Diane U (djuseless) That is how I was with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I got about half way through it and quit! I was reading it for my local book club. As for writing a review, if it is for Net Galley you can decline to review it and leave an explanation. If it is for someone else, I would leave an honest review explaining it.

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I've become quite ruthless with my books lately - there are just too many good books out there to waste time reading ones that you aren't enjoying! I generally give a book 50 - 100 pages (depending on the length) and if I really hate it or am just having that "Who cares?" feeling that you seem to be having, I give up.

What book are you reading? Just so we have some future warning in case we pick it up and have the same reaction!

Abbie (weatherlover1) | 240 comments I have one book I tried to read a few months back before I started reviewing. I got it as a freebie and thought it sounded good. Ugh I tried I really did. I read the last few pages and even that was boring so I said enough it enough I am not sure I think I was almost half way in. I have not run into a review book yet I have not liked but I will just be honest like you where and pick out things I did like but say why I could not finish it. I did have one review book that had 3 stories and I only read two because the 3rd one was just no interesting to me.

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments I struggled reading Dark Harvest, but went ahead and finished it because I wanted to know who was hurting the Amish folks.

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Sometimes I'm like that, Kristy - even if I'm not particularly enjoying a book I want to finish it to find out who it ends!

Patsy | 19 comments I have tried to read a couple of books that I just couldn't get into also. I finally just put them down. Didn't want to waste anymore time on the book. I have a big pile of to be read books that I need to swindle on down. I have also won a couple of books that ended up in the garbage. The book looked and sounded great, but as I started reading, curse words were being used. I hate it when authors do that! I threw them away because I didn't want to share this kind of writing with anyone.

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments I don't like books with curse words either. I won't read them. Exception was Dark Harvest because every time damm came up I read it as darn and that was the only word in there. The way it was used was not all that bad.

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) I can generally overlook a few swear words in books if they don't pop up too often, but I can get really frustrated when they feature on every other page! I struggle to read crime/thriller novels now because it seems like authors of this genre feel the need to make all their characters speak this way.

While I'm happy to ignore the occasional swear words or short sex scenes in most secular books, I am glad that I discovered Christian fiction. It's just a pity it's really hard to find in the UK. Amazingly, my home county libraries (not where I go to university, but it's a start) have started stocking some Christian fiction, so let's hope they continue to do this!

My motto on giving up on books is "Life's too short to waste on bad books". If I'm really not enjoying a book, it's generally best to move on to something I will like, unless it's for class or a close friend has raved about it. I generally use the "50 page test", where if I'm still not enjoying it by page 50, I stop.

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments What if it is on a kindle where it doesn't show pages? Although my mom told me we can download something on our kindle to show the pages, but I don't know where or how to do that.

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) It's difficult with Kindle. Maybe pick a percentage? I'd probably go for 10%.

I got an email from Amazon yesterday saying that they're introducing page-numbers on most books. As long as you're connected to the internet, it should download automatically sometime over the next few days.

message 11: by Kristy (new)

Kristy (riverunbroken) | 250 comments Really? That is interesting that it will do it automatically.

message 12: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brand (pixieauthoress) Yep, this is what it said in the email I got from Amazon.co.uk:

"We have a new, free software update for your Kindle that will be delivered via a Wi-Fi connection over the next few days. To receive the update, please turn your wireless on and connect to an available Wi-Fi network (learn how to set up Wi-Fi on your Kindle). The software update will automatically download in the background and install when your Kindle goes into sleep mode. The update should take less than 10 minutes to complete. If a Wi-Fi connection is not available or you would prefer to transfer the update via USB, please view these instructions."
