Anybody Heard About Mark Twain Rewrite?!

Hi everybody. I'm new. Yesterday, I heard about a story that shocked me, and it concerns a classic Mark Twain novel(s). However, I'm not part of a classics group. This group seemed like an awesome suggestion. So, here it goes.....
Yesterday, watching the evening news, I heard that a recent college professor (I think), has rewritten The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
The rewritten version eliminates the infamous n-word, and also takes out "injuns". The n-word is being replaced with slave.
In my opinon, I believe that this is absolutely ridiculous. While I'm a human rights activist and very open-minded, I don't believe that this is helping any towards the fight against racism.
Rewriting classics is not a way to make people see what went on, and what continues to go on. Not only that, but the young people using the term in the book did not mean it in a derogatory way.
If people feel the need to start rewriting literature, then what about other classics like To Kill A Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men, or Roots? And what about all of the other racist problems: anti-Semitism, anybody of non-American descent?
I don't think ANY book should be rewritten. If it offends you or you don't like it, then put it down. Anybody else agree?

Wow, I had heard something about this- nothing in depth, though- and I thought it was a joke.
I completely agree with you, it's ridiculous. I can't believe someone would do that.
