Rebekkila | 11 comments I own several of the Reacher series and the Preston/Child books. I don't own the first of either series but have the second of both coming up in Mount TBR. Do I need to read Killing Floor before Die Trying and Relic before Reliquary? I have so many books that I feel a bit guilty about going to the library.

Dawn | 1371 comments LOL...some of us are Read In Order advocates...however...I would say that in a pinch, which you are in, I'd go ahead and read Die Trying. An out of order Reacher is better than no Reacher. I haven't read the Preston books, so don't know how much they build on each other.

You better duck and cover, we have some people that will only read in order and others that don't think its necessary. Both groups can be very vocal lol

Rebekkila | 11 comments I am usually all about reading series books in order ever since my Nancy Drew days. Some series like The Hunger games I couldn't imagine reading out of order, others you can muddle through any way you want the Spenser books come to mind. I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be in left field.

I am a firm believer in reading in any order you please, so out of order reading is perfectly acceptable with me. Unrepentant Out of Order Readers unite as the UOOOR's here and live happily among the RIO's! That said, starting off with the powerful first book, Killing Floor is IMHO very important. I then read book three and then book two happily and continue to read the Reacher books in order only because I can't wait to read the next new one each time. ;)

Sherry | 4517 comments all right. i go away for 1 night- 1 night, people- and come back to a thread about RIO????
don't listen to ann, she's a rebel.
you definitely read in order. the only exception is if you honestly didn't know that a book was a part of a series until after you read it.
there shouldn't even be this much discussion.
;)

Rebekkila | 11 comments Ok, looks like I am going to be unfaithful to my overflowing bookshelf with 2 library books. I was swayed so easily.

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments Life is WAY too short to worry about the order in which I read books!! I used to be RIO, but not anymore! If I find a book in a series and it sounds good to me, I read it! If it's the 1st one, that's fine. But if it's the 5th, the 10th or the 12th, that's fine, too!

Brakedrum | 1203 comments I am mostly a RIO, but when someone tells me of an unknown author, a least to me, I will go to the library and check out the books I can get. Many times, when doing this, I'll only find a few of that author's writings. If I find him interesting, then I'll check used book stores or now a days on Amazon.

Melodie (melodieco) | 3679 comments I had a very dear friend who passed away almost 2 years ago from a brain aneurysm. One minute she was shopping in Walmart and the next minute she was gone. She was a reader, too. She read whatever struck her fancy at the moment. I had become less of a RIO prior to her passing, but afterward I adopted her mindset. If I have a book that sounds wonderful sitting right in front of me that I would love to read, why wait until I can round up the 1, 2 or 5 before it?? The same thing that happened to her could happen to me.....or you, and we've deprived ourselves of what potentially could have been a great pleasure for absolutely no logical reason.

Carol/Bonadie (bonadie) | 9483 comments Oh boy. When I saw this thread and all the posts I thought "Rebekkila has opened up a can of worms.."

I am a confirmed RIO because I don't like to have the plots of previous books spoiled, and you never know which authors are mindful of that and which aren't. There are so many good books to read that waiting for the first/next book isn't a problem, on to the one I have that I want to read as much, and there is always one.

So it's no surprise that I will say wait to get Killing Floor, but I will also say that it is a real treat because you have never seen a character like Reacher, and how he is introduced in Book One is masterful.

Ann (annrumsey) | 16927 comments Melodie: I am sorry about your friend. Very well said, and not just because I agree with you.

Shomeret | 1490 comments If I read every series in order there are many that I'd stop reading after the first one and never get to the books that would interest me more. Although I do RIO sometimes, mostly I'm a UOOOR.

message 21: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo | 4354 comments I try to read in order whenever possible. Because way back in the stone ages when I didn't do that with certain authors I find now that I kept reading their books I know there is past books of their's on my bookcase in HC. And really it's like getting a tooth fulled (haha) trying to go back to read them. My thought is if you know what happens laster why read the ones in the past. I know don't throw tomatoes at me. Even if that is in my when saying RIO it just has ruined books for me too many times. Like catherine coulter yes I went out of order and read the latest book before the previous 3 books. Now I'm living to regreat that. I did it because it was a weekend at the shore (sun, sand, ocean, etc) and the library book was there giving me the chance to open it. Now it took how many days to get though Double take. And I still have Tailspin and Knock Out to read before the new book comes out I believe in June. Both in Hc (library sale) Then yes I will be caught up in that series not like James Patterson which has back series books still on my bookcase taking up much needed room. So I say "RIO" Oh if you do out of order by error or if the first books are just so hard to locate then it's okay. My beginning Lee child books are at the shore I've been trying to get my sister to read them for years. That reminds me need to see if I have the next book I have to read of his. Haven't read him in awhile.
