This is also another notorious film known for some pretty disturbing scenes. I saw it over the weekend as well and yup, I was on somewhat of a foreign film binge. This one is by French director, Gaspar Noe.
Before A Serbian Film, Irreversible was being hailed as the shocker amongst film fans. The film has harrowing scenes of extreme violence and rape. One particularly disturbing scene lasted all of 9 mins uncut. It was brutal and horrible -- apparently many people walked out of theatres in disgust, but for me I stuck it out. I think it is necessary to not gloss over horrific acts of violence. I liked that it showed just how violating and exploitive such an act is against another human being.
The films stars Vincent Cassel of BLACK SWAN fame and his wife Monica Belucci. They play lovers in the film and their story is told in reverse (so the natural end of the film is the start and the natural start of the film is the end). Sounds a little mind boggling (and yeah the cinematography -- how the scenes are shot -- in some parts of the film was certainly that), but it was actually very well done over all.
