Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments Hey SMFers...What book are we reading first? And when will we discuss it?

Since many of us get our books from the library instead of purchasing them, AND there is often a waitlist, I'd like to recommend that we NOT read new releases. By picking something a bit older, we can increase the liklihood that our libraries have copies and used (read cheaper) copies are available for sale.

Looking forward to reading with y'all!
~Vickie

Jennifer | 31 comments I like that idea since I will most likely be getting my book from the library as well! I also use half.com a lot to get books since you can purchase books so inexpensively. I agree that we need to perhaps set a goal date to be done reading the book so we can discuss! But first we need to pick a book! I'm open to most anything. :)

Btw, I love this site! I didn't know about it prior to Kathleen's posting!

I'm with you Vickie The books I am reading are ones that a coworker gave me (a whole box full!) so they are older. I am totally open to sending mine on to anyone.
If someone wants to pick a book we can all go to library or other cheap resources and get a copy. There is just soooo much to choose from that I don't know where to start except the box my friend gave me.
:-)

Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments Hmmmmm....where to begin?

How about this...

Somebody pick a category (Mystery, Chick Lit, Vampire Romance, Humor, Animal memoir, Self-Help, Former Bestseller, Paranormal, an Oprah Pick, Young Adult Novel, Spiritual/Inspirational, Historical Fiction, Horror, whatever)

Once someone picks a category, the next person to post should pick a book and tell us what we are reading.

The third person to post then sets a deadline for us to finish it and begin our discussion.

In this way, nobody has the burden of making all the choices and somebody else can pick each part next time.

Would that work for all y'all?

message 6: by Skena (new)

Skena Megahed | 32 comments I'm not sure if it's mystery but I have a book called "secret smile" by Nicci French
is it ok ?
I'm sooooooooooooooo excited :)

message 7: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments Okay..."Secret Smile" by Nicci French (mystery/thriller/chick lit combo) it is.

I'm off to find a copy in our library system. Somebody set us a deadline, please.

message 8: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Jarvis (ariyana9501) | 31 comments Okay, found a copy at my library, so when it's available, I will pick it up. :)

Also, I have no idea what to post as a deadline!!!!!

message 9: by Skena (new)

Skena Megahed | 32 comments my first book club :) yaaaaaaaaaaaay
I'm not sure how it gonna work . will we read the whole book then discuss it or what ?

message 10: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments I think that will be up to our Hostess. What do you think Kath?

In the past, when I've been part of online reading groups, we could post as we read as long as we did not spoil it for others. (The "No Spoilers" rule.)

So for instance...it would not be okay to post anything about the plot until we all finished reading it. But it would be okay to post personal reactions, like whether or not you are enjoying it, which characters you are feeling an affinity for or asking someone to PM if they have read a certain chapter because you are confused and need clarification.

For example:

NOT OK to post: "I can't believe Cindy murdered Chad in Chapter 16!"

OK to post: "I just finished reading Chapter 16 and oh wow! If anyone else has gotten that far please PM me!"

NOT OK to Post: "What a cheesy ending...I can't believe Bob was the stalker."

OK to post: "I'm about half way through and I think I've figured out who the stalker is. I won't name names, but I'm just wondering if y'all think you know who it is?"

OK to post: "This one is moving so slowly. Is anyone else getting bored?"

OK to post: "Whoa...this one has some steamy sex scenes. Blushing in Iowa!"

OK to post: "Wow, I'm not even half way through and I'm feeling exhauseted from this emotional intensity."

Would that work okay for you Kath?

Works for me - I love the outline

PS I just ordered my copy from Amazon - only $4.00 shipped by buying a used one and I used my swagbucks amazon GC as well

Looking forward to receiving it and jumping in on the conversation

We only have one library in town and it's on the opposite end of town from where we live. So I am really loving the deal on amazon

Just added a folder for the Book Reviews and a separate thread for our Book one disscussion

This first one will be a good tester of how we want to make it all come together.

Dawn Swingle | 69 comments Okay, I managed to find the group and join, good first step, LOL!

Now I have to reserve the book at the library.

Will there be a time limit?

message 14: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Swingle | 69 comments Cool, my library has it on the shelf, I'll pick it up next week!

message 15: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (kathbrat) | 44 comments Mod
Since it's looking like we need another week for everyone to get the book Maybe we can try for the end of the month? Not sure if that is enough time. I would also suggest we go ahead and pick the next book and have it in a "que" if you will so that we can reserve/order the book.

Anyone with suggestion for next genre?

message 16: by Skena (new)

Skena Megahed | 32 comments I love the Chick Lit books . can it be our next genre?
as I said before I already got the book (thank God) but I'm glad that you'll have the book in a week cause I need time to finish the novel that I'm currently reading
love you all :)

message 17: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments Okay, so Skena has picked "Chick Lit" as our second topic...I'm more of a paranormal, urban fantasy, sci-fi, mystery kinda girl, so I don't know what the good Chick Lit books are.

My friend just finished "The Undomestic Goddess" by Sophie Kinsella and said it was really cute and funny.

Anybody a regular reader of the genre who knows of something even better?

message 18: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (kathbrat) | 44 comments Mod
Not my genre of knowledge either. I say let's go for the friend recommendation. :)
Any one else have any suggestions?

message 19: by Skena (new)

Skena Megahed | 32 comments sorry for choosing an unpopular genre . if no one like it .we can choose another one

message 20: by Vickie (new)

Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments It's not unpopular at all Skena...in fact, it is what most of my friends prefer and besides, I joined this group in part to get out of my own bookshelves and into all of yours.

Since our leader says let's go for it, let's tentatively try Sophie Kinsella's "Undomestic Goddess"

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33...

I'll go next door and get my neighbor's copy and tuck it aside for when we finish Secret Smile.

In between OLS - SMF reads, I can get a fix of blood, vengence and sex from my own shelves *wink*

message 21: by Skena (new)

Skena Megahed | 32 comments sounds like a good book . I'll try to find it soon

message 22: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Jarvis (ariyana9501) | 31 comments I'll get on the list at the library for that one too!

Posted the Thread for Book Two.
We can pick number three at the first of the month and try to stay ahead on the selections so we can have more time to obtain our copies.

I am enjoying this venue - Happy Reading! :)

message 24: by Skena (new)

Skena Megahed | 32 comments can we have only one book for each month . I mean secret smile for January &Undomestic Goddess for February& choose a new one for March ........
to let the chance for the slow readers (like me) & for those who get their books late (like me in the second book :) )to catch up .and also to get the chance to read other books between the group's
ok?

Veronica - would you like to start thinking/picking for March/Three :0) Time runs out so quickly so might be good if we keep a bit ahead on the selections.

Jenn - You can be April/Four
Dawn - You can be May/Five
I will pick June/Six
Then if nobody else joins in, I will just keep rotating Hope this is agreeable to all

Vickie (tangee43) | 93 comments Hey I just noticed that Mark has joined our reading group! Awesome...hopefully our token male will pick something with a little murder, mayhem, blood, violence, sex and/or gore when it is his turn!

And whoa...just saw Mark's profile pic. Did y'all know he was such a cutie? You go Mark! Read on with your cute self!

message 33: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (kathbrat) | 44 comments Mod
okay Let's add Mark for July/Seven
Deb for August/Eight
Rotate again.
Participation in all the books is NOT required just "read" as you like and jump on in :)

message 34: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Jarvis (ariyana9501) | 31 comments Okay......awesome! I have a great idea for a book! It's called "The Slow Moon" by Elizabeth Cox. Would you all be okay with that one?

Be sure to remind me if/when it's my turn!
I'm one of those "need a nudge" people because I read so fast and it's really not unusual for me to be involved with more than one book. Especially when it comes to series I'm devouring *LOL*

Ahhh, I wonder where you got the idea for this book?
I knew you'd enjoy it, Veronica...it's such an awesome story and Cox's near poetic description of such dramatic events left me breathless. I have to be honest and say I hated parting with it (only because I enjoy adding great books to my collection), but I could just envision you wrapped around this story....

I look forward to hearing thoughts about this one.

message 42: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 31 comments Okay, just realized I'm suggesting a read for book #4/April. :-)

How about Safe Haven, by Nicholas Sparks? It's been on my "to read" list for a while now.

message 43: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Swingle | 69 comments Okay, so I'm a little slow to this as I've not had a lot of time to read of late. Is it okay to skip a book, or read them out of order?

Whichever ones you want to participate in is just fine. I read two first, and then one so I already started out of order.
