Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Hello. I just joined and so far am I really enjoying this. I am a constant reader and currently enrolled for my MLS (Masters of Library Science) and I feel not many people enjoy my love of books and once I found this site I thought my dreams have come true. Here I can say what I want and have debates with those who understand me or at least try to.

I try to get my friends involved in these sorta things I got a few but none as die-hard as me.

I just want to say hello and can't wait to get to know all of you.

Hello Donna. Welcome to the group. I think you'll find you are definitely among like-minded friends here.

Macy | 155 comments Hi Donna! Don't worry, we are probably as die-hard as you are!

message 4: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Oh good. It's nice to know I am no alone. ;)

message 5: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Hi Donna! Good luck with your MLS. I have high hopes of getting mine in a few years. :-)

message 6: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments It is a lot of work. More than expected but it's what I wanna do so I gotta suck it up!! Good luck to you!

message 7: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Which program are you going through? Mine will be through Kent St.

message 8: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Welcome, Donna! Good luck with your MLS. What part of NYC are you in? I grew up in the Bronx.

message 9: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I am in Rockaway Beach Queens. Ans I am getting my MLS in CUNY Queens college

message 10: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I think when I start to attempt mine, I'll be applying for a library clerk position somewhere so they'll pay for my MLS. :-)

message 11: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I was going to focus on Archives but now I might consider Media Stduies which means I would have to go for another Masters in Education so I am still thinking on that.

But this is my 3 semester and I am going part time so I think I have a little time to figure it out.

message 12: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I am currently a Records Manager and my job just started to pay for mine It is great. I thin kyou have to work there for at least 6 moths before they pay for your education.

Kirsty (kirstyreadsandcreates) | 610 comments Hi Donna, welcome to the group!

message 14: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Thank you

message 15: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I'd like to be a Research Librarian, but since those are such coveted positions, I might have to put in a several years until I have the seniority.

message 16: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Good Luck to you. No offense but that is one class I dread. It is a lot of work but yuo have to want and and be good at it so if you are they more power to you. It is not for everyone but then again neither is Archives ;)

message 17: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Yeah, I'd probably enjoy Archives as well. Give me an opportunity to put my OCD to good use. :-)

message 18: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Cynthia seems to be our group's resident librarian, so I'm sure she'll be able to offer some excellent insight to this discussion.

message 19: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments LOL.

I worked in one for a year and loved it. It's nice to lock yourself up in a room to get paid to do what you love.

message 20: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I would just get paranoid about someone coming in and messing up 'my' system. :-)

message 21: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) You'll love these...I picked them up so I could further add to my obsessive compulsive nature.

Library Check Out Book

Home Library Kit

Embosser (I have the single initial plate and the 'From the Library of' plate...I feel the need to mark my books)

message 22: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Oh I do love it!! I just brought the Books to Check out Journal and the embosser. THX!!!

message 23: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I think I should get the library kit too ;)

message 24: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I went through a phase where I had to brodart all my books. I'm sick. :-)

message 25: by Val (new)

Val Nichols | 159 comments Greetings, Donna! This group is obviously sending out some incredibly strong signals to bring so many like-minded people together. No, you are definitely not alone.

Congratulations on going toward your MLS!

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Thank you. So far so good.

message 27: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Welcome Donna! I'm so glad that you stumbled upon our group. I've been here since January and am completely addicted.

MLS question for Donna and Charity - What environment do you want to work: university, public library, etc.

message 28: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Great question, Jen! I would like to work in a public library, mainly because I find the library systems here in central Ohio to be outstanding. However, I have given thought to getting my teaching certification and working in one of the school libraries. Not sure yet, but leaning toward the public library system.

message 29: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I would love to work in a musuem Archive (as I have don before) but I am actually considering school librarian but as school progresses I thus will figure it out

message 30: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Ahh Jersey!!! my other home!!

message 31: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
This may seem strange, but I never realised you had to go to school to work in the library. I mean, I knew there were jobs within the field that required them, but wow. Perhaps I shouldve dug deeper when I was majoring in Media.. i could have taken a minor in Library Sciences.....

Damn.

Welcome Donna, as you can see here, we are full of love for the newbies and for each other. Debate away, you will find tons of people who would love to chat away the day regarding books :)

message 32: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments So I see.
And yes I didn't know you needed a masters either but as I am taking the courses now I found that you reallyDO need a lot of education to be a librarian. But with that degree you can also be a media specilaist, records manager, archivist and cataloger.

but thanks for your welcome!!!

message 33: by Charity (last edited Aug 05, 2008 01:19PM) (new)

Charity (charityross) Lori-
Well, to be considered a Librarian, you have to have your Master's (MLS), but you don't have to have your MLS just to work in a public library.

message 34: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) The one big draw for me (aside from all the books, of course) are the hours. I can actually work around my kids' school schedules. I think it will be a great job.

message 35: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments That is the main reason why I am considering being a media specialist.

message 36: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) You are so right, Donna. It is a lot more work than one would think. Keep me updated. I'd love to hear how it's going. It might motivate me to get off my ass and register.

message 37: by Donna (last edited Aug 05, 2008 01:31PM) (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments it took me sometime but I finally did it so I wish you all the luck!!

message 38: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) Ditto.

Not sure if you ever read chick lit...but when I was going through my big chick lit phase, I read this cute book about a librarian.

A Little Change of Face

I LOVE NYC! I'm from England but go to NYC every year - love, love, love it!

message 42: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments So far so good. I have taken a course on Chinese culture and the cultural Revolution and it is very interesting thus far but I am not that far into it.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) Donna, have you read many books on China? I have read quite a few - I'm fascinated by the country (old and new). I can recommend some others if you want to read any more.

message 44: by Donna (last edited Aug 06, 2008 07:57AM) (new)
