RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Interesting article about a local district that's trying to weigh the benefits of either librarians or Spanish teachers in elementary schools. Now, I know the ideal answer would be "both"...but as they don't seem to be able to afford both, what do you think?

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments librarians. while languages are important they should be secondary to help in the library.

Phil | 11837 comments Librarians help all students. Spanish teachers only teach those who take Spanish.

There can be creative solutions for the library, though. Some schools here share a certified (certifiable? hehe) librarian. The main librarian is in charge of setting policies, training new personnel, etc., and has (lower paid, non-credentialed) staff at each school to implement/maintain the libraries.

Tough call. Wealthier families can hire language tutors; everyone could visit a public library.

My own school can not afford either, but we will need to find funds for a librarian before we can be fully accredited. I guess that means the accreditation boards have determined that a library is more important than foreign language study for elementary students.

Janice (jamasc) I can't imagine a school without a librarian. I can't imagine a school having a Spanish teacher instead of a librarian. One is an option; the other a necessity.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments we have two county schools here who "share" a teacher who teaches a chinese language class. mornings at one and afternoons at the other. not sure we need a chinese class at all but this seems to be a logical decision. i will say that the librarian at the school where i mentor is a crab. what a meanie. i don't think she is making kids love books at all. a sour puss face and a jack boot mentality. we make fun of her behind her back. errrr....i mean the kids do

Did they stick you with the kids whose hobbies are shoplifting and pyromania?

Jammies Librarians by a landslide!

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Librarians! The Spanish classes are just a proposal, clearly an unfunded one, not teachers already in place.

Librarians are essential staff. If they want Spanish in those schools, they need to find money in the budget somewhere else.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Really?! Like there's any question about this?

Librarians, duh. Now if we were given a choice between English teachers and librarians, that'd be a whooole other story.

No it wouldn't. Still, librarian.

Maybe...

you know it. i get all the 3rd graders with tattoos, AC/DC tee shirts, skater shoes and pocket knives. we meet in the detention room so they don't have to relocate. my fav line came from Jason who asked me this year "do you really use math in real life?"

Just kidding!!! Librarians, of course.

I saw a bumpersticker the other day that said, "It will be a beautiful day when schools have all the funds they need and the Navy has to hold a bakesale to buy new battleships." :)

message 18: by Karen (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments librarians by a landslide as far as I am concerned. However, Spanish is the unofficial 2nd language in a great many states. In Manchester,NH 30 yrs ago you heard french-canadian in certain neighborhoods. Now in those same neighborhoods it's spanish.

message 21: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Librarian. Our schools don't offer Spanish until High School. In elementary and middle school, you can only take languages as a "club" activity, that meets before or after school. Results may vary.
