Laura | 1 comments I really wanted to like Breaking Dawn. I really hoped Stephenie Meyer would not get caught up with the fame and fans and try to make EVERYONE happy. But, she did and it was a HUGE let down.
In thinking about it, the fourth book should never have been published. Bella easliy could have been turned into a vampire at the end of book three or even two for that matter. I really feel like steph wanted the money and the publishing house wanted the victory lap.
The first couple hundred pages were ok. The wedding was romantic and fun-a little rushed- and the honeymoon was a pretty interesting. But, as soon as Bella got pregnant it all went downhill. fast.
It was totally unbelievable. Carlisle has been around for hundreds of years and he had no idea a human could get pregnant by a vampire? The baby was half human but she was at full term in like two weeks? Charlie and Renee didnt break down the door to try and see her? It's like her parents fell off the planet.

Then we had to read a whole book from Jacob's perspective. Most of the book was about the impending doom of an attack from the pack and the attack never happened. Then everyone was sure bella would die and that never happened. Then the baby arrived and everything was perfect. Stephenie wanted to make the jacob fans happy so she had Jacob imprint on the baby. Way weird. The baby had teeth???

The part where Bella turned into a vampire was interesting. I thought Stephenie did a good job describing what it would be like. But, I thought it was just too good to be true. She was a perfect Vampire, her physical relationship with Edward was even better, Charlie handled it ok-ABSURD and we never really heard from Renee again.
Then the threat from Italy (again) and everyone prepared for a battle that never happened. We all thought everyone would die and they no one of consequence ever did. It was drama after drama that ended perfectly.

Stephenie knew that she had written herself into a corner and she had to turn Bella into a vampire, but she wanted an excuse to do it. So, she had Bella on her death bed and in order to save her she had to make her a vampire. It was as if Bella did not have a choice. She knew that Bella would be giving away motherhood by being a vampire, so she got her pregnant first. She knew that Bella would have a difficult time having a relationship with her parents if she wanted to drink their blood, so she gave Bella the amazing gift of control and Charlie was ok with the fact that his daughter was a monster...
I am not sure how i wanted it to end. I told myself that Breaking Dawn was a young adult novel and therefore could be totally unrealistic and absurd. But, i have read fabulous young adult novels before:island of blue dolphins, the giver and I did not feel cheated or patronized.

Alexis (aesquibel25) How would you have written it? She wrote what she wanted and it wasn't what everyone thought it would be and for that I give her credit. SHe IS the author you know. I honestly can't see Stephanie just doing it for the money. I imagine her with more integrity then that. She wanted it to work out so she found a way to make that happen. I admire her writing and eventhough I was a little surprised by the book I still think Stephanie is an amazing writer. I actually think it could have been even better if she could have made it into two books because there was so much in this one that she could have built off of.

Alexis (aesquibel25) I guess you can't please everyone though. I'm sure she knew that might happen what with everyones own theories, expectations, and versions before the book was even released.

message 4: by Marissa (new)

Marissa I agree that it could have been made into two books. Then there maybe could have been a fight or at least a little more action. I agree that Jacobs part of the book was dumb, but overall, I loved it.

Julie (onetrooluff) I don't think she tweaked the storyline in order to please the fans. She has said numerous times that it ended the way she always had in mind (once she knew she was writing sequels, which she didn't know when she was writing Twilight), and she has also said that she likes happy endings! I think she wrote what she felt was the proper ending for her characters, who she loves.

I also don't believe for a second that she is doing any of this for money. She is extremely passionate about her writing and her characters. I really do think that she went to 4 books just because she didn't feel she could properly wrap things up in 3; writers do this all the time - look at the Eragon series, or George R.R. Martin and his Game of Thrones series. She has said from the start that she was just hoping to pay off her mini-van and was flabbergasted by how much she got for her book deal. She's set for life, her kids are set for life, what more could she want?

Katie (labellavita575) | 6 comments I liked the book, it was exciting, and it WAS different, but what do you expect the whole series is different.

not everything needs to make sense, and irina died, so it didnt end perfectly.

Laura, pretty much word for word, I agree with you! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings on this book. I am glad I am not alone out here!

message 8: by Bella (new)

Bella | 1 comments i totally agree with laura on most of it.
i can't say i can judge steph on the whole money thing but breaking dawn was definately the weakest book in the series and the twilight series deserved SUCH a better ending other than "happily ever after". i was totally disappointed. i kept reading waiting for it to get good and it just... DIDNT. also we've seen the volturi like a gazillion times now--- i think that got way overdone and overplayed. i dont know exactly what i wanted... i guess i wanted something heartrenching or at least something that made SENSE.

i think its cute jacob imprinted on renesmee (which is a dumb name, i might add), but i totally saw it coming! *sigh*

i'm rooting for midnight sun.

message 9: by Colleen (new)

Colleen I agree with both of you. I'm still not sure how I feel about the baby's name either. One part of me is glad that everyone ended up in a good position in the end (even Leah, to some extent-- she gained a stronger friendship with Jake, and shed some light on her own sad story), but then again, it was a little surreal that the ending was THAT happy. I don't know what I want anymore :P But I think in the end, Steph was writing the story the way that she wanted, and I totally respect that. Those characters probably became such a dear part of her, she couldn't bear to leave them high & dry in the end :) I think that I'm one of those people that can't really be comfortable with everything being so perfect... it makes it less real for me. Maybe after a few re-reads I'll feel differently.

message 10: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Oh, yes, I just read Katie's post... Irina's death did mar the 'perfect' ending somewhat. I guess if they had retaliated and destroyed the Volturi, it would have been harder for the Cullens to rest knowing that they basically engaged a vamp-coup.

message 11: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (nickjj1000) | 13 comments I think the jacob part was dumb. I mean i and i bet alot of other people wanted to see how Bella reacted to the pain, NOT whqat jacob thought. Oh well

message 12: by Lulliannie (new)

Lulliannie (lullisbooks) I agree with you Colleen on the 'too happy' part. Rebecca, I got to say that while I did rush through Jacob because I found it boring, at the end it seemed...funny. I would have liked to see more of Bella's pain, but I wouldn't have wanted to miss that part with Jacob. The guy is hilarious! I especially enjoyed his chapter titles.

message 13: by Janepage (new)

Janepage I didn't really like Jacob before, but after seeing his point of view, I do! He thought the funniest things sometimes! I don't think the book could have been written from entirely Bella's point of view, because we never would have known all about Edward struggling with Bella's pain and stuff.
