Is The Mortal Instruments series worth my time?

I don't know if this is truly an off topic conversation - but I don't see a folder for general fantasy discussion.

Anyway - City of Bones, the first volume in The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, is coming up in my to read list, and I want to know if I should bother. I'm not a YA hater by any means. I honestly enjoyed Harry Potter (and I understand Clare rose to fame through fellow HP fans?). But I read the description of the book, and I'm afraid it might just be a HP/Twilight clone. It certainly sounds like it might be.

I want to know if this book was written for a general audience like HP or a mushy teenie-bopper (and my wife) audience like Twilight.

Actually, City of Ashes is neither HP or Twilight. It's very different from both of them. Give them a try, however IMO Jace is a total douche. So you've been warned. XD

Is it YA that can be enjoyed by an adult audience that isn't interested in the kind of angsty teeny-bopper romance that seems so prevalent in YA fantasy these days?

It's rated high, which is why I want to give it a shot, but then, Twilight is rated high too. And just...well you know: barf.

I couldn't get into COB at all. Reviewers keep saying it has a Star Wars twist, and I tried, but couldn't get past about a third of the book. It didn't hold my interest. To me, it seemed like it was written for a younger audience than Twilight.

oh..right the Star Wars twist..yes there is. I have yet to read Twilight, so I can't compare :)

I borrowed Cassie Clare's first book from my neighbors daughter. I enjoyed my read through, though it wasn't anywhere near my favorite, but after I finished I started picking holes in the plot and the characters and then I noticed that the main character shares her name with the author ... and I found that just a little creepy. It wasn't at all bad, but it definitely -felt- like fanfic.

If you like fanfic, go for it. If you don't, I'd say to pass.

After reading your comments, and a great deal of the book's reviews on this site (taking into consideration the apparent age, sex, and teeny-bopperitude of its positive reviewers, not to mention the percentage of them that take time out of their review of THIS book to rave about how good Twilight is), and reading a couple of paragraphs excerpted from the book itself, I'm convinced I'll hate it.
