the real world would be considered a stalker. But I guess it's okay to stalk teenage girls when you're an attractive, hundred-year-old vampire.

message 558: by Autumn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Autumn First of all, there is no competition. It just wouldn't work. Second of all, books are like flavors. Some like chocolate ice cream best, some vanilla, others mint. That's just my analogy. Some people see it as a vampire stalker, while others see it more as a modern/fantasy romance. I don't see how people can call it shallow. She never even meant for it to be this huge. And I read largely for entertainmet rather than watch the tube that turns your brain into mush. Not everything has to have a purpose or be educational.

message 559: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara I love you Autumn... and you as well Danielle... you made some very well stated reasons to which I agree whole heartedly... I think that after you have said that we have no more to say... The book that I chose to read depends on my mood and what is going on around me. If I need something faster then I read Twilight, but if I need something that takes a lot of time (but can still be put down... sometimes) I read Harry Potter. They both fill an emotional need for adventure and romance.... it truly does come down to what you prefer... for me it is looking to b be more about romance and I am sorry to say that I am a typical teenage girl who fell in love with Edward... although now I love Emmett just a lot more... Edward still has a place in my heart..

message 560: by Mandy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mandy Just because it is fantasy doesn't mean it is targeted to for the same market. J.K. Rowling was writing a series that the family could enjoy together. Stephenie Meyers's series was for the romance market which is mostly women and teenage girls. The books are also addressing very different lore. Any attempt in the media to lump the series together shows a lack of awareness and appreciation for the brepth and depth of fantasy literature.
I have to agree with an earlier commentator that J.K. Rowling is the better writer.

That is EXACTLY the analogy I was looking for! Ice cream! Something for everyone, right?

Lara And EVERYONE loves ice cream....

message 563: by Mike The Pirate (last edited May 11, 2009 02:43PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Mike The Pirate I'm sorry, there really is no contest. The Harry Potter books paved the way for hundreds of authors, including Stephanie Meyers. If it hadn't of been for Rowling, it is possible that Meyer's books would have past unnoticed. Harry Potter made it cool to read for those people who didn't believe that it was awesome to begin with. One of my favorite authors, Tamora Pierce put it best at the end of her Trickster's Choice series when she said, Rowling showed everybody that kids will read long books.
Twilight is just one of the many many books that Rowling opened the door for (some good, some not so much).
In the end though, none of this matters. What matters is that people are reading either one or both of these series so much that it has alerted the media, and shown that people can find enjoyment when they turn off the tv.

twilight they just say o he's beautiful when Edward is ugly.

message 568: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

I love to re-read just to get back into that world for a while! Stephanie did a superb job writing this fasinating series!!

Hannah So I was madly in love with the Harry Potter series but then I read twilight fell in love with it and now I have a hard time rereadin Harry Potter but I Can read Twilight. Twilight just is more well written for my age

message 572: by [deleted user] (new)

i have never really read harry potter over and over the whole book but most parts i have read like a thousand times. i LOVE those books

message 573: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I enjoyed reading both series. However, my sons fifth grade walls are decorated with quotes from Dumbledore and other Rowling characters because of the wisdom and enduring truth in their words. I can't say the same of the Twilight books.

message 574: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes i think that twilight has more of a... i cant fraze this right but a more of a just fact side to it like when i read it i didn't find quotes in it that just 'stuck' in harry potter i can recite whole parts at a time.

message 575: by [deleted user] (new)

ivy i kinda of thought that whole part with edward leaving was just saying that bella was going to die if edward hadn't been there

message 576: by Lara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lara I think that for laughs you can quote Twilight but more for advice you could quote HP... but it also depends on the situation... That's the way that I am... Everything depends on my mood... maybe that is why I like both series so much... they involve different feelings....

message 577: by [deleted user] (last edited May 13, 2009 09:09AM) (new)

ya totally agreed

message 578: by ATL (new) - added it

ATL twilight is okay- i havent read harry potter yet
and i will...
its just that i used to be obsessed with twilight but the mote i read twilight-haters comments the more i agree with them
twilight characters are cookie-cuts of stereotypes with this day and age
it got boring and completely lame
just BLAH

message 579: by [deleted user] (new)

yes EXACTLY i TOTALLY agree

message 580: by Josey (new)

Josey I believe the Harry Potter series used to be my favorite until I read Twilight. And even at first I was a little skeptical of the whole series. And then Stephenie Meyer realized she had a total hit on her hands and totally snatched this up and ran with it. Then it became totally cool. And you guys should read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. IT IS TOTALLY WICKED.

message 581: by Josey (new)

Josey I only somewhat agree. Yeah, Bella had some issues with the Voltouri and James and Victoria but it was all over with too quickly. When has any problem ever just vanished. But I too am glad they ended up together, now she needs to finish the series from Edwards point of view and then start in on Jacob's side.

message 582: by Carrie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Carrie Haha, this obviously is a controversial topic!!
I very much enjoyed reading both of sets books, both held my complete attention and I found all them 'hard to put down'.
The Twilight saga is defiantly as good as the harry potter books!! :)

Kamberli Oh my goodness! I can't believe I spelled Harry Herry! I hate my spelling errors! Anyways Fatima I guess it's just all a matter of opinion! for me I skipped more of Harry Potter! I read every page in Twilight!

No i'm not nuts. Ur the nutcase Twilight sucks. The story is soo boring tht i wanted to go to sleep in the first chapter.
Yeah and tht kelsey girl is right. there saying all she needs a man to complete ur life.

message 585: by [deleted user] (new)

GO Fatima!!!! you ROCK!!! lol

The twilight series had no story or plot and was a complete bore so basically i am agreeing with Fatima!!!

message 586: by Autumn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Autumn Twilight was fantastic. I can quote more from that than anything else. I don't know any quotes from HP because the "wisdom" (if you can even call it wisdom) doesn't stand out for me. Sure I get the "morals" of it, but there are no particular parts that I remember. Apart from "You fowl, evil little cockroach!" That's it for me.
And it depends on what you find boring. I find sports boring. (No meaness intended) I can't sit and watch football game while others scream at the top of their lungs. And books don't have to have "wisdom" implanted in them. That's not what makes HP awesome. That was only an element that JKR entwined. I read every page of both, yet Twilight is more memerable to me. And I can connect to a human girl better than a wizard. But hey, it's all about the flavors.

yea everything ur saying i totally agree.

I'm one of those people who like to sceam at football... but I think that it depends on what a person is looking for to see what they find... I did not like the book for the soul reason of Edward... I am thinking that I liked the idea and image of Edward... he added charcteristics to the perfect man that I always imagine...

Autumn said that it is all about flavors, she is absolutely correct...

Kamberli Lara (Emmett is MINE!!) wrote: "I think that for laughs you can quote Twilight but more for advice you could quote HP... but it also depends on the situation... That's the way that I am... Everything depends on my mood... maybe t..."
Lara! I think you said it perfectly! For laughs Twilight is better! but for wisdom Harry Potter is better dending on the situation! I also think that HP is very funny and that twilight can have wisdom to!

message 590: by Autumn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Autumn Thank you you Lara and Kamberli.
Ivy, I was just saying that not every book has to have wisdom and morals to be good. And Harry is not human. Wizard, remember? Not a muggle. Hermoine (dang, can't spell her name), said that to Malfoy in Prisonor of Azkaban. Parts were quite boring, the beginning especially in most.
I love Twilight for more than Edward, too. Although he is one of my favorite's. I like all the vampires that you meet throughout the series. Like Ben and Elazear and Kate. OOOOOOo and Garrett. I also like the sheer impossibility of the romance and how it still works out. It's funny, and entertaining. So is HP, but in a different way.

message 591: by Justin (new)

Justin WaringCrane haha comparing twilight to harry potter are you kidding me?
the only 'thrilling' thing for me in twilight was when i turned the last page..talk about a thrill, man.

Mila Boucheva I want to start off with thanking everyone for their comments. It's very interesting to read everyone's opinions.
I don't think that the Twilight saga can begin to compare to Harry Potter. I was amazed to learn that EW (and whoever else) even tried to make the comparison. Just because both are best-sellers aimed at the younger audience doesn't mean they are of the same caliber.
The twilight books are what I like to call "an airplane read." It's an easy read and has absolutely no depth. It's perfect for those who read without giving much thought or deliberation to the novel/plot/etc. Meyer's characters and plot had absolutely no dimention to them. There were too many inconsistencies with the plot. The whole series was very predictable and excruciatingly draw-out; The only thing I found exciting while reading was the anticipation of when they were actually going to insanely kinky monkey-sex. The book was linear and boring.
Her message to young girls was absolutely despicable. She portrayed an image of a helpless, selfless (to say the least) young female, and a dominant, over-protecting male with anger issues. Really? The book was good for teenage girls, lonely women who are seeking a cheap-thrill, and people who don't read too often (so they have nothing to compare the book to).
Harry Potter, on the other hand, is a classic. Although it's intended for a younger audience, the book is timeless and has universal themes. The plot is intricate, the characters are well-developed, and it has good morals. Rowling had been planning the HP series nearly (if not more) than a decade before actually writing it, and it really shows.

soooo... cheap thrill vs. universal themes?? hmm...

Mila Boucheva PS: I agree with FAITH, also

Mila Boucheva Faith wrote: "comical! ludicrous! preposterous! outrageous! absurd! laughable! idiotic! irrational! illogical! imbecilic! asinine! ridiculous! "

I can go above and beyond if I want to... Kamberli thank you for your addition to my view... it clarifies mine a little better...

SM was not giving a message in her books. She had no intention for any message. She just wanted to write out this story that she dreamt about. If you detected one, that was your brain creating it, not her. And what "dispicable" message are you trying to twist from it? If there is any message at all, it's that love thrives no matter what obsticles are thrown at them, be it difficulties with physical needs like blood, the clumsy girl, his anger, or any flaw they have. Nothing could part them. In a way, her being a normal girl, well sort of, shows that love goes beyond flaws. And that's the inspiring bit for any girl, not just lonely ones.

And what is it with everyone and morals? Maybe I don't want morals being brain washed into me. Maybe I want some bad stuff, huh? Not that Twilight is immoral, but honestly, morals get sooooooo boring after awhile. Especially when your family is extremely moral.

Kamberli Autumn O'Shea Swan, I don't agree with you when you said that SM wasn't giving a message in her books! Yes she did write it after a dream that she had a few years ago! but that doesn't mean that she didn't put an untintional message in there! She could have gone back and fixed things when she realized that maybe she could get published! I think that both books are amazing! and both authors have amazing imaginations!

message 599: by Autumn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Autumn Kamberli, she said in several interviews that she didn't intentionally put a message in it. That doesn't mean that messages can't be extracted from them though.

Zimmy This is the most STUPID question ever asked.
How can you compare the great harry potter books to twilight?
Twilight - A dumb, retarded girl who falls in love with a SPARKLY fake vampire.
Harry Potter - TOO amazing to describe.
